Transglutaminase Type 2 is Involved in the Hematopoietic Stem Cells Homeostasis

    No full text
Type 2 transglutaminase (TG2) is a multifunctional protein involved in various biological processes playing a key regulatory role in cell homeostasis such as cell death and autophagy. New evidence is emerging that support an important role of autophagy in regulating normal hematopoiesis. Prompted by these findings, in this study we investigated in vivo involvement of TG2 in mouse hematopoiesis under normal or nutrient deprivation conditions. We found that the number and rate of differentiation of bone marrow hematopoietic stem cell was decreased in the TG2 knockout mice. We present evidence showing that these effects on hematopoietic system are very likely due to the TG2-dependent impairment of autophagy. In fact, stimulation of autophagy by starvation is able to rescue the block of the differentiation of stem cells progenitors in the TG2 KO mice. It was also shown that the RhoA/ERK1/2 pathway, known to be essential for regulation of the bone marrow progenitor cells homeostasis, was significantly impaired in the absence of TG2. Hence, this study expanded our knowledge about TG2 discovering a role of this enzyme in regulation of hematopoiesis

Eléments pour une étude des représentations de la canne à sucre chez les Ankave-Anga (PNG)

    No full text
National audienceIn the set of representations the Ankave have elaborated concerning food and nurturing, sugar cane seems unambiguously associated with maternal milk. Yet, the ways sugar cane is consumed during male initiations point to a more complex situation, which the author analyzes in this particular ethnographic context as well as with respect to what is known of the connections other Angans make between bodily substances and several foods.

Tension in the Natural History of Human Thinking

Michael Tomasello has greatly expanded our knowledge of human cognition and how it differs from that of other animals. In this commentary to his recent book A Natural History of Human Thinking, I first critique some of the presuppositions and arguments of his evolutionary story about how homo sapiens’ cognition emerged. For example, I question the strategy of relying on the modern chimpanzee as a model for our last shared ancestor, and I doubt the idea that what changed first over evolutionary time was hominin behavior, which then in turn brought about changes in cognition. In the second half of the commentary I aim to show that the author oscillates between an additive and a transformative account of human shared intentionality. I argue that shared intentionality shapes cognition in its entirety and therefore precludes the possibility that humans have the same, individual intentionality (as shown in, e.g. their instrumental reasoning) as other apes

Molophilus (Molophilus) pleuralis de Meijere, 1920 Figures 24, 25 Molophilus pleuralis de Meijere, 1920: 60 (description), Pl. 4, Figs 53 a–b (male terminalia). Type material examined. The species was described from an unspecified number of specimens from “Amsterdam, Diemen, Haarlem, Abcoude, Hilversum, Uitgeest, Leimuiden, Zwammerdam” (de Meijere 1920: 60). Altogether 32 syntypes (25 3, 5 Ƥ, 2 specimens without abdomen) are now deposited in ZMAN, and one male syntype in ZMHB (de Jong 2000: 170–171). I have examined four male syntypes from ZMAN, all belonging to M. (M.) pleuralis, including one labelled (but not published) as lectotype by Br. Theowald. The latter is here designated accordingly. Lectotype 3 (by present designation): Netherlands, Amsterdam, 11.v. 1919 (J.C.H. de Meijere leg.) (ZMAN), labelled “Amsterdam / 11.V. 19 / de Meijere” (partly printed, date handwritten), a paper square with “C”, “ Lectotype / M. pleuralis / n. sp. / des. Theow.” (handwritten, red), “ Molophilus / pleuralis / de Meijere, 1920 / ZMAN type DIPT.0671.22” (printed, red). Labelled as lectotype by the present author (“ LECTOTYPE / Molophilus / pleuralis de Meijere 3 / J. Starý 2010 ”; printed red label). The specimen is micro-pinned on a piece of foam, with only left fore and mid legs attached; apex of abdomen cut off. Terminalia mounted by de Meijere in Canada balsam on a celluloid slide, pinned with the specimen. Paralectotypes: Netherlands: Diemen, 3.viii. 1918, 1 3; Uitgeest, 1.viii. 1918, 1 3; Haarlem, ± 18.viii. 1919, 1 3 (all J.C.H. de Meijere leg.) (all ZMAN). All specimens have red paratype labels and labels with numbers “0671.17”, “0671.12”, and “0671.25”, respectively. All specimens subsequently labelled as paralectotypes by the present author. The lectotype is designated here to stabilize the concept of the name with respect to M. (M.) brevifurcatus sp. n. Other material examined (9 3, 1 Ƥ): Greece: Pieria Region: Eginio env., Aliakmonas delta, cut-off meander, 4.vi. 2007, 1 3 (J. Starý leg.) (JSO). Crete: Khania Region: Kavros, 19.v. 2004, 1 3 (J. Roháček & M. Vála leg.); Kavros, marsh, 20.v. 2004, 6 3, 1 Ƥ; Kavros, 24.v. 2004, 1 3 (both J. Starý leg.) (all JSO). Distribution. Widely distributed in the Palaearctic: Europe, including Cyprus; Turkey, Transcaucasia, Israel, Iran, Middle Asia, Russia as far as Far East. First records for Greece (incl. Crete).Published as part of Starý, Jaroslav, 2011, Descriptions and records of the Palaearctic Molophilus Curtis (Diptera, Limoniidae), pp. 45-62 in Zootaxa 2999 on pages 55-56, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20328

