La Virtù sconosciuta e la forma dialogica

    No full text
The essay constitutes an attempt to apply to Alfieri's dialogue La virtu sconosciuta a formal reading focalizing on the peculiarity of the dialogue form used by the short work. A brief comparison with the relevant tradition known to the author and an analysis conducted on the basis of the historical-theoretical profile of the genre highlight the clear-headedness and coherence with which Alfi- eri employs the dialogue form in composing a text that occupies a prominent position within the Eighteenth-century canon

The disaster literature plays a crucial role in the 18th century culture of the Enlightenment, in particular in southern Italy. Among the literary genres used by the intellectuals there is also the dialogue, which two ‘minor’ authors such as the Calabrian Onofrio De Colaci (1746-1799) and the Apulian Francesco Antonio Astore (1742-1799) choose to discuss, respectively, the great earthquake of 1783 and the Vesuvius eruption of 1794. Both of them, right through the dialogue morphology, offer an important testimony about the enlightened sensitivity faced with the natural disasters, by distinguishing between true and false knowledge, science and superstition, primacy of the things and poetic imagination. The works in question, the Dialoghi intorno a’ tremuoti and the Dialoghi sul Vesuvio, therefore constitute a significant example of the need to study the Enlightenment thought of the Italian Mezzogiorno with the instruments of literary criticism.

A survey of literary text comprehension: applications, findings, and research perspectives The paper outlines the activities carried out about the literary text within the LeCo project (2019-2021), dedicated to the problem of reading comprehension for secondary school students. The theoretical premises, applications, programs and some preliminary results are illustrated, within a research framework that enhances the relationships between literary education and language education. In order to study the students’ skills and try to improve them, in fact, it is necessary to start from the “use value” of literature and its specificities, but also from the central role of language

Despite the absence of specific treatises or systematic analyses on the dialogue in the Italian Literature of the 18th century, a theory of this ‘genre’ can be outlined through the study of the paratexts. In the prefaces and the dedications of several dialogues, in fact, there are reflections focused on the use of this literary form: by connecting these fragments of poetics, it is possible to follow the development of the Renaissance dialogue theory and, at the same time, to explore a new tradition

The essay aims to analyse the Discorsi letterari e filosofici by Francesco Lomonaco, a book representative of the role that the author played in the transition from the Enlightenment to the Romantic culture. The exemplary importance of the work is testified, in particular, by its form and by the way it hosts the moralism of Lomonaco, who eloquently dialogues – in addition to Vico and the related tradition – with Foscolo, Manzoni and Leopardi

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
