    Mark Linz Oral History

    No full text
Mark Linz was director of the American University in Cairo’s AUC Press in the mid-1980s and then from 1995 through 2012. He recounts his publishing career from the 1950s through early 1980s with international publishing houses in New York and elsewhere, beginning in his native Germany. Linz outlines the history and leadership of the AUC Press prior to his arrival as director in 1984, and lays out its reorganization (including steps like upgrading its print shop, introducing a marketing manager, and establishing a bookstore) and financial status and growing role within the university. His return to the directorship in 1995, the Press’ growth in staff, and new marketing and sales strategies are also addressed. Linz discusses the development of the AUC Press’ publishing program and output over the years he was director (and during the time of his first successor), including its focus on Arabic literature in translation and its relationship with author Naguib Mahfouz. Other topics covered are international collaborations and co-publishing, and book design and production. In a separate oral history Linz discusses his experience of the 2011 revolution and its impact on AUC Press and its bookstores and other facilities

The author of this diploma thesis aims to show the hidden world of homosexual men in interwar Linz. In order to accomplish that there has been a critical discussion about four sources. These sources contain of court records from the years 1925 to 1929 which are located in the upperaustrian Landesarchiv in Linz. Furthermore the influences by the contemporary scientific discourse regarding the themes of sexuality and homosexuality on the psychiatric surveys of each accused are being shown and analyzed. To construct this scientific discourse the author uses the works of Richard von Krafft-Ebing, August Forel, Magnus Hirschfeld and Albert Moll, some of which are either supporters of the pathologic or naturalistic approach regarding the questions of homosexuality. The social and spatial boundaries in which male-male actions happened, as well as their penal repercussions are being discussed and shed light upon. Besides those points of focus the self-ascriptions and extrinsic-ascriptions of homosexuals within the sources are playing a major part in this paper. In addition the attention is being drawn towards male prostitution and their impact on the environment in which homosexuals lived in interwar Linz

Functional Mn-Mg-k cation complexes in GaN featured by Raman spectroscopy

    No full text
The evolution of the optical branch in the Raman spectra of (Ga, Mn)N:Mg epitaxial layers as a function of the Mn and Mg concentrations, reveals the interplay between the two dopants. We demonstrate that the various Mn-Mg-induced vibrational modes can be understood in the picture of functional Mn-Mgk complexes formed when substitutional Mn cations are bound to k substitutional Mg through nitrogen atoms, the number of ligands k being driven by the ratio between the Mg and the Mn concentrations. An Introduction to Formal Languages and Automata, 5/E.

    No full text
Written to address the fundamentals of formal languages, automata, and computabilty, An Introduction to Formal Languages and Automata provides an accessible, student-friendly presentation of all material essential to an introductory Theory of Computation course. It is designed to familiarize students with the foundations and principles of computer science and to strengthen the students\u27 ability to carry out formal and rigorous mathematical arguments. In the new Fifth Edition, Peter Linz continues to offer a straightforward, uncomplicated treatment of formal languages and automata and avoids excessive mathematical detail so that students may focus on and understand the underlying principles. In an effort to further the accessibility and comprehension of the text, the author has added new illustrative examples and exercises throughout. New and Key Features of the revised and updated Fifth Edition: Includes a new chapter within the appendices on finite-state transducers, including basic results on Mealy and Moore machines. This optional chapter can be used to prepare students for further related study. Provides an introduction to JFLAP, also within the appendices. Many of the exercises in the text require creating structures that are complicated and that have to be tested for correctness. JFLAP can greatly reduce students time spent on testing as well as help them visualize abstract concepts. A CD-ROM accompanies every new copy of the text and contains the following: A summary description of JFLAP; Numerous new exercises that illustrate the value and efficiency of JFLAP; JFLAP implementations of most of the examples in the text that allow students and instructors to experiment dynamically with these examples

Linear Time Algorithm for Tree-Child Network Containment

    No full text
Phylogenetic networks are used to represent evolutionary scenarios in biology and linguistics. To find the most probable scenario, it may be necessary to compare candidate networks, to distinguish different networks, and to see when one network is embedded in another. Here, we consider the Network Containment problem, which asks whether a given network is contained in another network. We give a linear-time algorithm to this problem for the class of tree-child networks using the recently introduced tree-child sequences by Linz and Semple. We implement this algorithm in Python and show that the linear-time theoretical bound on the input size is achievable in practice.Accepted author manuscriptDiscrete Mathematics and Optimizatio

Adapting authoritarianism: institutions and co-optation in Egypt and Syria

    No full text
This PhD thesis compares Egypt and Syria’s authoritarian political systems. While the tendency in social science political research treats Egypt and Syria as similarly authoritarian, this research emphasizes differences between the two systems with special reference to institutions and co-optation. Rather than reducibly understanding Egypt and Syria as sharing similar histories, institutional arrangements, or ascribing to the oft-repeated convention that “Syria is Egypt but 10 years behind,” this thesis focuses on how events and individual histories shaped each states current institutional strengthens and weaknesses. Specifically, it explains the how varying institutional politicization or de-politicization affects each state’s capabilities for co-opting elite and non-elite individuals. Beginning with a theoretical framework that considers the limited utility of democratization and transition theoretical approaches, the work underscores the persistence and durability of authoritarianism. Chapter two details the politicized institutional divergence between Egypt and Syria that began in the 1970s. Chapter three and four examines how institutional politicization or de-politicization affects elite and non-elite individual co-optation in Egypt and Syria. Chapter five discusses the study’s general conclusions and theoretical implications. This thesis’s argument is that Egypt and Syria co-opt elites and non-elites differently because of the varying degrees of institutional politicization in each governance system. Rather than view one country as more politically developed than the other, this work argues that Syria’s political institutions are more politicized than their Egyptian counterparts. Syria’s political arena is, thus, described as politicized-patrimonialism. Syria’s politicized-patrimonial arena produces uneven co-optation of elites and non-elites as they are diffused through competing institutions. Conversely, the Egyptian political arena remains highly personalized as weak institutions and individuals are manipulated and molded according to the president’s ruling clique. This is referred to as personalized-patrimonialism. As a consequence, Egypt’s political establishment demonstrates more flexibility in ad hoc altering and adapting its arena depending on the emergence of crises. This study’s theoretical implications suggest that, contrary to modernization and democratization theory’s adage that institutions lead to a political development, politicized institutions within a patrimonial order actually hinder regime adaptation because consensus is harder to achieve and maintain. It is within this context that Egypt’s de-politicized institutional framework advantages its top political elite. In this reading of Egyptian and Syrian politics, Egypt’s personalized political arena is more adaptable than Syria’s. These conclusions do not indicate that political reform is a process underway in either state
