Emptiness and fastidiousness in Christian Kracht's "Faserland"

    No full text
If not one of the best, Christian Kracht is certainly one of the most talked about authors of fiction in the German language nowadays. His career goes back to 1995, when his first novel "Faserland" was published ‒ an event which helped to shape the so called "Popliteratur". However, whether it is the zero hour of a work composed of other good moments or whether it is the literary mark of a generation, "Faserland" is not only an example of a pop reality. It has also deserved frequent reading and interpretations, reprints and critical approaches, attracting by these means the attention of literary historiography. The novel narrates a few days' wanderings of a narcotized and affluent young man from Northern to Southern Germany reaching as far as Switzerland. There is no great adventure in the story, but the book leaves rather an impression of emptiness and fastidiousness which accompanies a senseless life.

The article refers back to the publishing context ofJoão Guimarães Rosa’s Sagarana in 1946 by focusingon some of the reviews and documents published in thepress at the time. We depart from a collection of cuttingsorganized by Rosa himself and which now belongsto the Fundo João Guimarães Rosa of the Instituto deEstudos Brasileiros of the Universidade de São Paulo. Our intention is to observe the book’s entry in the literarylocal canon. Amongst matters of genre, style, originalityand repetition we also discuss the polemic raisedby Álvaro Lins’s inaugurating article, accused of promotingthe book in exchange for a position favored byItamaraty, institution where Guimarães Rosa worked. Our purpose is to provide an investigation on the factorswhich construct a literary name, apart from theliterary excellence credited to Guimarães Rosa’s text.O artigo recupera o contexto da publicação do Sagarana (1946), de João Guimarães Rosa, privilegiando determinados aspectos que sobressaem na leitura dos documentos críticos publicados na imprensa do período.

The parallel between the novels Berlin Alexanderplatz and Grande Sertão: Veredas was first drawn within the Brazilian literary criticism in a comment made by Davi Arrigucci Jr. With the intent of pursuing the discussion raised by the author, this article proposes a more detailed analysis of the elements which define both texts as representative works of the modern novel discourse. The analysis focuses on the movements which characterize the trajectories taken by the protagonists Franz Biberkopf and Riobaldo, with a view on the character\' transit in space, as well as emotionally, and also in regard to the transit that operates the narration within both novels. In this light, the article outlines the particularities which situate both novels within the tradition that associates them with the books Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre and L\'Éducation Sentimentale

\"Impatience of knowledge\": approximations to The Sleepwalkers by Hermann Broch

This research is devoted to Herman Brochs trilogy The sleepwalkers. The focus of our interest lies on the historical and constructive aspects of the novels Pasenow the romantic, Esch the anarchist and Huguenau the realist. The study is divided in two parts. The first one contains a discussion on the literary and historical context, on the authors thought and on theoretical questions about the novel as a genre. In our view, the trilogy offers a unique commentary upon the crisis of the novel around 1930. Moreover, we take Brochs ideas as an ethics of totality and we propose a realist and metaphysical rhetoric as a key device of the text of The sleepwalkers. The second part consists of observations on the narrative composition, in which we analyze the dynamics of similarities and differences among the three titles. Our aim is to provide a framework for the understanding of the trilogys literary place and specificity. Impatience of knowledge in Broch means poetry capable of anticipating science, novel being able to anticipate philosophy

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
