Women on boards and the cost of debt: The role of family ties
We examine the female director-cost of debt relationship in a continental European environment where –as in most countries– the conflict of interest between dominant owners and minority shareholders is prevalent. Using a sample of non-financial Spanish listed companies for 2007–2023, our results show that female directors have an impact on a higher cost of debt until they reach a critical mass, after which their effect on the price of financing is negative. Moreover, the presence of family ties among female directors influences their effect on the cost of debt, such that while a small number of family female directors reduces conflicts with creditors, the presence of a critical mass of female directors with family ties increases the cost of financing. Our findings indicate that dominant owners may appoint female directors for different purposes, thereby affecting the level of conflict with creditors.171,2946,5Q1Q1SSCI9,
The evolution of fertility in the Canary Islands in contrast with that of Spain in the 21st century (2000-2023)
El SFI of the Canary Islands reports a greater decrease than that of Spain in the first 8 triennia of
the 21st century (32,3% vs 5,7%), associated with a greater decrease in the fertility of women under
35 years of age and a smaller increase in the fertility of women over 35 years of age. The age at first
motherhood has been delayed by 2.43 years in Spain and 3.16 years in the Canary Islands. The relative
weight of births to foreign mothers increased by 164.3% in Spain and 125.8% in the Canary Islands,
although their SFI fell by 27.4% and 43.8%, respectively.89593
Regulated Power Supply with High Power Factor for Hyperspectral Imaging Applications
Illumination is a crucial factor in hyperspectral imaging systems. In this respect,
this work is focused on analyzing the influence of the light power source in acquiring
hyperspectral images. To this end, a custom regulated power supply was designed and
developed. This power supply was then integrated into a hyperspectral acquisition system, and several light stability measurements were conducted. Finally, several parameters
related to the stability of the light produced by those systems were extracted using image
analysis techniques, and a statistical comparison among the different power supplies was
performed. Two commercial power supplies were also analyzed under the same experimental conditions and compared with the proposed power supply. The hyperspectral
measurements were conducted using light transmission and reflectance. The results indicate that the proposed power supply performs better than or at least as well as commercial
power supplies in terms of light stability. Additionally, this study shows the impact of
power supply design on the stability and quality of hyperspectral illumination, especially
concerning the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) across different spectral bands. It is shown that
optimizing the design of the power supply could improve light stability in hyperspectral
imaging applications.0,277Q39,
Reading itinerary: (inter)didactic space to read, walk and talk the book
This article analyzes the role of literary routes in the context of reading animation strategies. Particularly, those aspects that make the literary route an ideal tool for improving literary competence are claimed. The relationship already established between reader and text is now joined by the experience with whom the work mediates on the route: an expert voice that encourages interaction in the recognized and vivified space of the story. The general objectives are to determine the role of literary routes in didactic strategies for animation and reading support. Additionally, it aims to explore the influence of literary routes on teaching support, publishers, and comprehensive assessment of the proposed reading. With a mixed methodology (data triangulation), the acceptance of the literary route in different educational communities is diagnosed along with the process developed by its active agents (managers and monitor) based on an in-depth interview. The conclusions reveal the strengths of the literary route in the heat of the new emotional ties that are strengthened in its layout along with its competence advancement.170137340,348Q1ESCIQ177,560,0Q19,6ERIH PLU
Perceptions on the Implementation of a School Nursing Pilot Programme in the Canary Islands
Background/Objectives: School nursing is a nursing practice focused on promoting child health within the school and community environment, integrating healthcare with the educational process. The aim was to explore the experiences of nurses and teachers regarding the implementation of a school nursing pilot programme in primary education in the Canary Islands (Spain). Methods: A phenomenological study was conducted during the 2023/2024 academic year. In-depth interviews were conducted between May and June 2024 until data saturation was achieved. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using descriptive and interpretative thematic analysis. Intentional and co-occurrence coding methods were employed, followed by triangulation using Atlas-Ti software (version 24). Ethical approval was obtained (code: 2023-216-1). Results: A total of 21 informants (7 nurses and 14 teachers) were interviewed. Nurses revealed eight subthemes grouped into two main themes: Role of School Nurses (workload, school nurses’ experiences, career opportunities, and the school nurse profile) and School Nursing Project (suggested improvements, identified weaknesses, time management, and improvement needs). Regarding teachers, six subthemes were identified, also grouped into two main themes: Role of School Nurses (approach to school nursing and the importance of the presence of school nurses) and School Nursing Project (expectations, improving children’s health, school health, and experiences from the pilot programme). Conclusions: The pilot programme has been well received, showing a positive impact on students’ health. While successfully integrating nurses into schools, improvements are needed in working conditions, resource allocation, and specialized training to enhance its effectiveness and sustainability. Strengthening inter-professional collaboration between healthcare and education sectors and involving teachers in planning health activities are essential. Expanding the coverage and ensuring a consistent presence of school nurses would further build trust, improve chronic health management, and promote healthy habits from an early age. This programme illustrates the potential of nurses to transform schools into spaces for comprehensive health promotion.140,6332,4Q2Q1ESCI9,
Environmental and geographical drivers of reef fish beta diversity across the depth gradient
The swift decline of coral reefs stands out as a significant biodiversity challenge confronting our generation, and mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs; reefs between 30 and 150 m) have been proposed as refuge habitats that may be less affected by climate change and human impacts compared to their shallow counterparts. However, MCEs are often distinct from shallow reefs, and studies assessing how marine biodiversity changes along the depth gradient and what factors can influence marine communities in MCEs are still scarce. Here, we conducted underwater visual censuses to evaluate how fish assemblages change among islands and environmental characteristics across the shallow to mesophotic depth gradient within the Cabo Verde Archipelago. Our results show that the beta diversity of reef fish assemblages was mainly driven by depth and environmental factors such as temperature and benthic variables. A consistent trend of increasing beta diversity from the shallow to the lower mesophotic zone was observed among the islands, with the lowest variation in species composition observed between the shallow (5-30 m) and upper (31-60 m) mesophotic depths. Lower species richness and higher turnover was observed within lower MCEs (61-85 m), suggesting saturation in fish richness at small scales, possibly a result of changes in microhabitat heterogeneity. Furthermore, the effect of geography was negligible, and local-scale environment characteristics were the main drivers of differences in species assemblages. Evidence suggests that increased fishing pressure on the most populated island may reduce the biogeographic influence on fish assemblages across the archipelago.3421140,8022,2Q1Q1SCIE11,
