Gender equality, poverty eradication and the Millennium Development Goals: promoting women's capabilities and participation
This publication is based on a keynote presentation by Professor Naila Kabeer, from the Institute of Development Studies, Sussex to the first session of UNESCAP’s Committee on Emerging Social Issues, Bangkok, 4 September 2003. The author discusses why gender analysis is relevant to all aspects of economic and the social development and more specifically to the core MDG of halving world poverty by 2015. Ms. Kabeer highlights a number of considerations that need to be explicitly integrated into gender-aware analyses and approaches to achieving the MDGs
Mainstreaming gender in social protection for the informal economy
In Mainstreaming Gender in Social Protection for the Informal Economy Naila Kabeer explores the gendered dimensions of risk, vulnerability and insecurity and hence the need for a gender perspective in the design of social protection measures. Her emphasis is on the informal economy because that is where the majority of women, and indeed the poor, are to be found while also being where official efforts for social protection are most limited. The book will enhance understanding of the constraints and barriers that confine women to more poorly remunerated, more casual and more insecure forms of waged and self-employment, and of what this implies for womens ability to provide for their families and cope with insecurity. Kabeer develops a framework of analysis that integrates gender, life course and livelihoods perspectives in order to explore the interactions between gender inequality, household poverty and labour market forces that help to produce gender-differentiated experiences of risk and vulnerability for the working poor. She then examines and assesses examples of social protection measures from child allowances to pensions in order to illustrate the necessity for a gender-analytical approach. She also stresses the importance of an organised voice for vulnerable and marginalised workers. Finally, the author synthesises the main lessons that emerge out of the discussion and identifies gaps and exclusions in the social protection agenda
An Autoethnographic Reading of Djanet Sears’s The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God
Djanet Sears’s play The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God offers a generous opportunity for the careful contemplation of the intersections between Christianity, motherhood, and blackness in Canada—a topic hitherto unexamined in scholarship about Sears’s plays. The protagonist’s search for God is a personal exploration of self in relation to each of these topics; similarly, Naila Keleta-Mae draws from the analysis of self through the article’s incorporation of methodologies employed in autobiographical performance and autoethnographic research. Specifically, the author maps her examination of Sears’s play through her own body and experiences of Christianity, motherhood, and blackness in Canada. One of the key ways that this article seeks to differ itself from traditional Canadian scholarship is by foregrounding the explicit ways the scholar’s topic of inquiry intersects with her/his/their personal lived experience. To some extent, this article is about visibility and transparency—it is an effort to make equally visible the preoccupations of the scholar in her/his/their analysis of a subject matter—in this specific case it is the unambiguous articulation of why Keleta-Mae cares about Sears’s play.
Post Pandemic Research Trends on Challenges and Outcomes in Education: A Case-study of HEC Recognized Journals of Education 2020- 2021
Objective: The purpose of the present study is to explore the research trends on challenges and outcomes of post pandemic education. The researcher has conducted a meta-analysis of HEC recognized journals of education published in post pandemic period that is 2020-2021.
Methodology: The study has adopted qualitative approach following case-study design. The population of the study is comprised of each of 2 issues of 14 journals of education recognised by higher education commission of Pakistan. The sample was selected using purposive sampling technique. The sample size was 21 articles based on the inclusion criteria which directs to select only those articles discussing the post COVID context of teaching-learning process. The data was collected through a literature review matrix which was developed to classify the articles for various themes generated after critical review. After reviewing the selected articles, different themes were generated such as Pandemic and higher education, psychological aspects of post pandemic context, learning experiences in Covid-19, remote teaching and challenges, assessment and distant learning using content analysis technique.
Findings: This content analysis revealed that COVID-19 has increased the scope of online education by showing an increasing trend of Hybrid model in education. The research has highlighted the effect of COVID-19 on teachers and learners particularly and the system of education generally. It further explored the issue related to depression and anxiety and challenges related to energy crises.
Implications: This study recommends that to overcome such issues and challenges there should be provision of professional development programs for the teachers to prepare them for future circumstances
The Role of Media in the Promotion of Divine Religions and Contemporary Communication Methods
The divine religions are concerned with the promotion of true knowledge of Allah Almighty. These religions, in their broadest sense, are spread over a wide area of the world, and with each passing day, their propagation and transmission is expanding. It has been a tradition for centuries that whether it is human beings or religions, they have needed media for the truth of their word. It is certain that the divine religions also made full use of the prevailing media of their time and succeeded in conveying their ideas and thoughts to many people. The preaching struggle of the divine religions did not span a single century but a long span of centuries, the scale of which we cannot determine at present. However, some aspects can be pointed out historically. Two important sections are highlighted in this article. The role of the media in the promotion of divine religions. The contemporary communication methods and aspects of competition between the nations of the world, especially between the Indian subcontinent and the West. In addition to the divine religions, this article also discusses the mode of communication of non-divine religions and gives a brief overview of their methods
Renegotiating Patriarchy
The idea of the ‘Bangladesh paradox’ describes the unexpected social progress that Bangladesh has made in recent decades that has been both pro-poor and gender equitable. This began at a time when the country was characterised by extreme levels of poverty, poor quality governance, an oppressive patriarchy and rising Islamic orthodoxy.
This ‘paradox’ has evoked a great deal of interest within the international development community because Bangladesh had been dubbed an ‘international basket case’ at the time of its independence in 1971, seemingly trapped in a development impasse. Previous attempts to explain this paradox have generally taken a top-down approach, focusing on the role of leading institutional actors – donors, government, NGOs and the private sector. In Renegotiating Patriarchy: Gender, Agency and the Bangladesh Paradox, Naila Kabeer starts with the rationale that policy actions taken at the top are unlikely to materialise into actual changes if they are not acted on by the mass of ordinary women and men. But what led these women and men to act? And why did they act in ways that modified some of the more oppressive aspects of patriarchy in the country? That is what this book sets out to investigate.
It describes the history of the Bengal delta, and the forces that gave rise to the kind of society that Bangladesh was at the time of its independence. It considers the policy and politics that characterised post-independence Bangladesh and how these contributed to the progress captured in the idea of the Bangladesh paradox.
But the key argument of the book is that much of this progress reflected the agency exercised by ordinary, often very poor, women in the course of their everyday lives. Their agency helped to translate institutional actions into concrete changes on the ground. To explore why and how this happened, the book draws on a rich body of ethnographic, qualitative and quantitative research on social change in Bangladesh – including studies by the author herself. The book is therefore about how norms and practices can change in progressive ways despite unpropitious circumstances as a result of the efforts of poor women in Bangladesh to renegotiate what had been described as one of the most non-negotiable patriarchies in the world
Disidentification: queer ways of identifying with cajke
This work presents the results of qualitative research on the ways of how queer people identify with cajke. The first part is devoted to the breakdown of the terms queer and cajke, and a detailed analysis of the literature on turbofolk, where the author tried to present the key works that connect turbofolk with the terms Balkan, gender and queer. The second part is dedicated to the different meanings of the word queer, the development of its use in the English language, how it settled into the Croatian language, and a sketch of the field of queer studies. The third part presents the results of the author’s own research that she conducted with nine queer people from Zagreb. The notion of disidentification has appeared as central in explaining the queer ways of identifying with cajke through camp sensibility and the concepts of entertainment and the Balkans
