    No full text
A midwifery model of woman-centred childbirth care – In Swedish and Icelandic settings”. Tiedonkeruuaineistoa on analysoitu laadullisen sisältöanalyysin avulla. Teoreettisena lähtökohtana on toiminut Berg, Ólafsdóttir ja Lundgrenin teorettinen malli ”A midwifery model of woman-centred childbirth care – In Swedish and Icelandic settings”. He tunsivat itsensä itsenäisiksi ja voimaantuneiksi sekä he uskalsivat luottaa omaan kykyynsä synnyttää. The aim of this thesis is to describe women’s experiences of waterbirth and how the support person and midwife’s acting was experienced during childbirth. The study is done to increase the midwife’s understanding of women’s experiences during a waterbirth. The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach, through semi-structed personal interviews as a data collection method. Ten informants participated in the study, both primipara and multipara. The waterbirths have taken place at home or delivery units around Finland. The data collection material has been analyzed using a qualitative content analysis. The theoretical starting point was Berg, Ólafsdóttir and Lundgren’s teoretical model ”A midwifery model of woman-centred childbirth care – In Swedish and Icelandic settings”. The results show that the women had many positive experiences of waterbirth. They felt independent, strengthened and dared to trust their own ability to give birth. The water gave relaxation, pain relief and a sense of security. The mothers agree that the strongest experience was receiving and raising their own child out of the water. Several of the informants described the birth as a dream birth. The most important tasks of the support person and the midwife during childbirth were accessibility and presence. The women experienced waterbirth as more homelike and less clinical, a natural alternative that they recommend to others

Application of Particle Swarm Optimization to Formative E-Assessment in Project Management

    No full text
The current paper describes the application of Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm to the formative e-assessment problem in project management. The proposed approach resolves the issue of personalization, by taking into account, when selecting the item tests in an e-assessment, the following elements: the ability level of the user, the targeted difficulty of the test and the learning objectives, represented by project management concepts which have to be checked. The e-assessment tool in which the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm is integrated is also presented. Experimental results and comparison with other algorithms used in item tests selection prove the suitability of the proposed approach to the formative e-assessment domain. The study is presented in the framework of other evolutionary and genetic algorithms applied in e-education.Particle Swarm Optimization, Genetic Algorithms, Evolutionary Algorithms, Formative E-assessment, E-education

    Transmedial Reading

    No full text
This chapter explores the category of transmedial reading, referring to reading experiences that go beyond a single text and are related to bigger fictional universes. Through an empirical reading case of a comic book, it argues that reading in transmedial environments is always multiple. Readers interpret the text in relation to a whole ecology of related media products set in the same fictional world. How does the new text fit the worldness that readers have built up through years of engagement? What kinds of relations are established, and how is the reader’s own affect activated in relation to a set of personal memories? The chapter proposes a transmedial reading interview method based on the author´s own theoretical framework. This chapter explores the category of transmedial reading, referring to reading experiences that go beyond a single text and are related to bigger fictional universes. I must pause here for cheering: Transtextuality and Possible Worlds Theory Applied to The Death Gate Cycle

    No full text
In this thesis, I examine how authors Weis and Hickman approach transtextuality and possible worlds narrative in order to comment on the genre of fantasy and on 1990s American social anxieties in their fantasy dystopian series The Death Gate Cycle. It is a close reading genre study of all seven novels in the aforementioned series which I analyze using Gérard Genette’s theory of transtextuality and Marie-Laure Ryan’s theory of possible worlds. I analyze how hypertextuality and intertextuality are present in the series and how these support the series’ narrative, genre commentary, and social commentary. Then I analyze how the social commentary is woven into the intertextuality and the dystopian storytelling, as well as how it connects to the context of 1990s America. I also go into the epitext surrounding the authors, such as author interviews, to solidify my analysis on these points. Finally, I briefly comment on the reception that the series has had on its readers to close up the examination of the reader effects of said use of intertextuality and dystopian elements. The Death Gate Cycle did some extraordinary things with intertextuality and with a fantastical dystopian possible worlds narrative. It uses these to comment on religion, racism, slavery, industrialism, unionizing, science, war, and climate change from a 1990s American point of view. The series also uses these as a genre commentary by subverting the typical expectations for a Tolkienesque fantasy epic and turning it dystopian. But The Death Gate Cycle is more a product of its culture, rather than having had any great influence or impact upon it. It was not the next The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, in that it did not change public perception of fantasy literature in any way. It is considered by fans to be an underrated fantasy series—an obscure 1990s gem in an oversaturated market that pumps out fantasy series after fantasy series

