Potential barriers to international exchange semesters at Stellenbosch University
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.ENGLISH SUMMARY : Higher education is challenged by the changing climate created by globalisation and the phenomenon of internationalisation. Internationalisation of higher education provides a platform for institutions to engage with counterparts across the world in a manner that would enhance the quality of all aspects of the institution, but also poses a number of challenges to institutions and higher education systems. The literature review of the study sketches the background to the study and analyses some of the above-mentioned opportunities and challenges.
The study researched one aspect of internationalisation, namely the mobility of undergraduate students. The mobility of students can take place through an array of activities that includes summer school programmes, internships, or tailored short programmes. This study focuses on one type of mobility, namely an international exchange semester.
The study stemmed from the actual problem at Stellenbosch University where a major imbalance exists in the number of students received from partner universities and of Stellenbosch students taking part in a semester at the partner university.
The rationale and practice of international exchange semesters in four Faculties were analysed on multiple levels by means of a case study design. The four case studies were concluded in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of AgriSciences and the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and within these Faculties the investigation was restricted to general-formative programmes. Data were collected and analysed at four levels of each Faculty, namely the climate that is created through Faculty strategy, the views and perspectives of students in their final and pre-final year, the view and perspectives of programme coordinators, and finally, the views on a managerial level by means of the inputs of deputy deans.
Each of the case studies reveals specific issues and opportunities for international exchange semesters within the particular Faculty, yet, the comparative perspectives reveal that the major barriers to student mobility are consistent across faculties, and that particularly the type of information available, the applicability of that information within the particular academic environment and financial aspects are consistently identified by students in all four Faculties. The barriers identified by staff, both on departmental and management level, resonate with the barriers identified by students, but further illustrate more specific organisational and pedagogical challenges linked to the implementation of international exchange semesters.
The study not only makes a contribution to a deeper understanding of existing challenges pertaining to international mobility by means of an exchange semester but it also makes specific recommendations to address these challenges and poses alternatives to existing practices.AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING : Hoër onderwys word uitgedaag deur die veranderende omgewing as gevolg van globalisering en deur die verskynsel van internasionalisering.
Master
Huba - Pâte de verre -tekniikalla valmistettu uniikki lasiveistos
The objective of this final project with thesis was to design and produce a unique glass sculpture for a customer. The customer wanted a unique elephant-sculpture made of glass. The sculpture was designed for his wife as a gift for their 40th wedding anniversary. The priority goal for the author was to design a sculpture that does not only please the customer but also develops the author’s skills in designing. The sculpture was produced by using the pâte de verre technique. The technique was chosen to challenge the author to evolve as a designer and glass maker. In this report the author describes the process development of the elephant-sculpture from start to finish.
Another objective of this final project with thesis for the author was to go deeper into the pâte de verre technique and to present it more closely. The author separated the instructions of the technique as its own chapter from the other parts of the report. This way one can find a specific part of the technique they want without having to find it elsewhere in the text. In the description of the technique the author focused on describing the making of a glass sculpture by using the lost-wax technique of pâte de verre
Modeling Amateur Radio Soundings of the Ionospheric Response to the 2017 Great American Eclipse
On 21 August 2017, a total solar eclipse traversed the continental United States and caused large-scale changes in ionospheric densities. These were detected as changes in medium-and high-frequency radio propagation by the Solar Eclipse QSO Party citizen science experiment organized by the Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation (hamsci.org). This is the first eclipse-ionospheric study to make use of measurements from a citizen-operated, global-scale HF propagation network and develop tools for comparison to a physics-based model ionosphere. Eclipse effects were observed +/- 0.3 hr on 1.8 MHz, +/- 0.75 hr on 3.5 and 7 MHz, and +/- 1 hr on 14 MHz and are consistent with eclipse-induced ionospheric densities. Observations were simulated using the PHaRLAP raytracing toolkit in conjunction with the eclipsed SAMI3 ionospheric model. Model results suggest 1.8, 3.5, and 7 MHz refracted at h >= 125 km altitude with elevation angles theta >= 22 degrees, while 14 MHz signals refracted at h p and DST indices were obtained from the Kyoto WDC. F10.7 data were accessed through the OMNI database at the NASA Space Physics Data Facility. GOES data are provided by NOAA SWPC. RBN data are provided by reversebeacon.net, with thanks to F. Ceglia, P. Smith, and R. Williams. We thank the global amateur radio community and the ARRL for making the SEQP possible. The results published in this paper were obtained using the HF propagation toolbox, PHaRLAP, created by Manuel Cervera, Defence Science and Technology Group, Australia ([email protected]). This toolbox is available by request from its author. SAMI3 outputs are available by contacting J. Huba at [email protected]. We acknowledge the use of the Free Open Source Software projects used in this analysis: Ubuntu Linux, python, matplotlib, NumPy, SciPy, pandas, and others. NAF thanks R. M. Frissell and L. J. Understanding and developing combat power.
