Gil Vicente e a teatralização das linguagens

    No full text
The author attempts to show that the polyglottic nature and the linguistic «gibberish» of Gil Vicente's theatre does not intend to imitate the authenticity of its characters but to «carnivalise» the text, thereby making it a kind of manipean satire, which was in vogue at the time. The author intends to demonstrate that the theatre of Gil Vicente is not a «theatre of signifiers» (i.e. Gil Vicente's writing is not imitative in the aristotelic sense, but figurative)

Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing

    No full text
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente, Florianópolis, 2010Through a dialogical relation between poems and song lyrics, and the socio-political contexts which surrounded these texts, this research discusses the resonance that North American poet, Allen Ginsberg, had over the Brazilian musical movement, the Tropicália. The corpora are the poems "Howl" (1956), "America" (1956), "Supermarket in California" (1955), "Sunflower Sutra" (1955), "Song" (1954), and "Wild Orphan" (1952), written by Allen Ginsberg, and the songs "Batmacumba" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, and Gilberto Gil, "Baby" (1968), composed by Caetano Veloso, "Geléia Geral" (1968), composed by Gilberto Gil and Torquato Neto, "Alegria, Alegria" (1967), composed by Caetano Veloso, and "Domingo no Parque" (1967), composed by Gilberto Gil. The main theoretical and critical parameters of this research include: Mikhail Bakhtin and his reflections on intertextuality; James J. Farrell, who believes that the American counterculture began with the Beats; Claudio Willer, who stresses the importance of Allen Ginsberg to the Beat movement, as well as to the birth of the American counterculture; Christopher Dunn, who emphasizes the historical, social, and political relevance of the Tropicália; and Celso Favaretto, who discusses in depth the complexity of most of the Tropicália songs. Based on such parameters, this research suggests that the life and work of Allen Ginsberg had great resonance over the creation of the Tropicália.

Who is the author of my poems?: Art practice based PhD exploring knowledge gained in the process of creativity

It is a prevailingassumptionthat poetryis closelylinkedto the times in which it is created, and that the poet isinfluencedby his surroundings. For example, the EnglishRomanticpoetryis seen as a direct result of the French andAmericanrevolutions.(Ackroyd, 2006).However, this assumptiondoes not explainthe observationthat poetryis beingwrittenin ancienttimes as well as in moderntimes;in times of great wars as well as times of tranquillity;in crowdedcitiesor in remoteunpopulatedcountryside.Since poets have been writingwithinvariedhistoricaltimes, societiesand evencontradictorysituations,it could be argued that these factorsinfluenceand shape the contentof the poem, but do not bringabout the impetuousto create, as Ellrodt (2000:v) notes. Creativity, I wouldargue, is not ‘sparked’by any of the abovefactors, but ratherby a different mode of activitycomingfrom a mysterioussource of knowledgethat arguablycannotbeseen or measured, thus requires an exploration. In this paper I wouldlike to approach the source of creativityusing a re-flectiveaccount,in the hope to contributesome insightsregarding the work of an artist withinacademiccontext.I will focusonmyartisticoutputasavisionarypoet, exemplifiedthroughpoetryinvideoartsthatarecreatedaspartofmyPhDresearch. The paper will approach there elementin the poeticcreative process:Word, Writing, and Poet

Lowth's legacy in teaching English to foreigners: The case of Thomas Connelly's English grammar in Spain

    No full text
This article sheds light on the influence exerted by Robert Lowth's (1710-1787) English grammar (1762) overseas in the teaching of English as a foreign language, and more particularly, on the work of the Irish friar Thomas Connelly (1728-1800), author of the most popular English grammar for Spaniards published in Spain in 1784. After setting the context for both the life and work of this author, it examines the similarities in content and wording between Connelly and Lowth's English grammars through a comparison of selected passages occurring in both works. This analysis will help us determine to what extent Connelly relied on Lowth and how faithful he was to his source42270,1Q4AHCISSC

The Portuguese playwright Gil Vicente wrote his plays between 1502 and 1536, possible year of his death. During his life, he served the king without having his liberty as an artist compromised by any formality. However, from 1536 on, Tribunal do Santo Ofício, whose function, among others, was censoring books, is established in Portugal. This paper aims to discuss the transmission of Gil Vicente’s works, through a discourse-semantic analysis of the prologue to the first edition of Compilação de todas as obras de Gil Vicente, written by the author himself. For this purpose, the analysis will draw upon the Appraisal system, developed by Martin & White (2005), and also upon the text’s rhetorical structure, to highlight the composition of the author’s ethos and to understand why the aforementioned text was censored by the Inquisition in its second edition

This is a descriptive-exploratory study, conducted with seven graduates of the Technical Course in Community Health (CTSC) of the Landless Workers Movement (MST). Its main objective was to analyze interactions between health education - ethical issues - political issues in the daily lives of the community health technicians of MST. The research blended qualitative research with the Thematic Research proposed by Paulo Freire. With the exploration, inference and interpretation of the research material were found five categories, four of which emerged in the time of collecting specific data and one that came out in the setting of research itself, they were: (1) the amenity of the health sector; (2) the output of the militants and health sector stagnation; (3) in the course we learned how to deal and to value with the human being as a whole; (4) health education should be linked to a society project; (5) when you need the health sector works. In the interpreting process of the material these categories were grouped into three broad thematic groups: counter-hegemony of the health sector within the movement, work in health and health education. With this organization was realized transversality in the category: In the course we learned how to deal and to value with the human being as a whole. It has been demonstrated as characteristic of the formation process of the MST a contraposition to a fragmented training courses still prevailing in the health area, which contributed to the understanding one of the main challenges in training professionals to work in SUS: to promote educational processes articulated with larger struggles of social movements, contributing to an unfragmented formation in which people are understood as historical, social and collective beings
