Evaluation and management of metabolic and coagulative disorders in HIV-infected patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy.
A number of metabolic disorders, including hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance, elevated fasting glucose and diabetes mellitus, were reported in a high proportion of HIV-infected patients receiving highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Less frequently, coagulative disorders were described in patients receiving HAART. Since all these metabolic disorders may predispose to coronary heart disease, an early evaluation and treatment is advisable. Existing guidelines for uninfected patients may be applied, taking into account, however, the potential for drug interactions and accumulated toxicity. It may be helpful to stratify all patients in three risk groups to plan regular diagnostic screening. Treatment of dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus should include a first-line approach with non-pharmacological interventions. Statins and fibrates are proposed for HIV-infected patients with HAART-related hyperlipidemia, but concern has been raised on their potential for interaction with antiretrovirals and hepatic and muscle toxicity. Metformin and thiazolidenediones (or glitazones), hypoglycemic agents that increase insulin sensitivity, are presently under evaluation in diabetic and glucose-intolerant HIV-infected patients treated with HAART. Glitazones also have a potential for ameliorating the lipodystrophic syndrome. The routine evaluation of coagulative parameters is probably not advisable until a benefit of widespread screening is assessed in prospective studies. A heightened awareness of the possiblity of coagulative disorders, together with controlled trials and basic research, is needed
Dynamic models of the main sub-assemblies of a high performance engine
This thesis focuses on the analytical methodologies developed for the dynamic study of operational subsystems for the correct design of high performance internal combustion engines. The engine design phase is a synthesis of several concurrent engineering activities. An internal combustion engine is a highly complex system made by self-interacting sub-assemblies, each of which requires very specic skills and detailed know-how to be designed: it is nevertheless impossible to design each single component without considering its proper function and how it works coupled with all the other sub-assemblies in the complex engine system.
This thesis will explore dierent topics and for each will give a detailed explanation of the analytical approach used to investigate and solve any specic task. The main matter discussed in this work is how to approach and analyse a lumped mass model both the single valve train and the complete chain drive system with a bending-torsional deformable camshaft in order to consider the self-interaction of the dierent valve train systems. In addition this lumped mass model approach is also used to compute and analyse in detail the complex dynamic behaviour of the whole chain drive system. A detailed 2D approach was also used to model the dynamic behaviour for each single link of a roller or silent timing chain drive. As a result it was possible to obtain a reliable and highly accurate model that can be used for calculating the timing drive eigenvectors as well as to describe and analyse the complex dynamic behaviour of hydraulic tensioners and for each chain link the capability to evaluate its tilt angle and the contact impact with the guides.
In this thesis belt drive systems are also analysed. The dynamics and vibration of axially moving continua have been extensively studied. The most important output of the study conducted concerns the fact that to gain into the real dynamic behaviour of a serpentine belt drive system it is necessary to use a statistical approach: a deterministic approach is not sucient to detect the real dynamic response of such a complex dynamic problem.
Lastly, the crankshaft dynamics has been in-depth analysed. A parametric model for the multi-cylinder engines has been developed. The contribution of the inertia unbalanced forces has been recognised as important. Various industrial case studies have been analysed. The modelling of the crankshaft dynamics allows the denition of external forces exerted on the engine and transmitted to the chassis through the engine mounts. The theoretical bases for the development of a predictive multibody model of the powertrain dynamics under the action of such external forces have been laid

Copyright, contratto e accesso alla conoscenza: un’analisi comparata = Copyright, contract and access to knowledge: a comparative analysis.
= ENGLISH VERSION = Along with a comparative perspective that takes account of the U.S. and Italian law, this work aims to explore the interface between copyright and contract lae in publishing process.
In the current publishing environment, contracts and technology play a dominant role in the exploitation of copyrighted works. Publishers are granted by assignment of all copyright rights to reproduce and publish the work, but also to exercise control over its contents through technological protection measures. At the same time, mass digitization allows libraries and other organizations to make contents available online, which it entails a redefinition of the traditional publishing process and introduces new players to the scene (e.g., Google Books).
