Etude du potentiel de l'expérience LHCb pour la découverte de physique au-delà du Modèle standard dans la désintégration
The Standard Model predicts the same time-dependant CP asymmetry in both Bd0 -> J/Psi KS0 and Bd0 -> Phi KS0 decays. This asymmetry is proportional to sin(2 beta). Any difference between the CP asymmetries measured in these 2 channels would indicate the presence of new phenomena beyond the Standard Model. We study the sensitivity of the LHCb experiment to this effect. To that end, we estimate the statistical error on the measurement of sin(2 beta) in the Bd0 -> Phi KS0 channel by LHCb. We do that with the LHCb classic detector, and then with the reoptimized detector. The number of simulated background events is too small with respect to the annual statistics to obtain precise evaluations. We developped several methods to improve these evaluations. In the most optimistic case, we predict that sin(2 beta) would be measured in the LHCb classic configuration with a statistical error equal to 0.56.
On the potential of multivariate techniques for the determination of multidimensional efficiencies
International audienceDifferential measurements of particle collisions or decays can provide stringent constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. In particular, the distributions of the kinematical and angular variables that characterise heavy meson multibody decays are non-trivial and can be used to probe this new physics. In the era of high luminosity opened by the advent of the Large Hadron Collider and of Flavor Factories, differential measurements are less and less dominated by statistical precision and require a precise determination of efficiencies that depend simultaneously on several variables and do not factorise in these variables. This article is a reflection on the potential of multivariate techniques for the determination of such multidimensional efficiencies. We carried out two case studies showing that multivariate techniques, such as neural networks, can determine and correct for the distortions introduced by reconstruction and selection criteria in the multidimensional phase space of the decays and , at the price of a minimal analysis effort. We conclude that this method can already be used for measurements which statistical precision does not yet reach the percent level. With more sophisticated machine learning methods, the aforementioned potential is very promising
Rapa Nui (Easter Island)’s Stone Worlds
This article explores the spatial, architectural and conceptual relationships between landscape places, stone quarrying, and stone moving and building during Rapa Nui’s statue-building period. These are central themes of the ‘Rapa Nui Landscapes of Construction Project’ and are discussed using aspects of the findings of our recent fieldwork. The different scales of expression, from the detail of the domestic sphere to the monumental working of quarries, are considered. It is suggested that the impressiveness of Rapa Nui’s stone architecture is its conceptual coherence at the small scale as much as at the large scale. </div
The small city quality of place reporting system project: Guiding principles and implementation guidelines
Urban Canada is overwhelmingly understood – by the media, by much of the public, and by policy makers – as comprised of a tier of large cities. As a result, the instruments for measuring quality of life in urban areas are calibrated to assess metropolitan factors, not those arising in cities with populations of fewer than 100,000. The objective of this paper is to propose the first generation of a quality of life indicator system and toolkit responding to the distinctive needs, limitations, and varied realities of small towns and small cities
