Retradução comentada de Corinne ou l'Italie de Mme de Staël

No primeiro capítulo, descrevem-se a vida e as obras da autora, com ênfase para Corinne ou l'Italie, que foi traduzida e retraduzida em outras línguas, principalmente o inglês, italiano e alemão. Em seguida, no capítulo 2, apresenta-se a primeira tradução para o português do Brasil Corina ou a Itália (1945, Edições Cultura). Como terceira etapa, comenta-se a retradução com base nas reflexões teóricas de Berman, Pym, Venuti, Gambier. Apresentam-se exemplos dos aspectos semânticos, culturais, estilísticos presentes ao longo dos XX livros, a partir do original e da retradução. Os comentários do processo de tradução permitem uma frutífera troca literária e cultural e a tradução, o estudo e conhecimento da obra de Madame de Staël, por consequência, enriquecem o cânone da literatura francesa traduzida no Brasil.Abstract : This thesis, linked to the research field "Theory, criticism and history of translation" attempts to do a commented retranslation of Mme de Staël's Corinne ou l'Italie (1807). The first chapter describes the life and the works of the author, with emphasis on Corinne ou l'Italie, which was translated and retranslated into other languages, mainly English, Italian and German. In Chapter 2, the first translation of Corinne ou l'Italie into Brazilina Portuguese (1945, Cultura Printings) is presented. In chapter 3 the retranslation is analyzed through comments based on theoretical reflections of Berman, Pym, Venuti and Gambier. Examples of semantic, cultural and stylistics aspects of the XX books (original and retranslated version) are presented. The comments of the translation process allow a rich literary and cultural exchange. As well as a deeper investigation about Madame de Staël's work enriches the standard of French literature in Brazil

The virtue of industry and the instrumentalization of work
No full textThis paper explores the development of changing conceptions of the virtue of industry between the medieval and early modern periods of Western Europe. The distinctive contribution of this paper is to show how a teleological concept of industry, where work is seen as perfective of both the individual and the community, was eventually supplanted by an externalized concept of industry that consists essentially in engaging in economically measurable and productive activities. The virtue of industry appears in both medieval and early modern discussions of work and character. One finds the virtue of industry mentioned as an antidote to the vice of sloth in monastic writings, sermons, and ethical treatises in medieval Western Europe. In the medieval understanding, the vice of sloth consists in the avoidance of purposive activities such as works of charity or prayerful contemplation. The virtue of industry is also found in the writings of a more modern figure such as Benjamin Franklin; but for Franklin, this virtue is primarily oriented toward outwardly visible activities that yield economically valuable goods. In this paper, I show how developments in the understanding of the virtue of industry contribute to a transition in seeing work as an intrinsically valuable activity that is perfective of the individual and the community to seeing work primarily as a practical and instrumentally valuable activity that consists in the production of commodifiable goods. The benefits of a 4WD architecture are presented along with the tools for further optimization and understanding. The goal is to provide real, actionable information to teams deciding to pursue 4WD vehicles and quantify the results of difficult engineering trade-offs. Analytical bicycle models are used to discuss the effect of the Center of Gravity location on vehicle performance, and Acceleration-Velocity Phase Space (AVPS) is introduced as a useful tool for optimization. No full textPhDRobert Buchanan was widely regarded during his
lifetime as a poet of distinction, a capable and powerful
novelist, and a critic of some perception, yet his name is
now associated only with one regrettable episode, while
those of lesser men and women continue to be remembered for
work inferior to his. A man possessing large reserves of
energy, and pressed to write for a living at an early age,
he produced much work that deserves the oblivion it has
found; but his early verse, expressing his profound compassion
for the sufferings of the unfortunate in the simplest
language, some of his ballads, and not a little of his
later more vatic verse, is still worthy of study. As a
novelist his work is provocative and readable, but too
often descends to the level of the sentimental melodrama
which earned him, for a while, a very good income from the
stage. As a critic he was not profound, but was quick to
detect and praise expression of his own sympathy for humanity
that came to represent for him art's highest aspiration;
Dickens, Browning and Whitman were his heroes, and for the
last two he did sterling work in helping them to gain widespread
recognition. As a polemist he rushed into several
arenas, for some of which his talents were not especially
suited; but he publicly supported C. S. Parnell and Oscar
Wilde when few found the courage to do so. An interesting
man of impressive variety and undoubted talent has found an
undeserved neglect, and a full-scale critical biography of
Robert Buchanan is long overdue

No full textAbstract Background Worksites are important locations for interventions to promote health. However, occupational programs with documented efficacy often are not used, and those being implemented have not been studied. The research in this report was funded through the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act Challenge Topic 'Pathways for Translational Research,' to define and prioritize determinants that enable and hinder translation of evidenced-based health interventions in well-defined settings. Methods The IGNITE (investigation to guide new insights for translational effectiveness) trial is a prospective cohort study of a worksite wellness and injury reduction program from adoption to final outcomes among 12 fire departments. It will employ a mixed methods strategy to define a translational model. We will assess decision to adopt, installation, use, and outcomes (reach, individual outcomes, and economic effects) using onsite measurements, surveys, focus groups, and key informant interviews. Quantitative data will be used to define the model and conduct mediation analysis of each translational phase. Qualitative data will expand on, challenge, and confirm survey findings and allow a more thorough understanding and convergent validity by overcoming biases in qualitative and quantitative methods used alone. Discussion Findings will inform worksite wellness in fire departments. The resultant prioritized influences and model of effective translation can be validated and manipulated in these and other settings to more efficiently move science to service.</p

Vita.Includes bibliographical references (p. 80-91).Commercial human spaceflight looks ready to take off as an industry, with "space tourism" as its first application. Paying passengers are likely to begin taking suborbital spaceflights within the next several years, both despite and because of the risks and hazards inherent in human spaceflight. As this activity poses dangers to passengers, there will be an increasing degree of government regulation and oversight to protect participant safety. Though human spaceflight is not a new endeavour, commercial human spaceflight poses a new set of challenges for regulators to grapple with. As is the case with many emerging technological industries, the regulatory challenge is to protect the safety of both participants and the uninvolved without regulating to a degree that stifles industry innovation and growth. This thesis examines the history and regulation of commercial human spaceflight to date. The technical background, systems engineering, and risk management of human spaceflight are explored, to determine which particular subsystem-mission phase combinations warrant closer regulatory attention.