The author identifies a need to take a hard look at the analytical methods now used in the Army relating to force structuring, doctrine development, materiel development and tactical analysis. He shows that decisions in the above area depend upon an understanding of the key concept ""combat power"" and the combat power development process. He contends that much of current analytical methodology, including computer assisted simulations and mathematical ORSA techniques, does not adequately deal with the phenomenon of land combat. Many of the key variables on the battlefield are unquantifiable and thus mathematical models run the risk of biasing results in favor of the purely mechanical aspects of warfare. The author develops an analytical framework for understanding combat power and the process of generating it to win battles which borrows methodology from the social sciences. It relates all army functions and describes how these relate to the development of combat power. It allows the decision maker to recognize the variables he can control in a given situation and the trade offs available to him. This analytical framework has applicability for the teaching of tactics and operations; the evaluation of unit readiness; the development of force structures; the identification of materiel and resource needs; and the development of doctrines and future concepts

Final report, Army Staff College level training study, 13 June 1983.
Historical experience underscores the fundamental truth that an army which must fight outnumbered, under difficult circumstances and with limited resources, must rely heavily on the professional excellence of its officer corps, and, therefore must place a high priority on the excellence of its officers' professional training and education. Military excellence has always depended on an officer corps which could think creatively about war- one which understood principles and theories of war. The intent of this study is to present an analysis of the Command and General Staff College's ability to train and educate the Army's officer corps now and to examine what needs to be done to increase its effectiveness to meet the challenges facing the US Army as we approach the year 2000. This report is an evaluation of mid-career training and education needs of US Army officers and the ability of the Command and General Staff College to meet those needs. It evaluates and summarizes other recent findings and recommendations of other studies. In addition, the author conducts his own evaluation of the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) and outside influences impinging on it, and compares CGSC to foreign staff college programs. The author concludes that the Army’s staff college level training requires upgrading to meet future demands and that this upgrading depends on a reorientation of assets and resources at the highest levels as well as actions within the means of the Commandant of CGSC. Topics include: challenge for the future- educating field grade battle leaders and officers; problems in meeting this challenge; CGSC curriculum focus- three levels of complexity; teaching/learning methodologies; faculty shortfalls; CGSOC student body diversity; and college organization for teaching. Annexes include teaching the science and art of war, a summary of recent external studies of CGSC, staff training in other armies, proposed CGSOC curriculum, proposed college organization of doctrine development, and advanced military studies program
Protection of nature, landscape and environment and its social reflection in Slovakia in 1990 – 2020
Slovak nature, landscape and environment, as well as organizations and initiatives for their protection have undergone complex developments over the past 30 years. Perception of the issue by general public was similarly complex. In an attempt to be precise, this development should be characterized ambiguously. Progress in reducing air, water and other environmental pollution has been accompanied by unprecedented disrespect for its other components, in particular for vegetation, fertile arable land, which is accompanied by an overall long-term underfunding of environmental care and lagging behind in building environmental infrastructure (especially sewers and wastewater treatment plants) as well as in finding solutions to the issue of old environmental burdens.
This article focuses on a brief description of the state and development of different components of the environment, successes and failures in their protection, as well as the role of specific actors in this process. The author also include the results of some of the research which focused at reflection of these issues by the public
Identifikacija posestnih enot srednjeveškega urbarja: Primer »zemljiškega gospostva« cerkve v Lescah
The author investigates the estate history of the ecclesiastical seigniory in Lesce and identifies individual estate units through a retrospective analysis of historical sources from the period between the 14th and 19th century. Of the twelve peasant hides (huba, Hufe) documented at the end of the 16th century, four belonged to the church of Lesce, two to the benefice, which provided the chaplain with regular income, and another two to the ecclesiastical seigniory in the narrow sense of the word. The central estate of the seigniory, which the church retained in its hands for the entire duration of the aforementioned period, encompassed six farms: one in Lesce, Breg ob Bistrici, Gorica and Smokuč, and two in Hlebce.
Contribution of Slovak Directors to the Profile of the Czech Opera Theatre After 1993
The ambition of the survey study, which maps the work of Slovak directors in Czech opera theatres after 1993, is to identify the number of Slovak creators in the opera-theatre discourse of the very closely connected countries in terms of culture and history while at the same time adding the professional biographies of Slovak artists – who are little known and reflected upon in their homeland – and parts of their works. The author concludes that the split of the Czechoslovak Republic and the subsequent creation of separate Czech and Slovak Republics did not have an adverse effect on the mutual contacts of our opera cultures. At present, we even enjoy intensified co-operation in both directions. The nonjudgmental attitude of Czech theatres towards the influence of Slovak film directors in the Czech Republic is clear: not only credible creators (Marián Chudovský), but also representatives of the younger generation of opera directors (Andrea Hlinková) and renowned drama directors with previous opera experience (Martin Huba, Roman Polák), as well as creators who had not yet worked on the opera scene at home (Martin Čičvák, Sláva Daubnerová) were presented with an opportunity to contribute. Despite the fact that their works represented the enrichment of the Czech opera-theatre, the Slovak director with the most significant contribution to the Czech opera theatre remains Jozef Bednárik, even two decades later
