Teoría feminista y el agente social dócil: algunas reflexiones sobre el renacimiento islámico en Egipto

This article was originally published by Saba Mahmood in the journal Cultural Anthropology, volume 16, number 2, in 2001 with the title: «Feminist Theory, Embodiment, and the Docile Agent: Some Reflections on the Egyptian Islamic Revival». In 2008, the article was published in Spanish in a book edited by Liliana Suárez Navaz y Rosalva Aída Hérnandez Castillo in Cátedra: Descolonizando el feminismo: teorías y prácticas desde los márgenes. In the article, Saba Mahmood, who recently passed away, deals with a main debate in feminist theory: social agency. Through an analysis of the piety movement in Egypt in the 1990s and precisely of the study of five mosques in El Cairo, the author questions the consideration of social agency as a synonym of resistance to domination relations, which prevents the study of movements as the one she studies. She offers a conceptualization of agency as capacity of action that is habilitated and created inside specific historical relations of subordination.Este texto fue originalmente publicado por Saba Mahmood en la revista Cultural Anthropology en el volumen 16, número 2, del año 2001 con el título: «Feminist Theory, Embodiment, and the Docile Agent: Some Reflections on the Egyptian Islamic Revival».

Aspects of the social geography of the province of Sistan/Baluchestan, Iran

The Kordi (Kurd) tribe now living in Iranian Baluchestan would appear to be an offshoot of the far more numerous Kurdish peoples of the north-western Zagros Mountains of Iran-Iraq. The Kordi were settled in their present location possibly in the l6th Century AD, but much more likely in the l8th Century, originally to act as tax-gatherers on behalf of the Shah-in-Shah. For many years they lived as pastoralists (often nomadic), tax gatherers, guardians of the frontier, and by raiding and plunder. Their habitat, round the Kuh-e-Taftan massif (one of the more fertile areas in the extremely arid and topographically difficult region of Baluchestan) allows some agriculture; and since the 1940's especially, the Kordi people have turned increasingly to a settled way of life based on mixed farming - mostly cultivation, with some animal herding. The thesis examines the origins of the Kordi, their geographical environment, social organisation and demography; and considers present and future evolution of this people in a changed and changing Iranian State

An organizational model for intentions to adopt blockchain-based hospital information systems in Malaysian hospitals

Blockchain technology has gained considerable interest in various sectors due to its distributed ledger, decentralized nature, and cryptographic security. Despite its potential to revolutionize the healthcare industry by providing a unified and secure system for health records, blockchain adoption remains limited in developing countries including Malaysia. The current literature lacks comprehensive empirical studies investigating the factors influencing the adoption of blockchain technology in the healthcare sector. Thus, this study aims to identify the factors influencing the intention to adopt blockchain technology in Malaysian healthcare domain. A theoretical model is proposed by integrating the Fit-Viability Model (FVM), Technological-Organizational-Environmental (TOE) framework, and institutional theory (INS) to examine these factors. A quantitative approach was adopted, and data was collected through an online survey of 199 decision-makers in Malaysian hospitals. The collected data were analysed using Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis. The results indicate that trust, information transparency, disintermediation, cost-effectiveness, top management support, organizational readiness, partner readiness, technology vendor support, fit, and viability significantly and positively influence the intention to adopt blockchain-based Health Information Systems (HIS) in Malaysian hospitals. Conversely, coercive pressure from the government negatively affects the adoption decision. Moreover, the study found that hospital ownership type does not moderate the relationships between the identified factors and blockchain technology adoption. This study provides valuable insights into the various factors that influence blockchain technology adoption in public and private hospitals. The developed model offers guidelines for hospitals, blockchain technology providers, governments, and policymakers to devise strategies that promote implementation and encourage the widespread adoption of blockchain technology in Malaysian healthcare organizations

Single-Phase Crossflow Mixing in a Vertical Tube Bundle Geometry: An Experimental Study

