Protestantism and Education: Reading (the Bible) and other Skills

    Get PDF
During industrialization, Protestants were more literate than Catholics. This paper investigates whether this fact may be led back to the intrinsic motivation of Protestants to read the bible and whether other education motives were involved as well. We employ a historical data set from Switzerland which allows us to differentiate between different cognitive skills: reading, numeracy, essay writing and Swiss history. We develop an estimation strategy to examine whether the impact of religious denomination was particularly large with respect to reading capabilities. We find support for this hypothesis. However, Protestants’ education motives went beyond reading the bible.cognitive skills, education, reading capability, religious denomination, protestant reformation

Firm Dynamics and Growth Measurement in France

    No full text
International audienceStatistical agencies typically impute inflation for disappearing products based on surviving products, which may result in overstated inflation and understated growth. Philippe Aghion, Antonin Bergeaud, Timo Boppart & Simon Bunel use the theory and methodology developed by Aghion et al. (2017) to quantify in the case of France how much of productivity growth is missed by statistical offices because of this. Using the census of plants in France, they find that from 2004 to 2015, about 0.5 percentage point of real output growth per year is not taken into account, which is about the same as what was found in the U.S. While this result suggests that missing growth from creative destruction could structurally be the same in different countries, the authors show that they in fact hide different underlying establishment and firm's lifecycle dynamics in the two countries

This dataset contains all testcase setup files and result files for the measurements presented in the Master's thesis with the title "Efficient Application of Accelerator Cards for the Coupling Library preCICE" (Author: Timo Pierre Schrader). Furthermore, it contains the version of preCICE used throughout this thesis. The thesis revolves around GPU acceleration of RBF data mapping in preCICE. See the README for more information how to build and run the testcase

Structural change and the Kaldor facts in a growth model with relative price effects and non-Gorman preferences

    Get PDF
Growth of per-capita income is associated with (i) significant shifts in the sectoral economic structure, (ii) systematic changes in relative prices and (iii) the Kaldor facts. Moreover, (iv) cross-sectional data shows systematic expenditure structure difference between rich and poor households. Ngai and Pissarides (2006) and Acemoglu and Guerrieri (2008) are consistent with observation (i)-(iii) but abstract form non-homotheticities of preferences. However, they cannot replicate the structural change between the U.S. goods and service sector quantitatively. This paper presents a growth model, which reconciles both forces of structural change - relative price and income effects - with balanced growth on the aggregate. The theory is simple and parsimonious and contains an analytical solution. The model can replicate shape and magnitude of the nonbalanced sectoral facts as well as the balanced nature of growth on the aggregate. In a structural estimation, the model’s functional form is exploited to obtain estimates for the relative importance of income and price effects as determinants of the structural change.Structural change, relative price effect, non-Gorman preferences, Kaldor facts.

    Integrated epi-econ assessment of vaccination

    Get PDF
Using an integrated epi-econ model, we compute the value of vaccines for Covid-19, both under a planner's solution and in competitive equilibrium. The specific model, developed in Boppart, Harmenberg, Hassler, Krusell, and Olsson (2020), factors in not just value-of-life aspects along with standard economic variables but also the value of leisure activities that rely on a social component. We find that the societal value of vaccination is large; we estimate that, translated into monetary terms, the value of vaccinating one young individual in the competitive equilibrium is $17,800. Externalities are large: less than half the societal value is internalized by individuals (assuming that they act purely in their self-interest). Finally, behavioral responses are important, with a substantial share of the value of vaccines being attributed to people enjoying more socially-oriented leisure when more people are vaccinated.</p

This article presents a study on community-based art education at the University of Lapland in Finland. First, the main guidelines of this training model and its curriculum are analysed. Second, the author includes an interview with Timo Jokela, Dean of the Faculty of Art and Design of The University of Lapland in Finland and Director of the Department of Art Education at the same faculty. In the interview Timo Jokela draws upon his own experience as an artist in Finland to talk about the relationships between art, the environment, community and education. He also talks about the social, cultural, artistic and educational aspects, which are central to the community-based art education scheme in place at The University of Lapland
