Oral History Interview: Mark E. Lefebvre (1415)
In his March 2015 interview with Harv Thompson et al, Mark Lefebvre reflects on his long involvement with the arts in Wisconsin, and specifically Robert Gard's contribution to his development and Wisconsin rural arts. He discussed his youth in northeastern Wisconsin and the influence UW-Extension and his undergraduate career at UW-Madison had in his development as an author and publisher. He related his work with Gard and shared reminiscences about a number of major figures in UW's arts heritage. Finally, he discussed his more recent work with medical education. This interview was conducted for inclusion into the UW-Madison Oral History Program and the Gard Foundation's UW-Madison and WI Community Arts History Project
Henri Lefebvre, Space and Folklore
The complex spatial thinking of Henri Lefebvre and its implications for folkloristics are explored in the context of a fictitious conversation between him and the author as they walk around a small farm in southeastern British Columbia. Aspects of Lefebvre’s position are explored and illustrated using examples from this setting, such as fences and campfire pits. Lefebvre’s tripartite schema for conceptualizing space is articulated during this conversation, foregrounding the importance of the oft-occluded espace vécu (lived space). Viewing this as a dialogic, embodied, open-ended domain of space is shown to be a highly generative and potentially transformative approach to understanding space — an approach which has numerous implications for the study of cultural tradition

This paper aims to address, in a broad manner, another interpretative framework for the standardized concept of urban in the work of Henri Lefebvre. It is, mainly, an effort to finding methodological elements used by the author that explain the intention behind this concept. My interest, then, is to conduct a research on the definition of urban by Lefebvre, in order to contribute to the understanding of this important philosopher’s thought. The concept of urban has been the main topic of debates and controversies regarding Lefebvre’s perspective, as it is evoked by the author in a broad sense – rather than in interpretative closure. The argument developed is that the conceptual arsenal of the author is similar to Adorno’s Dialectics, thus acknowledging the non-concept status of how Lefebvre makes use of the signifier “urban”.

Often, Henri Lefebvre\u27s work is either perceived as an extension that clarifies Marx\u27s thought or as a gateway to the understanding of dialectic, however this way is full of pitfalls. The treatment of the Lefebvrian dialectic as an immediate continuity and a rigorous application of what was already inscribed in Marx\u27s work is one of them. The usual identification of Lefebvre\u27s triads with the triadic structure of the Hegelian dialectic is another. In this sense, this article seeks to present aspects of the morphology and structure of Henri Lefebvre\u27s dialectic thinking, emphasizing the radical specificity of the way the author reworks the material inherited by him aiming to compose some of new basis of the contemporary critical thinking
Henri Lefebvre, "Metaphilosophy." Trans. David Pernbach.
This may be a difficult book for some philosophers to read, in a number of ways. First and foremost, it is written by someone who orbits and even penetrates the discipline of philosophy in a professional capacity, yet he is calling for its end. More precisely, its author, Henri Lefebvre (1901-1991), is saying stop whatever philosophy you’re currently doing. On the one hand, this is a clarion call to philosophers around the world to take philosophy to its limits and beyond. On the other hand, it offers a bleak take on the contemporary relevance of philosophical inquiry. To Lefebvre, much of philosophy is moribund and has been so for some time. That is, of course, if it is not already dead. Lefebvre identifies eleven aporia that he deems to be at the heart of philosophy’s withering away, all of which detail the
contradiction of the gap between the real and the idea; everyday life and the privileged position of the
philosopher. In a way, it could even be seen as anti-philosophy. Regardless of where it stands on any
philosophical purity spectrum, it is above all inspired by Marx’s famous theses on Feuerbach, specifically the eleventh thesis: ‘Philosophers have only interpreted the world; the point, however, is to change it.’ Lefebvre is, essentially, saying that the world cannot change if philosophy does not change, and the world ought to change.Book revie
