A Conceptual Framework for Cross-Curricular Teaching

No full text
The Montana Mathematics Enthusiast is pleased to present a special supplemental issue this year focused on the issue of interdisciplinarity in the curriculum and classroom. This book is based on the longitudinal research carried out by Prof. Astrid Beckmann of the University of Education, Schwäbisch Gmünd- Germany, who is one of the co-founders of the Mathematics and its Connections to the Arts and Sciences international group (MACAS)

Conceptual Understanding and Mathematical Literacy Through Interdisciplinary Activities Between Mathematics and the Sciences—Findings with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology

No full text
Since the launch of the PISA study at the latest, the promotion of mathematical literacy has assumed a key role in mathematics teaching in Europe and beyond. Mathematical literacy maintains a particular focus on deductive reasoning and heuristic thinking, with top priority given to ensuring a comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts, procedures, and applications. Research demonstrates that interdisciplinarity between mathematics and the sciences can prove highly beneficial in this regard: Mathematics is not merely a tool or structuring element for the sciences, as scientific content and methods can contribute to a deeper and more well-founded understanding of mathematical terms. Modeling and experimentation, including analysis of the phenomenon, mathematization, and reflection, are beneficial interdisciplinary activities. The authors underpin this observation in their paper through findings from the fields of physics, chemistry, and biology

MACAS as a Collaboration Hub

No full text
The chapter highlights numerous projects of national and international collaborations initiated by MACAS and its networks. We provide several examples of projects realized by MACAS members with their partners in different parts of the world; this work goes far beyond symposia which also become venues for sharing findings and for discussing new plans. Curiously, the book Series Mathematics Education in the Digital Era to which our book belongs also arose from discussions during one of the MACAS Symposium. We also hope this tradition will continue with new members and new partnerships

Astrid Lindgren and the Archives

The author Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002) is for many Swedes a genuine national icon. On several occasions, when the most popular and influential Swede is to be announced, Astrid Lindgren’s name is always one of the top names. Astrid Lindgren is for the Swedes known not only as a famous author, but also as a person who spoke out on things she found wrong in the Swedish society. In the history of Swedish literature 1945 is usually regarded as a milestone and Astrid Lindgren’s book Pippi Longstocking was published and revolutionised both children’s literature and the attitude to children and their upbringing. Astrid Lindgren also worked as editor-in-chief for the publishing house Rabén & Sjögren from 1946 to 1970 and for almost a quarter of a century she was responsible for the children’s literature while at the same time she was in practise her own editor. Today, ten years after she passed away 94 years old, her remaining papers, letters and manuscripts are kept in different archives where interesting research can be carried out. There is a substantial amount of material from her rich and prolific life and in this article I wish to illustrate how this material can be used to provide a deeper knowledge of Astrid Lindgren as a person and as an editor.</p
