In this latest Advance & Rutgers Report, entitled “A Tripartite Post-Recession Rebalancing,” Dean James W. Hughes and Professor Joseph J. Seneca deliver an incisive assessment of the current market conditions and obstacles in the path of our economic recovery. They offer a statistical cautionary tale that the private and public sector need to hear and acknowledge in order for the economy to make continued progress. This report was published as Issue Paper Number 7, November 2011, in Advance & Rutgers Report

Evidence for the decay B0→J/ψω and measurement of the relative branching fractions of meson decays to J/ψη and J/ψη′

    No full text
    First evidence of the B 0 → J / ψ ω decay is found and the B s 0 → J / ψ η and B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0 decay:frac(B (B 0 → J / ψ ω), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 0.89 ± 0.19 (stat) - 0.13 + 0.07 (syst),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 14.0 ± 1.2 (stat) - 1.5 + 1.1 (syst) - 1.0 + 1.1 (frac(f d, f s)),frac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B 0 → J / ψ ρ 0)) = 12.7 ± 1.1 (stat) - 1.3 + 0.5 (syst) - 0.9 + 1.0 (frac(f d, f s)), where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of f d / f s, the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of B 0 and B s 0 mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of B s 0 → J / ψ η ′ and B s 0 → J / ψ η decays is measured to befrac(B (B s 0 → J / ψ η ′), B (B s 0 → J / ψ η)) = 0.90 ± 0.09 (stat) - 0.02 + 0.06 (syst)

Public Information Platform "Post-industrial and degraded areas" (OPI TPP) - modern tool for information management system regarding post-industrial areas in Silesia Voivodeship

Opracowywany system OPI-TPP będzie docelowo zapewniał ciągłość i aktualność danych o terenach poprzemysłowych i zdegradowanych, stając się bogatym i ogólnodostępnym źródłem informacji regionalnej. Umożliwia ona jednoznaczną i spójną klasyfikację danego terenu z wykorzystaniem zdefiniowanego katalogu czynników, służącego do oceny jego potencjału i walorów (Trząski, Olszewski, Bondaruk i in. 2008). Podstawę systemu stanowi jego powiązanie z innymi zasobami danych przestrzennych oraz źródeł informacji, tworzącymi zintegrowany regionalny węzeł informacji przestrzennej zgodny z wytycznymi Dyrektywy INSPIRE i przepisami implementacyjnymi. System OPI-TPP, w postaci portalu dziedzinowego, będzie docelowo integralnym elementem regionalnego portalu ORSIP.Spatial Information Systems (SIP) in recent years are one of the rapidly growing areas of research and implementation activities. Regulations introduced by Directive INSPIRE offer tremendous opportunities to multidisciplinary apply of SIP. They are used today not only for the digitization and visualization of reality, but are more and more frequently complex tool for support of decision-making processes (Aspinal, Pearson 2000; Brody et al. 1995; Hirschfeld et al. 2005; Janowski, Szulwic 2004; Janssen, Uran 2003). In Silesia, particularly in the central subregion, are situated specific objects and post-industrial areas. In spite of a significant degradation those terrain are indicated as a resource, which have investment, cultural, and also natural rational value. An barrier limiting the possibility of their redevelopment is the lack of reliable and actual information on these areas and their vicinity with particular emphasis on environmental aspects. These data, if any exist, are scattered, incomplete and fragmented. The created OPI-TPP system will ultimately provide continuity and timeliness of data on postindustrial and degraded areas becoming a comprehensive source of regional information (Kistowski 2007). Within OPI-TPP system was developed and successfully implemented a user-friendly tool for collecting, inserting, verifying and updating data and information on these areas in the form of a web application called eTPP. It allows an unequivocal and coherent classification of the areas based on defined catalog of factors, which is used to assess their potential and values walorów (Trząski, Olszewski, Bondaruk et al. 2008)

The vanishing author in computer-generated works: a critical analysis of recent Australian case law

    No full text
Abstract The use of software is ubiquitous in the creation of many copyright works, yet the requirement in copyright law that every work have a human author who engages in independent intellectual effort means that its use may prevent copyright subsistence. Several recent Australian cases have refocused attention on authorship as an essential criterion of copyright subsistence, and these cases suggest that much computer-produced output may be authorless and thus lack copyright protection. This article, the first in a two-part series, analyses how each case deals with the question of authorship of computer-produced works and why the use of software diminishes copyright protection for a significant number of computer-generated works. The article critiques the application of conventional notions of human authorship developed in the pre-computer age to modern productions and suggests alternative approaches to authorship that satisfy both the major objectives of copyright policy and the need to adapt to the computer age. The article argues that, without a broader judicial approach to authorship of computer-generated works, Parliament must remedy the lacuna in protection for these ‘authorless’ works. Possible solutions for reform are suggested. In a forthcoming article, the author comprehensively examines those reform proposals

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
