Liberalism, Federalism and Constitutionalism: Rui Barbosa and 1891”s constitution

    No full text
The work is based on Gildo Marçal Brandão's free teaching thesis who, taking up the concepts of “utopian idealism” and “organic idealism” originally formulated by Oliveira Vianna, proposes to think about “lineages” of Brazilian political and social thought. Within this project, we start from Vianna's own criticism of Rui Barbosa, accusing the latter of being a “utopian idealist”, which, in short, would mean giving excessive importance to constitutional models to the detriment of the socio-cultural reality. At this point, Oliveira Vianna, intending to carry out his “culturological” analysis of the country, defines himself as an “organic idealist”. The objective of the work is, therefore, to review the Oliveira Vianna's critique of Rui Barbosa. For its development, we will revisit the period of the First Republic, period in which Rui Barbosa lived and worked intensely. In this way, we will also analyze Rui's political positions, with emphasis on its contribution and interpretation regarding the 1891 constitution, which marked the transition from the monarchic to the republican period.O trabalho parte da tese de livre docência de Gildo Marçal Brandão que, retomando os conceitos de “idealismo utópico” e “idealismo orgânico” originalmente formulados por Oliveira Vianna, propõe a pensar “linhagens” do pensamento político e social brasileiro.

The trombone as portrayed in Portuguese iconography during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries

    No full text
This article studies eleven sixteenth and seventeenth century iconographical sources depicting slide brass instruments, by both Portuguese and foreign artists active in Portugal, as well as foreign artists depicting Portuguese scenes. This study addresses questions concerning aspects of trombone technique that have not previously been considered and may have implications in the way the trombone was understood elsewhere in Europe. It focuses on aspects of technique depicted that may be representative of the trombone’s contemporary design and performance and therefore the manner in which the instrument was held and indeed played. Finally, this article suggests a transitional technical period when the way of holding the single-slide trumpet may have been used to play the trombone.Publisher PD

Portfolio management with higher moments: the cardinality impact

    No full text
This paper extends the study of the cardinality impact on portfolio performance, from the traditional mean-variance framework to more general frameworks that include higher moments. For each framework, we propose a biobjective model that allows the investor to explicitly analyze the efficient trade-off between expected utility and cardinality. We applied the proposed methodology to data from the Portuguese Stock Index (PSI20 index). The empirical results show that, in-sample, the certainty equivalent and the Sharpe ratio increase with the cardinality level in all frameworks. The results also suggest that there are no performance gains, in-sample, in terms of certainty equivalent, when higher moments are considered. Out of sample, the turnover increases up to a certain cardinality level, then decreases. For certain cardinality levels, there are gains in terms of out-of-sample certainty equivalent and Sharpe ratio, when skewness and kurtosis are considered. Finally, we check the robustness of these results in a large dataset from the EUROSTOXX50 index.Support for Rui Pedro Brito author was provided by FCT under the scholarship SFRH/BD/94778/2013

A Workflow Description Language to Orchestrate Multi-Lingual Resources

    No full text
Texts aligned alongside their translation, or Parallel Corpora, are a very widely used resource in Computational Linguistics. Processing these resources, however, is a very intensive, time consuming task, which makes it a suitable case study for High Performance Computing (HPC). HPC underwent several recent changes, with the evolution of Heterogeneous Platforms, where multiple devices with different architectures are able to share workload to increase performance. Several frameworks/toolkits have been under development, in various fields, to aid the programmer in extracting more performance from these platforms. Either by dynamically scheduling the workload across the available resources or by exploring the opportunities for parallelism. However, there is no toolkit targeted at Computational Linguistics, more specifically, Parallel Corpora processing. Parallel Corpora processing can be a very time consuming task, and the field could definitely use a toolkit which aids the programmer in achieving not only better performance, but also a convenient and expressive way of specifying tasks and their dependencies
