Logarithmic variance profiles and the corresponding f-1 spectra of temperature fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
We report experimental results for the temperature variance 2(z) and the corresponding frequency spectra P(f) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection (RBC) in a cylindrical sample of aspect ratioT= D/L = 1:00 (D = 1:12 m is the diameter and L = 1:12 m the height). The measurements were conducted in the Rayleigh-number range 1011 < Ra < 1:35 1014 and Pr ' 0:8. For Ra = 1:35x1014, 2(z) could be described well by a logarithmic dependence on the vertical position z in a range of z 1 < z < z 2 with z 1 ' 70 and z 2 = 0:1L. Here L=(2Nu) is the thickness of a thin thermal sublayer adjacent to the horizontal plate where the heat flux (denoted by the Nusselt number Nu) is carried mostly by thermal diffusion. In the log layer, we found that the temperature spectra had a significant frequency range over which P(f) f with close to 1. As Ra decreased, increased so that the log layer became thinner. At Ra = 2:05 1011, z 2 < z 1 and therefore there was no range for a log layer. Correspondingly, the temperature spectrum near the horizontal plate did not have the f1 scaling form either
Evidence for the decay B0→J/ψω and measurement of the relative branching fractions of meson decays to J/ψη and J/ψη′
First evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)

Polyolefin chain shuttling at ansa-metallocene catalysts: legend and reality
Several papers have claimed the amenability for binary metallocene systems to undergo coordinative chain transfer polymerization (CCTP) to produce stereoblock isotactic/syndiotactic polypropylene materials. In this work, we explored through high throughput experimentation (HTE) tools and methods the propensity of the isotactic-selective rac-Me2Si(2-Me-4-Ph-1-Ind)2ZrCl2 (2) catalyst to mediate propene CCTP, individually or in tandem with the syndiotactic-selective ansa-zirconocene Ph2C(Cp)(2,7-di-tBu-9-Flu)ZrCl2 (3), using ZnEt2 and methylalumoxane (MAO) as chain shuttling agents. The results demonstrated that 2 is not prone to propene CCTP, and therefore does not yield stereoblock PP materials when used in racemic form or in tandem with other metallocenes. An unambiguous method to demonstrate the occurrence of CCTP in isotactic propene polymerization, based on the microstructural characterization of the sample by 13CNMR spectroscopy, is also proposed
MgCl2-Supported Ziegler-Natta Catalysts for Propene Polymerization: Before Activation
Modern “high-yield” Ziegler-Natta (HY-ZN) catalysts for the isotactic polymerization of propene consist of MgCl2/TiCl4/electron donor/AlEt3 formulations which are much more complex and far less understood than the early TiCl3-based versions. Many important aspects, such as the structure and formation of the active sites and the details of their modification by means of organic electron donors, are largely unknown, and the resulting hybrid (organic-inorganic) catalysts therefore can be regarded as black boxes. For a long time, the similarity between the layered crystal lattices of “violet” TiCl3 and MgCl2 and the concept of epitaxial TiCl4 chemisorption on the latter have been set at the foundation of the mechanistic hypothesis on the inner functioning of HY-ZN systems. Here we provide experimental and computational evidence that metastable nonepitaxial MgCl2/TiCl4 adducts with dynamic character are involved in the activation of the precatalyst with AlEt3 and its deactivation with alkoxysilanes (competent surface modifiers in the catalytic state). These findings can have important consequences in the modeling of catalytic Ti species
What evidence on evidence-based management in healthcare?
Purpose: This manuscript discusses the main findings gathered through a systematic literature review aimed at crystallizing the state of art about evidence-based management (EBMgt) in healthcare. The purpose of this paper is to narrow the main gaps in current understanding about the linkage between sources of evidence, categories of analysis and kinds of managerial decisions/management practices that different groups of decision-makers put in place. In fact, although EBMgt in healthcare has emerging as a fashionable research topic, little is still known about its actual implementation. Design/methodology/approach: Using the Scopus database as main source of evidence, the authors carried out a systematic literature review on EBMgt in healthcare. Inclusion and exclusion criteria have been crystallized and applied. Only empirical journal articles and past reviews have been included to consider only well-mature and robust studies. A theoretical framework based on a “process” perspective has been designed on these building blocks: inputs (sources of evidence), processes/tools (analyses on the sources of evidence), outcomes (the kind of the decision) and target users (decision-makers). Findings: Applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, 30 past studies were selected. Of them, ten studies were past literature reviews conducted between 2009 and 2014. Their main focus was discussing the previous definitions for EBMgt in healthcare, the main sources of evidence and their acceptance in hospitals. The remaining studies (n=20, 67 percent) were empirical; among them, the largest part (n=14, 70 percent) was informed by quantitative methodologies. The sources of evidence for EBMgt are: published studies, real world evidence and experts’ opinions. Evidence is analyzed through: literature reviews, data analysis of empirical studies, workshops with experts. Main kinds of decisions are: performance assessment of organization units, staff performance assessment, change management, organizational knowledge transfer and strategic planning. Originality/value: This study offers original insights on EBMgt in healthcare by adding to what we know from previous studies a “process” perspective that connects sources of evidence, types of analysis, kinds of decisions and groups of decision-makers. The main findings are useful for academia as they consolidate what we know about EBMgt in healthcare and pave avenues for further research to consolidate this emerging discipline. They are also useful for practitioners, as hospital managers, who might be interested to design and implement EBMgt initiatives to improve hospital performance
Quando Spinoza «uscì dalla sua tomba». Tre scritti di F. D. E. Schleiermacher
The essay deals with the Spinoza-Studien (17893-4) redacted by F. D. E. Schleiermacher as a comment on Jacobi’s Ueber die Lehre des Spinoza in Briefen an den Herrn Moses Mendelssohn (1785). The Author considers those manuscripts important for both Schleiermacher’s intellectual development and the German romantic debate on atheism and religion. If the idealist thinkers try to theorize, from Spinoza’s metaphysics, a science of the absolute, and Jacobi elaborates a doctrine of “salto mortale” beyond science, Schleiermacher believes that Spinoza’s philosophy can help to develop the transcendental perspective. Instead of Jacobi’s “salto mortale”, he proposed the conception of the Inerenz of finite to infinite, and instead of the idealistic science of the absolute, he emphasises the immediate feeling of being. The deterministic ethic theorized in the “Rapsodien” (1789-93) can be in this way accorded “tangentially” to a mystic doctrine of the infinite
Fast Analytics of High-Impact Polypropylene (HIPP)
High-impact polypropylenes (HIPPs) are complex blends, featuring a crystalline isotactic polypropylene matrix and a dispersed phase consisting of an amorphous ethylene/propylene copolymer (EPR). The relative amount of EPR and its composition heavily affect the application properties of the material and need to be accurately controlled. Standard analytical methods are time- and labor-intensive and require considerable amounts of sample and of a toxic solvent, xylene. Here, we introduce an analytical approach to HIPP characterization based on crystallization elution fractionation. The approach is fast, can be operated on just a few mg of sample, and does not require sophisticated and expensive techniques