Taxation of financial assets in developing countries

    No full text
In developing countries, most financial assets in formal markets are deposits at financial institutions. This potentially important tax base could be taxed at a low administrative cost. When revenues of financial taxes are significant, implicit taxes dwarf explicit taxes. The author focuses on the implicit taxation of financial assets through seigniorage, reserve requirements, lending targets, and interest ceilings combined with inflation. The last instrument has often been overlooked, but it has generated more than a third of implicit revenues in some cases by lowering the cost of government borrowing. Tax revenues are difficult to measure because of regulations that prevent the use of market prices for computation and distort the meaning of some definitions. For some countries, the standard method of seigniorage grossly underestimates the revenue from financial taxation. The author discusses various sources of distortion but ignores potential impacts on the level of saving and the growth rate. Although taxes on financial assets have a low administrative cost, the excess burden that stems from the misallocation of resources is probably a much higher fraction of revenues than that of other taxes.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Public Sector Economics&Finance,Municipal Financial Management

The 'true use of reading' : Sarah Fielding and mid eighteenth-century literary strategies.

    No full text
PhDThe aim of this thesis is to explore, by examining her life and works, how Sarah Fielding (1710-68) established her identity as an author. The definition of her role involves her notions of the functions of writing and reading. Sarah Fielding attempts to invite readers to form a sense of ties by tacit understanding of her messages. As she believes that a work of literature is produced through collaboration between the writer and the reader, it is an important task in her view to show her attentiveness toward reading practice. In her consideration of reading, she has two distinct, even opposite views of her audience: on the one hand a familiar and limited circle of readers with shared moral and cultural values and on the other potential readers among the unknown mass of people. The dual targets direct her to devise various strategies. She tries to appeal to those who can endorse and appreciate her moral values as well as her learning. Her writings and letters testify that she is sensitive to the demands of the literary market, trying to lead the taste of readers by inventing new forms. The thesis opens with an overview of Sarah Fielding's career, followed by a consideration of her critical attention to the roles of reading. I go on to examine the narrative structures and strategies she deploys, with a particular emphasis on her use of the epistolary method. The following chapter deals with her attention to the reading of the moral message tangibly embodied in her educational writing. It is followed by an analysis of the activity which earned her a reputation as a learned woman. Various as the forms of her works are, they invariably reflect her attempt to balance herself between the two demands of inventiveness and familiarity

Which algorithm to select in sports timetabling?

    No full text
Any sports competition needs a timetable, specifying when and where teams meet each other. The recent International Timetabling Competition (ITC2021) on sports timetabling showed that, although it is possible to develop general algorithms, the performance of each algorithm varies considerably over the problem instances. This paper provides an instance space analysis for sports timetabling, resulting in powerful insights into the strengths and weaknesses of eight state-of-the-art algorithms. Based on machine learning techniques, we propose an algorithm selection system that predicts which algorithm is likely to perform best when given the characteristics of a sports timetabling problem instance. Furthermore, we identify which characteristics are important in making that prediction, providing insights in the performance of the algorithms, and suggestions to further improve them. Finally, we assess the empirical hardness of the instances. Our results are based on large computational experiments involving about 50 years of CPU time on more than 500 newly generated problem instances. This is the peer-reviewed author-version of https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejor.2024.06.005, published in the European Journal of Operational Research.