Hence, technology proves to be a powerful instrument for the spread of knowledge and it is on this pattern that Open Access (OA) is rapidly gaining ground.
Mostly based on a bottom-up approach that is on soft law, institutional policies and contracts, OA designs a new legal environment targeting the objectives of free accessibility, further distribution, and proper archiving of publications. These aims can be achieved through the creation of new open access business models to publish on OA journals (gold road) or to self-archive in institutional or disciplinary repositories works that have been originally published in conventional journals (green road).
However, in order for OA to be fully developed it is necessary to devise a principled and feasible approach to the dissemination of scholarly works against the current social, economic and legal background.
Indeed, the importance of OA is steadily recognized by legislators who integrate OA provisions into their legal system. This is an innovation of great significance, which was first fostered in the USA, and then extended in some European countries such as Italy and Germany in the European framework. Nevertheless, considering the different law systems, the formal law need to be combined with national strategies and institutional policies providing adequate incentives to the authors, while also promoting academic freedom and the right to knowledge access

Inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase expression by yuccaol C from Yucca schidigera roezl.
Yucca schidigera extract finds wide commercial application in foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. In a previous paper we have found as the main constituents of yucca bark, yuccaol A, B and C, new and very unusual spiro-derivatives made up of a C15 unit and a stilbenic portion closely related to resveratrol. This study was performed to examine whether yuccaol A, B or C (0.01-100 microM) could affect cytosolic inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) protein expression and nitric oxide (NO) generation in vitro in Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated J774.A1 macrophage cell line. NO production, detected as NO2-, increased significantly in LPS treated J774.A1 cells from 0.05 +/- 0.03 microM to 16.64 +/- 0.58 microM (P < 0.001). Yuccaol C (0.01-100 microM), added to the culture medium 1 h before LPS-stimulation, significantly (P < 0.001) and in a concentration related manner reduced NO release (P < 0.001) and iNOS protein expression (P < 0.05). In contrast, no inhibitory effect either on iNOS protein expression or on NO release was observed when yuccaol C was added after LPS stimulation. In contrast yuccaol A inhibited significantly (P < 0.001) only NO release at the highest concentration tested (100 microM) while yuccaol B did not reduce either NO release or iNOS expression. Yuccaol C was demonstrated to reduce iNOS protein expression via the transcription factor NF-kappaB. These results indicated that the empirical use of Y. schidigera as anti-inflammatory remedy could be addressed not only to the resveratrol content but also to the presence of yuccaol C
Materia-autore = Author-Matter
The etymology of the word author refers to an act of creation, an act of augmentation, from the Latin verb augere. Author instantiates creation, the expansion of the pre-existing. In 1967 Roland Barthes declared the death of the author in his famous essay to state once more that the crisis is that of the author as a single subjectivity and as a term that condenses prestige, undermined by the de-subjectivation strategies of automatism, fortuity and fragmentation of the historical avant-gardes, as well as by the machinic act and by the reproducibility of the second avant-gardes.
Fifty years after Barthes’ paradigmatic formula, this lack of authorship appears to be a successful brand. The ten- sions between the anomie of matter, the law that establishes authorship and the economy that makes the work pos- sible, invoke discordant perspectives. Artists make the self-destruction of their work the real work, and appeal is made for the demolition of architectures, whether by a recognised author or not, in order to re-design, or better still, re-claim the territory. Artificial intelligence consolidates its logics and its design by progressively shedding human ingenuity. The space of criticism becomes, finally, increasingly ephemeral. However, there is an acceptation of criti- cism that is, rather than an individual ‘signature’, an exploration and explanation of how design makes theory.
The binomial author-matter seeks to mark these tensions and contradictions: the featured term author is main- tained to underline the persistence of that prestigious subjectivity, at the very moment when the rhetoric of “mat- ter as an author” promises other forms of authorship
