Smith reached the summit of the Mont Blanc in 1851. Back in London, he transformed his adventure into a book and into a show, staged every day for 6 years. Albert Smith is a key character in the passage into the imagination of the Mont Blanc, from a place of the sublime to a mass tourist destination. The paper aims at reconstructing the link between Smith and the Mont Blanc through a plurality of perspectives, combining aspects closely related to a literary approach and others linked to the geography of literature.

"Mechanisms of modal and amodal interpolation": Postcript

    No full text
Presents some additional comments by the current author regarding his original article Mechanisms of modal and amodal interpolation (see record 2007-05396-010). This debate has evolved to the point where there is now some agreement that there are significant commonalities between modal and amodal representations and processes. However, disagreements remain about the interpretation of experimental results. Some of these disagreements, along with points of agreement, are discussed. There has been increasing research activity on the physiological side of this issue, and the next few years may provide much more definitive evidence about the relationship between modal and amodal representations

This study is aimed at understanding the relationship between organizational identity and core competence. Origin, conception relationships and identification methodology give support to analyses, theoretical relationships and management practices. Organizational identity is a collective construct that leads to: (a) interaction between individual and collective levels, (b) the individual perception about what the organization is, which results from the dialetic relationship between collective shared knowledge and (c) personal knowledge socially acquired. Organizational identity refers to the question #who we are as an organization# (ALBERT; WHETTEN, 1985). Core competence is understood as a special organization ability that is characterized by tree criteria: to contribute significantly to a costumer or product benefict; to be unique so that it can hardly be imitated by its competing companies and to potentially permit the access to a large variety of markets (HAMEL E PRAHALAD, 1990). This theoretic study is focused on the relationship between the Organizational Identity and the Core Competence and shows that the Identity can be a Core Competence of an organization, can support or be a drawback to new competences development, increases during changing processes, play an important role in the decision making processes and, as a matter of fact, in Knowledge Management

The relationship between civic attitudes and voting intention : an analysis of vocational upper secondary schools in England and Singapore

    Get PDF
From 2009 to 2011, a team from the Centre for Learning and Life Chances in Knowledge Economies and Societies carried out a mixedmethods study of young people in England and Singapore. With regard to civic attitudes, the study showed that there was a greater sense of political self-efficacy and collective (school) efficacy in Singapore than in England. In addition, the group in Singapore scored higher on future voting relative to the group in England. Further, while both political self-efficacy and collective (school) efficacy were correlated with future voting in England, only the latter was correlated in the case of Singapore. For some, the results may seem counter-intuitive. The article reflects on these results, particularly those relating to democratic outcomes

The book of Albert Robida Le Vingtième Siècle, under the guise of a coming-of-age novel set within a tale of scientific anticipation, actually conceals an accurate and interesting description of the transformations induced on the city of Paris by the new electronic technologies and, above all, the impact of these on social behaviour (and formations) in the urban context. The framework traced by the author thus reveals a technological progress aimed in part at improving living conditions and the progress of the person, but within a general context in which the economic powers seem to be the real directors, profiting widely from the transformations induced by technology

Imagem, Absurdo e revolta em Albert Camus

This article aims to investigate how the image is important for the reflections about the absurd and the rebellion in the philosophical thought of Albert Camus. For the author, the image provides the occasion for reflection and does not separate itself from it, since the thought by images is configured as a more integral thought, operating in the intercrossing of sensory experience and philosophical reflection. Thus, it can be said that Camus suggests to the philosophy of his time to think about the human condition from the dissolution of boundaries between the philosophical text and the literary narrative, proposing to the philosopher a refusal to the mere construction of conceptual systems that ultimately separate thought and experience. For Camus, such philosophy would be configured through the image, leading to a clear reflection of human existence.
