This article aims to analyze the presence of historical elements in the constitution of the novel O ciclo das águas, by Moacyr Scliar. This fictional work from 1975 presents the “white slave trade,” a historical fact that occurred between the late 19th century and World War II, in which Jewish women were enticed and prostituted by an international criminal organization, Zwi Migdal. Scliar\u27s text demonstrates how Literature and History have similar supports, especially in the use of narrative as a writing instrument. In addition, Moacyr Scliar takes an approach to his text combining both real and imaginary aspects: he reports, through the novel, the entire trajectory lived by hundreds of Jewish immigrants heading to America, where they eventually found prostitution. Thus, Literature and History are combined in the narrative process.
Esther and Polaquinha: transgression and prostitution in the narratives of Moacyr Scliar and Dalton Trevisan
Female sexuality, over the centuries, has been subject to patriarchal controls and restrictions.
In fact, although there is supposedly a freedom in the approach to that theme in
contemporaneity, taboos and prohibitions still persist in different contexts, mainly religious
ones. Despite the prescriptions that determine decorum and submission for women, who must
behave as "respectable", there is that one who, at least technically, has the possibility of
transgressing the sexual norms of behavior: the prostitute. Considered as a corrupt woman, who
must redeem herself from her actions, the figure of the prostitute is present in literary
representations of romantic conceptions. In a different perspective, the characters Esther, from
O ciclo das águas, by the author Moacyr Scliar, and Polaquinha, from the work A Polaquinha,
by Dalton Trevisan, are presented. These protagonists, belonging to different historical and
sociocultural contexts, have points in common, as they were forced into prostitution due to the
stereotype of polacas attributed to them (white women, usually blonde, who were sex slaves of
international prostitution networks), in addition to challenging their gender roles in pursuit of
sexual pleasure. Thus, this thesis aims to analyze the figure of the prostitute from the characters
Esther and Polaquinha, observing the aspects of both narratives that relate to commercialized
female sexuality and, concomitantly, to the erotic experiences that trigger the empowerment
and decay of protagonists. They had their pinnacle and ruin in prostitution, but, before their
decline, they resisted the impositions and transgressed the regulations determined to them in
the patriarchal society from which they came. Thus, the study of these works cited presents the
possibility of elucidating a theme permeated by stereotypes and stigmas; moreover, knowing
the trajectory of these prostitute characters is also having access to representations of the
feminine from the perspective of Western culture and the Judeo-Christian tradition, which still
have, significantly, a misogynist view.
Considerada
Essas protagonistas, pertencentes a
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
This article aims to analyze the mermaid myth in the narratives “A perigosa Yara”, by Clarice Lispector, and
O ciclo das águas, by Moacyr Scliar, observing allegorical and representative aspects of the feminine, based on the characteristics disseminated by Jewish and Christian conceptions. Having stunning beauty and wonderful singing, the image of the mermaid is traditionally associated with seduction and charm, elements that are seen as dangerous from a patriarchal perspective, as they deceive men, leading to their ruin.
However, the mermaids in “A perigosa Yara” and O ciclo das águas can be seen as manifestation of empowerment, as they are neither romanticized nor subjugate themselves to the men with whom they relate. This point to a relevant update of the myth, according to a new perspective that understands the feminine as autonomous and multiple in identities.
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
War and prostitution in O Ciclo das Águas, by Moacyr Scliar
The book O ciclo das águas, by Moacyr Scliar, first published in 1975, was inspired by the issue of trafficking in Jewish women brought to America, between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, where they were forced to be sex slaves in the Zwi Migdal, an international network of prostitution. These women became known as polacas, a term that became pejoratively associated with foreign white women and prostitutes. According to Moacyr Scliar (1985, p. 100): “O ciclo das águas has as its background the \u27white trade\u27 to Latin America, particularly to Argentina and Brazil, in the period from 1880 to 1930, approximately”. The narrative intertwines historical and fictional elements: from the protagonist Esther, there is an approach to the event of the trajectory experienced by hundreds of Jewish immigrants who went to America, where they believed they would find better living conditions and greater freedom, but who actually ended up entering prostitution to be sex slaves. As for the title of the narrative, O ciclo das águas, there is an allusion to the various changes suffered by the protagonist, in the symbolism of water itself, which in its calm and unruly, clean and dirty movements and cycles, can refer to moments of human life and, more specifically, to the story of these women who were prostituted
This article aims to analyze the short story "A report to an academy", by Franz Kafka, addressing aspects involving memory and oblivion in the narrative as a way of transmission of experiences, and also the establishment of own identity, from the perspective of the narrator Red Peter, an ape that became "human" after living traumatic situations. Through the simian\u27s report, there is a irony of Kafka that we are all animals that learn to be "human" only after adapt us to oppressive situations of society: the narrator simian presents itself as our "human self" credible.
