    Effectiveness of mass trapping by bottle traps baited with salt sardines to control Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin)

    Various substances are known as attractants of tephritid flies; the putrescine and other compounds coming from animal decay have been positively tested for attraction of Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) and other tephritids. In Sicilian coastal areas, usually heavily infested by Bactrocera oleae (Gmelin), few organic farmers producing high quality olive oil apply mass trapping by using bottle traps baited with salt sardines. The aim of this paper is to test the effectiveness of this kind of mass trapping to control the olive fruit fly. In 2005 and 2006 mass trapping was tested in an organic olive grove (Cerasuola cultivar) located in Trapani. In 2005 two plots were delineated: 189 untreated plants and 190 plants bearing bottle traps. In this year compared theses were three: untreated trees, central and marginal trees bearing bottle traps. In 2006 another plot and the relating thesis were added: 131 trees twice treated with copper hydroxide. The attractive device consists of a transparent 2-l polythene bottle with 2 holes (diameter 2 cm) in the upper third; it is filled two thirds full with water and one salt sardine. Previous to put the sardine in the bottle the salt is rinsed off it. When the solution dries and its level is below one third of the bottle, water is added to reach the initial level. At the beginning of August (5th in 2005, 2nd in 2006) baited bottles were positioned: one every tree along the margin and one every two trees in the rest. The infestation due to B. oleae was monitored by sampling 100 olives from ten trees per each thesis (ten fruits per sampled tree). Samplings were performed every two weeks until total infestation reached 5% and, subsequently, they were weekly. In both years olive oil has been extracted from olives exclusively collected from the ten sampled trees of each plot, to relate oil quality to infestation and treatments. To monitor olive fruit fly captures done by mass trapping, the content of 10 bottles along the margin and 10 bottles in the central part of mass trapping area was sieved at two (2005) or six (2006) samplings. In 2005 total infestation levels due to B. oleae of the three theses recorded statistically significant differences in the whole period, reaching at harvest 39% of infested drupes in the central trees bearing bottle traps with sardines, 64% in the marginal trees with bottle traps and 80% in the untreated trees; on the other hand, in the same period, the harmful infestation (3rd instar larvae, pupae and exit holes) between the marginal and untreated trees did not statistically differ; the oil quality was excellent in all theses and it resulted more related to the harmful infestation rather than the total one. In 2006 both total and harmful infestation levels of the four theses recorded three statistically homogeneous groups: once again the best result was achieved by the central trees bearing bottle traps (total infestation at harvest 23%), the second group consists of marginal trees with bottle traps and those treated with copper hydroxide (36% and 53% of total infestation at harvest, respectively); the worst result was achieved by untreated trees (68% of tot. infestation at harvest). In this year the oil quality was good in all theses, with few differences. Arthropods caught in the bottle traps were almost exclusively Diptera Brachycera (98% in 2005, 95% in 2006). B. oleae adults represented 42% of caught arthropods in 2005 and 71% in 2006. In both years B. oleae captures by bottle traps showed no significantly statistical differences between central and marginal trees, or between B. oleae males and females. Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) was also caught in bottle traps (6% of total in 2005, 14% in 2006)

    The susceptibility of olive cultivars to the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi) (Diptera: Tephritidae), has seldom been studied. This article examines factors associated with olive fruit fly infestation of 16 commonly planted Sicilian olive cultivars. Total infestation data were simultaneously correlated with categorical and quantitative factors using ordinal logistic regression. When all factors were included in the analysis, year, sampling date, cultivar, and fruit color were highly significant, but the quantitative factors fruit volume, fruit elongation, and fruit hardness were not. When the analysis was repeated excluding cultivar, all quantitative factors were significant, and elongation and volume were highly significant. Spherical, large, and hard fruit seemed to be preferred by B. oleae over fruit that are elongate, small, and soft. Therefore, fruit color, elongation, volume, and hardness provide useful information regarding the susceptibility of cultivars. In both organic and conventional olive cultivation, information about olive cultivar susceptibility to olive fruit fly will help orchard managers to produce quality oil and table olives while reducing treatments for olive fruit fly control

    Effectiveness of spinosad and mineral oil based commercial products on oviposition and egg hatching of grapholita funebrana treitschke