Catheter fracture and migration into the coronary sinus-an unusual migration site: case report and review

    No full text
Catheter fracture and cardiac migration are rare but known complications. Most reported cases have developed between the clavicle and the first rib as a consequence of catheter pinching between these two bony structures. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of catheter migration into the coronary sinus. The broken fragment was successfully retrieved using loop-snare technique. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. Gérer le passé pour façonner l’avenir à Wëté et Drueulu

    No full text
This article proposes an interlacing of the ethnographic experiences of two researchers working in two different field sites, one in the north of the Grande Terre (Wëté), the other in Lifou (Drueulu), with the aim of better understanding how, in this pre-referendum historic moment, Kanak men and women refer to their own past and redefine it. Each author presents his/her respective analysis, which results from this dialogue. The text highlights an increased desire on the part of the Kanak people to be protagonists in redeploying and valorizing elements of their own societies in the face of the challenges of the future. The historic moment of the 2018 referendum is not only unfolding around political issues, it also entails a vision that makes the idea of a sustainable society rooted in Kanak cultural elements a central concern

The Serum Levels of Endothelium Nitric Oxide Synthase in Positive Cases for Helicobacter pylori Stool Antigen

    No full text
Background & Objectives: Endothelium nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is a type of enzyme which produces an endogenous factor called nitric oxide (NO). NO plays important role in progress of euplastic diseases. In chronic gastritis, the increased level of NO causes damages to DNA. The aim of present study is to evaluate eNOS concentration in sera of healthy people and those infected by Helicobacter pylori. Methods: The sera and stool specimens from 84 voluntaries (Female: 58.3%, Males 41.6%) were collected. Helicobacter pylori antigen in the stool specimens and eNOS levels in sera were determined using ELISA. Obtained data were analyzed using Excell software. Results: The age range was from 1 to 78 years old (Mean: 30 years old). In terms of special diseases, 70.2% did not have any special diseases, but 29.76% showed at least one special disease, mainly thyroid disease and hypertension. The results for H. pylori stool antigen detection showed that 16.6%, 29.76% and 53.57% of collected specimens were equivocal, Helicobacter pylori negative and positive respectively. Comparison of sera concentrations of eNOS showed that there is no significant change among these three groups. Conclusion: As mentioned in results, the eNOS sera concentrations showed no significant change in Helicobacter pylori positive and negative groups. Albeit the other studies showed the significant increase in serum concentration of Helicobacter pylori positive patient, this controversy may arise from race and variations in Helicobacter pylori pathogenic islands such as those containing VacA and CagA. We propose to conduct a similar study in Ardabil to focus on the pathogenic islands of H. pylori strains in this province
