Parenting styles and psychopatology: the importance of grandparents

    No full text
Background: Controversy exists regarding the role played by parent-children relationships for children’s behavioral and psychosocial development. Crucial for some authors, others consider parenting styles as part of a more complex system. Less adaptive parenting styles are generally associated with childrenwhohave lower involvement at school and may contribute for psychopathology emergence. Objectives: To investigate the contribution of parenting styles for the explanation of child psychopathology. Hypothesis: Parenting styles (H1) and parents’ childhood memories regarding parenting styles (H2) do contribute significantly for the explanation of statistical variance of children’s psychopathology. Method: Participants: 110 children (67 boys, 43 girls) aged 7-11 years (M = 9.22, SD = 1.14) from schools in Portugal as well as 83 fathers and 86 mothers; Instruments: For parenting styles, the Portuguese version of EMBU memories of upbringing (for parents regarding their own parents), EMBU-P (for parents) and EMBU-C (for children) were used. To assess children’s psychopathology the Portuguese version of CBCL was used. Results: According to linear regressions, individual and family factors do contribute significantly for the explanation of all CBCL’s indexes. EMBU-C regarding mothers’ parenting styles only explains the Hyperactivity/Attention index. EMBU-P explains most of CBCL’s indexes. Mothers’ and Fathers’ EMBU Memories of Upbringing explains the overall CBCL’s indexes. Conclusions: The explanation of children’s psychopathology by parenting styles is not restricted to parents’ representations regarding their own parenting styles nor to children’s perceptions regarding parenting styles but extends to memories of parents regarding parenting styles used by theirownparents. The ability of EMBUMemoriesof Upbringing to explain children’s psychopathology seems to exceed the EMBU-P’s and EMBU-C’s capacity.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This article first discusses the modes of the social construction of memory in certain favellas (shanty towns) of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. It argues that forms of denial of social history constitute a defensive process by which the pain of social origin is silenced or chased away. This article also discusses the kinds of projects a social group can have by examining the types of imaginary which animate them. Secondly, this article studies one particular favella in Rio de Janeiro. On the basis of an action-research project conducted with the collaboration of its inhabitants, the author explains the project and the stages of the group's intellectual and affective construction. Such a rediscovery of collective history is essential to a community's development.

CRIL. Under the light of the sun also the sounds shine: Photography, a mode of inhabiting the world

This project has its origin in an article for the first number of the magazine Passagens and itwas redone1 for my Master Thesis, presented at the Faculty of Architecture of Palermo in 2013.One intends here to question photography as a way to inhabit the world, where the watching ofphotography is a keeping and a taking care of. Photography here is understood as a vehicle of theimages of the world and in a certain sense as a construction of a real, as other representations cando it, but with the peculiarity of being, among other signs, content in the semiotic theory of Peirce. This content, as among others refer Roland Barthes2 and Rosalind Krauss3, is demonstration ofthe veracity of the photographic images whose origin was in a “reality”. The connection betweenthe chosen reality and my watching coincides on the photographic surface, that is: the referencetransfers to the watching of the author or the spectator. To inhabit is like a question which thatreference puts in a condition of otherness, welcomes, attempting at an answer. The spaces, the objects of these photographs, are found along the CRIL (the internal ring roadof Lisbon), which, together with the river Tagus, form a circle around the city. This is an urbanpath that connects in a little time the architectures and the urbanisations I photographed, through roundabouts, exits exclusively for all kinds of motor vehicles: private, public and heavytransports. The automobile is in fact the only way to be, temporarily and in a relative movement,in that urban space. To watch this route inside the compartment is like being seated in anarmchair watching a road movie, of which we can decide even the speed of the frames, thebeginning and the end of the sequences, as well as the soundtrack. But never stop or leave the“sequence plan” other than by the exits especially designed for that effect

Leveraging a marketing approach to improve awareness of a not-for-profit organization : portuguese Association of Physical Therapists case

    No full text
With this dissertation the author tries to leverage marketing strategies in order to create a communication plan suitable for not-for-profit organizations. Particularly, the Portuguese Association of Physical Therapists (PAPT) case was studied. Nowadays, it is crucial to understand what members expect from the Association with whom they have a relation. In the past years, the concerns of several Associations regarding the raise of new members have been increasing. Nonetheless, several factors have contributed to the declining of their revenues. The financial situation has been unfavourable for members to pay the fees their Association demands. However, frequently, associates do not realize the work their Associations develop and they infer that the payment of fees is not reflected in the gains supposedly expectable. Thus, it seems crucial to understand how to communicate with members and how to convey the correct message. With these concerns in mind, this dissertation was carried out in order to change this paradigm. To understand the needs, characteristics and motivations of members of PAPT it was created a survey from which intended to withdraw valid and relevant information. With this data, along with other information taken from the PAPT documents, it was possible to elaborate a specific communication plan for the PAPT. It is also important to state that although this study is focused in the PAPT, it is easily adaptable to other associations that share the same values.