    Laboratory trials were performed to evaluate the action of spinosad and mineral oil on eggs of Grapholita funebrana Treitschke, the key pest in plum orchards. Fruits of cultivars Angeleno, President and Stanley were used in the trials. The first set of tests was carried out by introducing two mated females of G. funebrana into a cage together with fruits of a single cultivar. The second set of trials tested the three cultivars simultaneously. In all trials, one third of the fruits of each cultivar was treated with mineral oil, another third with spinosad and the final third was left untreated. Treatments were carried out before introducing mated females into the cages. The number of fruits with eggs, the number of eggs laid on each fruit and the number of hatched eggs were recorded. The number of eggs per fruit recorded in all trials was the same, indicating that plum moth females, after choosing the fruits for oviposition on the basis of the cultivar or the applied product, tend to use all suitable fruits in the same way. Oviposition in terms of number of fruits was significantly lower in mineral oil and spinosad treatments in all trials, compared to the control. Differences between the two products were found in trials carried out with Angeleno alone and with the three cultivars together. The percentage of egg hatching on the fruits was always significantly lower with spinosad treatment compared to the mineral-oil treatment and the control. In the trials carried out using the three cultivars, the number of infested fruits was significantly higher for Angeleno and no differences in the hatching percentages were found among the cultivars. The ovicidal and antiovideponent activities of commercial products containing mineral oils or spinosad could represent an interesting tool to reduce G. funebrana damage, both in organic and conventional plum orchards

Programa de Pós-Graduação em LiteraturaA pretensão desta dissertação intitulada O duplo significado do sentir e do pensar nas obras de Alberto Caeiro e Descartes é investigar a relação entre o sentir e o puro pensar, usando como referência a poesia O Guardador de Rebanhos, de Alberto Caeiro, que apresenta de forma evidente o tema; e como este assunto é tratado nas Meditações Metafísicas de René Descartes, também de forma claramente visível. Podemos perceber em ambos os autores, uma diplopia, uma espécie de duplo olhar sobre a relação sentir e puro pensar. No primeiro capítulo vou falar sobre a tese do duplo olhar de Descartes, a respeito da relação sentir e puro pensar na leitura de Merleau-Ponty, salientando a visão de natureza. No segundo capítulo, parto da leitura das três primeiras Meditações Metafísicas para caracterizar a tensão que se pode verificar entre Descartes e Alberto Caeiro quando se referem ao puro pensar. O foco principal de Descartes, nas três primeiras Meditações, é o pensar puro, e neste ponto Alberto Caeiro critica o pensar puro. No terceiro capítulo, analisando as três últimas Meditações, percebe-se que há uma virada no pensamento de Descartes, no qual o autor inverte seu ponto de vista, aproximando-se da idéia de Alberto Caeiro. No quarto capítulo, mostrarei a leitura que outros autores fazem acerca do sentir e do pensar na obra de Alberto Caeiro, mostrando que assim como Descartes, este também ostenta uma diplopia, não do sentir, mas do pensar. The pretension of this work entitled O duplo significado do sentir e do pensar nas obras de Alberto Caeiro e Descartes is to investigate the relationship between the feeling and the pure thinking, using as reference the poetry O Guardador de Rebanhos, by Alberto Caeiro, that presents in an evident way this theme; and as this subject is treated in René Descartes' Metaphysical Meditations, also in a clearly visible way. It is possible to notice in both authors, the diplopy, a sort of double look about the relationship between feeling and pure thinking. The thesis about Descartes'double look regarding the relation of feeling and pure thinking, in Merleau-Ponty reading, pointing out the nature vision, will be treated in the first chapter. In the second chapter, I start from the reading of the first three Metaphysical Meditations to characterize the tension that can be verified between Descartes and Alberto Caeiro when they refer to the pure thinking. Descartes' main focus in the first three Meditations is pure thinking and, in this point, Alberto Caeiro criticizes pure thinking. In the third chapter, analyzing the last three Meditations, it is possible to notice that there is an alteration in Descartes' thought, in which the author inverts his point of view, approaching of Alberto Caeiro's idea. In the fourth chapter, I will show the reading that other authors do concerning feeling and thinking in Alberto Caeiro's work, showing that as well as Descartes, this also shows a diplopy, not of feeling, but of thinking
