This study aims to determine how women's sexuality in the Suster Keramas Movie represented. The author uses the theory of Baudrillard's Simulations of Jaen. Where in Jaen Simulation Baudrillard, humans inhabit a space of reality, where the difference between the real and fantasy, the original and the fake ones are very thin. Simularca is the space where reality, whether real or apparent, manipulate and simulate everything until the furthest limits. Simulacra restrictions do not have a reference, it is a duplication of a duplication, so that the difference between the original and the duplicate becomes blurred.

The research method used is the method of Jaen Baudrillard simulation analysis on the basis that this study analyzed the sexuality of women who delivered in a scene in the Suster Keramas movie, which gives an explanation and overview of related formulation of the problem.

Inferred outline sexuality analytical results indicate a space where all the principles of reality and truth of modernism is now challenged and even rejected. What is shown is just an exploitation of capitalism which aims to get the maximum profit.
</jats:p

The Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Christ (Abdi Kristus, AK) chose Saint Thrse of the Child Jesus as their second patron. The purpose of this choice was that the AK sisters follow her life in their life of prayer, communion as well as mission. To determine whether the sisters have been familiar with the simplicity of life and spirituality of Saint Thrse, the author conducted this extensive research. The results lead to the conclusion that the introduction of the spirituality of Saint Thrse of the Child Jesus still needs to be intensified with a study on her life, especially the life of prayer which is reflected in her autobiography and personal letters, particularly within the framework of the initial formation of the AK sisters

Ethnic identity, political identity and ethnic conflict: simulating the effect of congruence between the two identities on ethnic violence and conflict

    No full text
This thesis outlines and presents an alternative hypothetical process to the emergence of ethnic conflict. Ethnic conflicts, rather than being dependent upon pre-existing 'ancient hatreds', are instead the result of a congruence between ethnic and political identity which grants individuals the ability to use ethnicity to identify and eliminate political threats. This hypothesis is formed by the examination of three case studies of ethnic conflict: Lebanon, Northern Ireland and Croatia. This hypothesis is then formalised and tested using an agent based simulation in which agent interactions are dependent upon ethnic and political identity and the congruence between the two. As predicted there was a strong positive correlation between how accurately ethnic identity reflected political identity and the level of ethnically motivated violence in the simulation, although the relationship was not linear. Furthermore the effect of a shift in congruence was found to be roughly comparable to the effect of initialising agents with a moderate level of pre-existing ethnic antagonism

"That I may sing my message into the hearts of the people" : music performers in Hennie Aucamp's short stories

    No full text
The Afrikaans author Hennie Aucamp employs performing music artists prominently as a topic in ten of his short stories. Some artists portrayed had been capable of performing music long ago. These characters are usually depicted as older, pathetic people. Among them are Miss Lizzie in "Die les" and Alfons in "Die benefiet-voorstelling". Others are artists who accept the challenge of performance in spite of their circumstances, and who touch the hearts of those around them with their ecstatic portrayals. Among them count Tant Hester in "Die Caledonner", Suster Gloria in "When the saints go marching in" and the elderly singer in "Met alles mag jy kwistig wees". Thirdly, there are those performing artists who practise their art after an interruption of many years, like Lady in "Wolf, wolf hoe laat is dit?" and Ouma in "Hoe ry die Boere sit-sit so". For both it is a liberating experience. The child prodigy in Aucamp's latest short story, "Die Wunderkind en Madame Clara: 'n Fantasiestück", does not belong to any of the three groups. She is young and impetuous, and goes to play for the famous and ageing pianist Clara Schumann, who is no longer capable of playing well. Reference is also made to short stories by Isak Dinesen and Thomas Mann

The diary of Anne Frank” can be considered an historical document as, besides giving us facts on World War II and the consequences of Nazi persecution to Jews, it also shows in a wide way the adolescence problems faced by the author in an environment of closure, of constant fear of death and of limitation of human contact for almost two years inside a Secret Annex. The main purpose of this essay is to try to analyze Anne’s Adolescence between the ages of 13 and 15 based on what has been written in her Diary identified with what is referred on several theories about this period of human development. It is characterized by biological, emotional, cognitive and social changes. Several authors consider this transition period as the second process of separation-individuation characterized by manifestations of autonomy, family crisis, need of the external world and peers, situations of aggressiveness and conflict, construction of identity and the awakening of sexuality. It is tried to understand the repairing function that the “Diary” represented to Anne Frank in that survival period. When writing her thoughts and feelings, Anne was able to get closer and sustain her internal world and also create her own space in the Annex

Gogo the sangoma : an initiation into biography writing

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2010.ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation is a study in the field of life writing. It is a biography. It also tracks the relationship between Gogo, an elderly Christian Xhosa sangoma (sacred specialist / ‘traditional healer’), and her would-be biographer. Both are women, both are South African, but like many South Africans, their race, religion, age, level of education, and class has separated them. This thesis tells of how the project of the one to tell the story of the other brought the two women together, but also highlighted their differences. As a black person, Gogo was disadvantaged during apartheid South Africa, working in domestic labour, one of the few careers available to her. As a woman in the milieu of African Traditional Religion, she was downtrodden by the patriarchal society in general - and her father and husband in particular. This situation was overlaid by the repression of both the Christian missionaries who, upon settling the land, dominated its peoples and their faith; and further, the Afrikaner Nationalist government’s theological justification of apartheid laws. It is through religion that Gogo was oppressed, but it is also through religion that she gained her power. It was one of her employers, whom Gogo describes ‘like a sister’, who encouraged Gogo to follow her calling into traditional healing, which she had avoided most of her life. Gogo returned to the tradition that oppressed her, but this time as mouthpiece of the Ancestors. The thesis draws on the ‘Tribal Politics’ theories of postmodern sociologist, Zygmunt Bauman. He proposes that within today's ‘imagined tribal communities’, we appeal to ‘experts’ to approve our ‘self-constitution’ – we construct our own identities from available models of identity. She has become an expert within her own community. Her ‘sacredness’ lends her status in an environment where New Age spirituality is a growing ‘imagined tribal community’ from within which indigenous cultures are being respected and resanctified by the descendants of colonialists, Christian Missionaries, and apartheid supporters. To tell her story, the author conducted over twenty interviews with Gogo, over two years. She travelled to Gogo’s hometown of Zastron in the Free State Province. This dissertation is Gogo’s biography. It tells of her hometown, her family of origin, her working life, her relationships and her children. As a psychology student, the author was interested in an indigenous tradition of physical, social, spiritual, and psychological healing. From a feminist psychological standpoint, she felt Gogo’s story of overcoming oppression should be given a voice. The author discusses theories of life writing, most specifically Paul J. Eakin’s theory of relational biography. He states that one’s life story is simultaneously the story of all the people in one’s life. This is not dissimilar to the South African notion of umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu (we are people because of other people). Beyond this, though, as proposed in feminist psychology, and the theory of observer effect - the life story is also affected by the person listening to and recording it. Despite the literature, the author learned that the process of recording a life is more difficult than she anticipated. She dealt with other players in her subject’s life. She had to discern fact from fantasy. She had to trust and be trusted. This dissertation tells of the relationship between the author and Gogo, the biographer and her subject. This is a discussion of attempting to build and maintain a relationship of equality. More than Gogo’s narrative, it is the author’s initiation into the process of life writing, with its assumptions, intentions, problems, theories, interpretations, setbacks and ultimate conclusion.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie voorlegging is 'n studie in die gebied van lewensbeskrywing. As 'n swart persoon was Gogo benadeel gedurende die Suid-Afrikaanse apartheid. Hierdie tesis is Gogo se biografie. Master