    No full text
The vertical rod/tube bundle geometry has a wide variety of industrial applications. Typical examples are the core of light water nuclear reactors (LWR) and vertical tube steam generators. In the core of a LWR, primarily coolant flows upward but their also exist a flow in lateral direction, called crossflow, in the gaps in between the sub-channels. The radial transport of scalars and vapors (i.e., crossflow mixing) due to crossflow has an important bearing on the assessment of the probable fuel rods damage. Motivated by this safety aspect of a LWR, the aim of the present study is to enhance the current understanding of crossflow mixing in a vertical tube and to develop a mixing model. An experimental study, supported by a few numerical simulations, was performed to identify different fluid flow patterns in a vertical tube bundle/similar geometry and the contribution of these patterns towards the lateral inter channel transport of a passive scalar. The experiments were performed in water at isothermal, single-phase flow and ambient operating conditions for Reynolds numbers ranging from approximately 900 to 22,000. The experimental results show the existence of counter rotating coherent vortices adjacent to the channel-gap interface for all flow regimes, i.e., laminar, transitional and turbulent flows. These coherent vortices are identified as a major contributor towards the crossflow. Experiments on the radial mixing of a passive scalar induced by crossflow show that the coherent structures impart a significant contribution towards crossflow mixing for all Reynolds numbers. Based on the experimental results a continuous stirred tank (CST) based crossflow mixing model has been proposed for the full range of channel Reynolds numbers. The model predictions are found to be within a band of ±20% of the experimental values for the full range of channel Reynolds numbers.Radiation, Radionuclides & ReactorsApplied Science

Includes bibliographical references. This work describes the development of an integrated sensors system to measure concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, glucose, and lactate concurrently at single cell level. DO was measured amperometrically using a three-electrode system of working (WE), counter (CE) and reference (RE) electrodes. pH was measured potentiometrically using two electrodes system of Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) WE and Ag/AgCl RE. Glucose and lactate were measured enzymatically by measuring the current generated from the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide generated from the catalysis of glucose or lactate at the WEs with their catalysis enzymes. A microfluidic chamber containing all four sensors was made using SU8 to investigate single oocytes/embryos immersed in up to 120 µL of respiration buffer. This work includes the results of using the integrated sensors system to measure the metabolic activities of real cells including single oocytes or embryos. The micro-chamber was completely sealed using top layer of ovoil and covered by top glass lid to avoid oxygen exchange between the inside of the chamber and the atmosphere, while being maintained at a temperature of 38.5 ºC to preserve cell viability. The oxygen consumption of cells, the lactate production and glucose consumptions were measured as a change in output current and converted to femto-mol (fmol) per second based on calibrations with buffer of known DO, lactate, and lactate concentrations. This integrated sensor system has some potential applications include evaluating effects of metabolic therapies on oocyte bioenergetics, study the effect of aging on embryos development and monitoring mitochondrial function throughout oocyte maturation and blastocyst development to predict embryo viability to compliment assisted reproductive technologies.Undergraduate Choice - Research Top Scholar

Exploring the Emergence of Open Spatial Data Infrastructures: Analysis of Recent Developments and Trends in Europe

    No full text
In the past 20 years, European public authorities have invested considerable resources in the development of spatial data infrastructures. With the European INSPIRE Directive as an important driver, national spatial data infrastructures were developed throughout Europe to facilitate and coordinate the exchange and sharing of geographic data. While the original focus of these spatial data infrastructure was mainly on data sharing among public authorities, it became more and more evident that these data could also be of great value to users outside the public sector. In recent years, several countries and public administrations started to make a shift towards the establishment of an ‘open’ spatial data infrastructure, in which also businesses, citizens and non- governmental actors were considered as key stakeholders of the infrastructure. This chapter provides an analysis of the measures and solutions implemented in four European countries (the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Finland) to make their spatial data infrastructures open to businesses, citizens and other stakeholders. The analysis shows that in these four countries the move towards more open spatial data infrastructures can mainly be seen in the increased availability of geographic data and spatially enabled services to citizens, businesses and other stakeholders.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.
