    Un codice ritrovato. In margine al Ms. 16 (10) della Basilica di San Nicola di Bari

    Considerazioni sulle intricate vicende che hanno portato al ritrovamento, dopo più di trent'anni, di un prezioso Evangeliario miniato sottratto al Tesoro della Basilica di San Nicola di Bari. Sulla base di elementi di analisi codicologica, paleografica, testuale, ornamentale, si offrono spunti per una datazione e localizzazione del manoscritto; inoltre, grazie al puntuale raffronto con un Epistolario conservato nello stesso archivio, di sicura provenienza francese e dalle caratteristiche estrinseche ed intrinseche assai simili al Ms. 16, si tenta di verificare l'appartenenza di quest'ultimo al gruppo di manoscritti con liturgia "ad usum Parisiensem" donati nel 1296 da Carlo II d'Angiò alla Basilica

    The cult of St Nicholas in medieval Italy

    No full text
    St Nicholas was one of the most popular saints in medieval Italy. His cult attracted the attention of popes, kings and emperors, and his shrine at Bari became an important international pilgrimage destination. This thesis asks how the cult of St Nicholas came to be so widespread and popular in Italy, and why the saint attracted the attention of diverse groups and individuals. This thesis is structured around four chapters. The first demonstrates that through a process of Latinisation the cult of St Nicholas became integrated within Italian literary traditions and within a new spiritual era. Chapter Two reveals that this Latinisation also occurred within the saint’s iconography. Chapters Three and Four are case studies of the cult in Puglia and Venice, locations which claimed possession of the saint’s relics. These case studies show that the general developments that the cult of St Nicholas underwent in Italy, identified in Chapters One and Two, did not apply universally. Instead, the presence of the saint’s relics resulted in a different profile of the saint in Bari and Venice. Through the process of Latinisation, the cult of St Nicholas became updated and remained relevant for its new Italian audience; Chapters Three and Four show alternative ways that the cult of St Nicholas gained widespread popularity. This thesis presents for the first time an iconographical study of St Nicholas in Italian art, which develops existing research of the saint’s Byzantine iconography. Chapter Four presents a profile of the cult of St Nicholas in Venice in the Middle Ages, which is a significant oversight in the literature. The thesis uses a variety of visual and textual sources, in particular fresco and altarpiece representations, archival documents from Venice and Rome (including the Apostolic Visitations), and under-exploited contemporary and antiquarian Venetian sources

    Measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B0 -> J/ψ KS0 decays

    No full text
    This Letter reports a measurement of the CP violation observables SJ/ψK0S and CJ/ψK0S in the decay channel B0→J/ψK0S performed with 1.0 fb−1 of pp collisions at s√=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The fit to the data yields SJ/ψK0S=0.73±0.07(stat)±0.04(syst) and CJ/ψK0S=0.03±0.09(stat)±0.01(syst). Both values are consistent with the current world averages and within expectations from the Standard Model

    Measurement of the D+/- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions

    No full text
    The asymmetry in the production cross-section \sigma of D+/- mesons, A_P = (\sigma(D+) - \sigma(D-))/(\sigma(D+) + \sigma(D-)), is measured in bins of pseudorapidity \eta and transverse momentum p_T within the acceptance of the LHCb detector. The result is obtained with a sample of D+ -> K_S pi+ decays corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1, collected in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on \eta or p_T is observed

    Melatonergic drugs in development

    Alessia Carocci,1 Alessia Catalano,1 Maria Stefania Sinicropi2 1Department of Pharmacy–Drug Sciences, University of Bari Aldo Moro, Bari, 2Department of Pharmacy, Health and Nutritional Sciences, University of Calabria, Cosenza, Italy Abstract: Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is widely known as "the darkness hormone". It is a major chronobiological regulator involved in circadian phasing and sleep-wake cycle in humans. Numerous other functions, including cyto/neuroprotection, immune modulation, and energy metabolism have been ascribed to melatonin. A variety of studies have revealed a role for melatonin and its receptors in different pathophysiological conditions. However, the suitability of melatonin as a drug is limited because of its short half-life, poor oral bioavailability, and ubiquitous action. Due to the therapeutic potential of melatonin in a wide variety of clinical conditions, the development of new agents able to interact selectively with melatonin receptors has become an area of great interest during the last decade. Therefore, the field of melatonergic receptor agonists comprises a great number of structurally different chemical entities, which range from indolic to nonindolic compounds. Melatonergic agonists are suitable for sleep disturbances, neuropsychiatric disorders related to circadian dysphasing, and metabolic diseases associated with insulin resistance. The results of preclinical studies on animal models show that melatonin receptor agonists can be considered promising agents for the treatment of central nervous system-related pathologies. An overview of recent advances in the field of investigational melatonergic drugs will be presented in this review. Keywords: MT1/MT2 ligands, circadian rhythms, melatonin&nbsp

    Cold dark matter from heavy right-handed neutrino mixing

    No full text
    We show that, within the see-saw mechanism, an almost decoupled RH neutrino species NDM with mass MDM >~ 100 GeV can play the role of Dark Matter (DM). The NDM's can be produced from non-adiabatic conversions of thermalized (source) RH neutrinos with mass MS lower than MDM. This is possible if a non-renormalizable operator is added to the minimal type I see-saw lagrangian. The observed DM abundance can be reproduced for MDM Δ1/4 ~ 10-13 Λeff ξ, where Λeff is a very high energy new physics scale, δ ≡ (MDM - MS)/MDM and ξ <~ 1 is a parameter determined by the RH neutrino couplings

    Archeologia del vetro a Bari: dallo scavo allo studio archeometrico

    No full text
    Lo studio dei reperti in vetro provenienti dalle indagini archeologiche condotte a Bari a partire dalla fine degli anni Ottanta e tuttora in corso, riguardanti in particolare l’area della Cittadella nicolaiana, ha consentito di tracciare un repertorio inedito delle presenze di questo tipo di manufatti nella città a partire dalla prima età imperiale fino al Medioevo. L’analisi tipologica e archeometrica dei materiali, effettuata tramite LA-ICP-MS sui reperti riferibili all’età bizantina (IX-XI secolo), ha permesso inoltre di verificare le connessioni commerciali tra la città, in questo periodo sede del Catapanato d’Italia, e le regioni orientali del Mediterraneo. In particolare, tra i reperti del praetorium barese si segnalano importazioni di alto livello dall’area egiziana, allora sotto il controllo abbasside, il contatto diretto con il centro dell’impero, l’Asia Minore, e gli unici esemplari di vetro a ceneri sodiche, attestati in sud-italia prima del XII secolo
