Construction of Student Groups Using Belbin: Supporting Group Work in Environmental Management

    No full text
Belbin team role self and observer perceptions were applied to a large cohort (145) of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences undergraduates in a module assessed through two separate group projects. Students self-selected groups for the first project; for the second, groups were more ‘balanced.’ Results show slight improvement in group performance compared with that of previous years, with a significant increase in first-class grades. No evidence was found linking group balance to performance; however, students recognized the value of their Belbin report when entering the job market. Belbin usefully contextualizes regularly occurring group work issues and provides students with ways of managing these issues

Has the time arrived for cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in psychiatric disorders?

    No full text
Psychiatric disorders are currently classified, in the majority of cases, by clinical syndromes. However, advances over the last decade in imaging and biochemical biomarkers in several Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders anticipate the incorporation of some of these markers in the diagnostic work-up of psychiatric conditions. In particular, CSF biomarkers offer the possibility of detecting a wide range of pathophysiological processes in the CNS. Newer CSF markers can measure axonal and synaptic damage, glial activation, and oxidative stress in CNS disorders with high precision. The possibility that these markers can be applied in the differential diagnosis of common psychiatric disorders such as Schizophrenia, Major Depressive or Bipolar Disorders not only to rule out neurodegenerative diseases but also to identify specific biomarker signatures has yet to be explored. In particular, synaptic proteins in CSF could be useful as markers of synaptic and neurotransmitter transmission impairment since these are key molecular features of psychiatric conditions. In this paper we outline the current and potential applications of CSF biomarkers in psychiatric disorders

A “TEORIA DA EQUIPE” DE MEREDITH BELBIN NA PERCEPÇÃO DE GESTORES.

    No full text

PROPOSITION OF INTEGRATION METHOD OF SELF-PERCEPTION AND EXTERNAL PERCEPTION THROUGH BELBIN TEST AND JOHARI WINDOW: AN ENERGY SECTOR CASE STUDY

Organizations employ various methods to develop their business and thus achieve better results in business. One of the frequently used methods is related to the enhancement of self-knowledge of the executives. In the organizational context this self-knowledge has to do mainly with the abilities and limitations related to work. One of the methods applied in organizations to help enhance its results uses Belbin Test, the methodology of such test requires its application not only in executives but also in their peers, thus seeking to gain the insight of others in the self-knowledge increase process (Belbin, 2004). The importance of perception of others in self-knowledge process was also tackled by two other scholars, Luft and Ingham (1955), who developed the concept of the Johari Window. According to this concept, people have a blind area to themselves, but noticeable to others. The main objective of this research is to propose integration between the result of Belbin Test and Johari Window. To achieve this purpose Belbin Test will was applied in a defined public. The survey results confirmed that the Belbin test shows that outside observers demonstrate knowledge of observed that the same do not showAs organizações empregam variados métodos para desenvolver seus executivos e assim alcançar melhores resultados no negócio.

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