Several authors believe in a relationship between parental styles and psychopathology (Amato, 1994; Perris, 1994), namely in children with reading disabilities (Al-Aygon, 2007) as well as in the importance of home environment upon literacy (Harmer & Alexander, 1978). Aim: To analyze the role of parenting styles in reading disabilities and in the incidence of psychopathology. Hypotheses: Parenting styles play an important role in children’s reading disabilities; childhood memories about parenting styles play an important role in reading/writing disabilities; parental styles and childhood memories about parenting styles play an important role in the incidence of psychopathology among children; the incidence of child psychopathology among reading disable children can be explained by the connection between parenting styles and reading disabilities. Method: 110 children (67M, 43F), aged between 7-11 years (M = 9.22, SD = 1.14) completed CPM (Raven, Raven & Court, 1947; Simões, 1995), EMBU-C (Castro, Toro, Arrindell & Van der Ende, 1993; Canavarro & Pereira, 2007a) and PROLEC-R (Cuetos, Rodriguez & Arribas, 2009; Figueira & Lopes, in press); 86 parents completed a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, EMBU-MI (Perris et al., 1980; Canavarro, 1999), EMBU-P (Castro et al., 1993; Canavarro & Pereira, 2007b) and CBCL (Achenbach, 1991; Fonseca et al., 1994). Results: Parenting styles do explain statistical variance of higher reading processes. Parenting styles and parents’ childhood memories concerning parenting styles revealed capacity to explain children’s psychopathology. The model composed by individual factors, family factors, parenting styles and reading disabilities showed an explanatory power about psychopathology. Conclusions: Parenting styles play an important role in higher reading processes as well as in the expression of psychopathology, namely among children with reading disabilities

    No full text
Transport is one of the main activities of the chain of supplies, and it has great importance currently, for its relevance according to the concept of marketing mix and for representing the largest activity of the physical distribution. Traditionally, logistics concentrated their efforts in the physical flow of the process, while the flow of information for many years had no attention that deserved. Nowadays it is impossible to think in transports without to add values of technology of the information that became an important area for success of the business. This essay aims to demonstrate the technologies of information that can be used in activity than-truckload transportation and the use of technologies has contributed to increased competitiveness and productivity of enterprises in the sector. Will be addressed in this work the EDI technology, communications, Radio Frequency, Bars code and RFID. Importantly, these are some technologies, not all available in the wide market of IT (Information Technology) and these technologies are not alone responsible for business results, because the success is the sum of several factors management. The study of the case demonstrates the positive results and demonstrates the real magnitude of information technology in the "core business" of transport companies to load, since it allowed the company to contribute to productivity gains, speed, accuracy, reliability, traceability and responses to customers would be impossible without the use of technology, and monitoring of all stages of business operations

    Reading Processes and Parenting Styles

Home literacy environment explains between 12 and 18.5% of the variance of children’s language skills. Although most authors agree that children whose parents encourage them to read tend to develop better and earlier reading skills, some authors consider that the impact of family environment in reading skills is overvalued. Probably, other variables of parent–child relationship, like parenting styles, might be relevant for this field. Nevertheless, no previous studies on the effect of parenting styles in literacy have been found. To analyze the role of parenting styles in the reading processes of children. Children’s perceptions of parenting styles contribute significantly to the explanation of statistical variance of children’s reading processes. 110 children (67 boys and 43 girls), aged between 7 and 11 years (M=9.22 and SD = 1.14) from Portuguese schools answered to a socio-demographic questionnaire. To assess reading processes it was administered the Portuguese adaptation (Figueira et al. in press) of Bateria de Avaliação dos Processos Leitores-Revista (PROLEC-R). To assess the parenting styles Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran-parents (EMBU-P) and EMBU-C (children version) were administered. According to multiple hierarchical linear regressions, individual factors contribute to explain all reading tests of PROLEC-R, while family factors contribute to explain most of these tests. Regarding parenting styles, results evidence the explanatory power about grammatical structures, sentence comprehension and listening. Parenting styles have an important role in the explanation of higher reading processes (syntactic and semantic) but not in lexical processes, focused by main theories concerning dyslexia
