Peak Separation by Derivative Spectroscopy Applied to FTIR Analysis of Hydrolized Silica

Reliable spectral analysis is only achieved if the spectrum is thoroughly investigated in regard to all hidden and overlapped peaks. This paper describes the steps undertaken to find and separate such peaks in the range of 3000 to 4000 cm(-1) in the case of three different infrared absorption spectra of the glass surface of hydrolyzed silica optical fibers. Peak finding was done by the analysis of the second and fourth derivatives of the digital data, coupled with the available knowledge of infrared spectroscopy of silica-water interaction in the investigated range. Peak separation was accomplished by curve fitting with four different models. The model with the best fit was described by a sum of pure Gaussian peaks. Shoulder limit and detection limit maps were used to validate the revealed spectral features.Fundação CPqD, BR-13086902 Campinas, SP, BrazilUniv Estadual Paulista, Inst Quim, BR-14800900 Araraquara, SP, BrazilUniv Estadual Paulista, Inst Quim, BR-14800900 Araraquara, SP, Brazi

We proposed a novel digital optical sensor designed from a tapered depressed-cladding fiber. The dynamic range is estimated 20 dB as its linear response for stresses up to 8 % of the elastic limit of the material.Centro de Tecnologia da Informação Renato Archer (CTI)São Paulo State University (UNESP) Campus of São João da Boa VistaResearch and Development Center in Telecommunications (CPqD)São Paulo State University (UNESP) Campus of São João da Boa Vist

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Enhancing the Performance of Optical Networks with Route Segmentation and Fiber Augmentation

    No full text
In this paper, we propose and evaluate a scheme to enhance the performance of optical networks using route segmentation (RS) limited to modulation format maximum range. We have performed this study with an incremental traffic model considering the densely-connected CORONET topology taking the C-band and C+L-bands, with and without the adoption of fiber augmentation (FA). The results show that this strategy can be an interesting way to improve the network performance regarding blocking and bit rates.Universidade Federal Do ABC UFABC, SPPUC-Campinas, SPFundação CPqD, SPUniversidade Estadual Paulista UNESP, SPUniversidade Estadual Paulista UNESP, S
