Tidal river management for sustainable agriculture in the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta: Implication for land use policy

No full text
The tidal river management (TRM) approach is an indigenous management practice in the Southwest part of the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta in Bangladesh. This approach has a high potential for extending area under agriculture with a positive impact on sustainable production and consequently on sustainable land use planning. Until recently, no studies provide a quantitative assessment on agricultural benefits of TRM operation. In this study, we aim to assess the benefits of TRM operation by using innovative approaches such as comparing land use change, agricultural production and economic cost-benefit analysis for two scenarios (with and without TRM) in the Hari-Teka-Bhadra catchment. We found that the financial benefit of TRM operation was 85.5 million US dollar per year from the agriculture sector. The results are useful for promoting land use policy through TRM approach in achieving greater sustainability in the area

Hyperfine splitting of [Al VI] 3.66 mu m and the Al isotopic ratio in NGC 6302

No full text
The core of planetary nebula NGC 6302 is filled with high-excitation photoionized gas at low expansion velocities. It represents a unique astrophysical situation in which to search for hyperfine structure (HFS) in coronal emission lines from highly ionized species. HFS is otherwise blended by thermal or velocity broadening. Spectra containing [Al vr] 3.66 mu m P-3(2) <- P-3(1), obtained with Phoenix on Gemini South at resolving powers of up to 75000, resolve the line into five hyperfine components separated by 20-60 km s(-1) as a result of the coupling of the I = 5/2 nuclear spin of Al-27 with the total electronic angular momentum J. The isotope Al-26 has a different nuclear spin of I = 5, and a different HFS, which allows us to place a 3 sigma upper limit on the Al-26/Al-27 abundance ratio of 1/33. We measure the HFS magnetic dipole coupling constants for [Al vr], and provide the first estimates of the electric quadrupole HFS coupling constants obtained through astronomical observations of an atomic transition

Parametric studies and reliability of near-wall turbulence modeling for Large Eddy Simulation of incompressible flows / Khan Raqib Mahmud, M. M. Rhaman and Abul Kalam Al Azad

We present the parametric studies of near-wall turbulence modeling for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of incompressible flows. Flow across a step channel is considered for the numerical studies as the complex wall bounded flows can be highly sensitive to the friction enforced and results are analyzed according to the physics of the flow. We apply the wall shear stress model to model the boundary layers in LES which we refer to as near-wall turbulence modeling. This paper is mainly concerned with the investigation of sensitivity of friction parameter of wall shear stress model and the reliability of near-wall turbulence modeling for LES of incompressible flows. The accuracy and efficiency of LES with near-wall turbulence modeling for complex turbulent flows are investigated by the parametric studies of model parameters. It is observed that wall shear stress model computes the reattachment length for flows in a step channel for both constant and parabolic inflow profile efficiently and with high accuracy compared with other results

The well-known work Muʿǧam al-buldān (Dictionary of the countries), which was completed by the geographer and scholar Yāqūt al-Rūmī al-Ḥamawī (d. 626/1229) a year before his death, provides valuable information on the many place-names collected by this author. Such information is not limited only to geographical aspects, but also involves literary and biographical ones, and has been addressed in works related to al-Andalus. My purpose in the present article is to make a first approach to the image that Yāqūt projects of the Maghreb through some specific examples, making a brief tour of the sources he used, and especially the Andalusī geographer Abū ʿUbayd al-Bakrī (d. 487/1094), whom Yāqūt extensively quoted throughout his work.

On the Effect of Perceived Test Impact on Test Anxiety and Attainment of PhD Candidates: Studying English Proficiency Test in Islamic Azad University

No full text
Research findings has shown that high stakes test bring about unfortunate consequences inside and beyond educational context which are known as washback and impact respectively. English proficiency test (EPT) of Islamic Azad University (IAU) in Iran, as an obligatory part of the PhD graduation program, is not an exception. Thus, considering possible adverse consequences of the test, the current research was an attempt to investigate the effect of perceived test impacts on test anxiety and attainment of the examinees. To this aim, a mixed method design was employed in which quantitative and qualitative data were collected from 81 PhD candidates in different disciplines of the humanities. In the first phase, adopting a framework for test impact perception, a structured interview was conducted on the basis of which participants were assigned to NPTI (non-perceived test impact), MPTI (moderately perceived test impact) and SPTI (severely perceived test impact). Then performance of these was compared in an adopted test anxiety scale (five-point Likert scale) and EPT of IAU. Kruskal-Wallis and one-way ANOVA were used to analyze the data. The findings on test anxiety scale indicated a significant difference between groups (χ2 (2) = 52.618, p = 0.000.). However, the group means were not significantly different in EPT (F (2, 77) = 1.975, p = 0.146). Findings obtained from test anxiety supported previous studies carried out in the literature while those from EPT stood in sharp contrast. An experimental design is required to control other variables that interact with these findings. Yet, these findings have implications for applied linguistics, researchers and educational decision makers

Determination of Immune Reactive Proteins of Cysticercus Tenuicollis from Naturally Infected Sheep and Goats in AL-Muthanna Province /Iraq

No full text
In the current study, 8 samples of Cysticercus tenuicollis cysts were collected from sheep and goats (four cysts for each) from slaughterhouses of AL-Muthanna province during the period from January - February 2023. The study aimed to identify the immune reactive proteins present in the cysts fluid, using SDS-PAGE technique (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate-Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis) and Western blot technique, by using the Protein Ladder with molecular weights of 10.5 - 14 - 22 - 29 - 42 - 51 - 62 – 70 – 95 – 130 – 175 KDa. The results of the SDS-PAGE showed the presence of 7 bands of proteins in the cyst fluid, molecular weight in the range of 120 - 27 kDa, and molecular weights of 120 - 90 - 70 - 60 - 47 - 38 - 27 kDa. Each of them is a major protein with some variations. It turned out that proteins with a molecular weight of 90-70-60 kDa were dominant, as they had a greater density than the others did, and they appeared in all eight samples. As for the rest of the molecular weights, their appearance differed from one sample to another. The results of the Western blotting showed the presence of 6 bands of proteins, and they had molecular weights within the range of 120-27 kDa.The proteins with molecular weights of 90 - 60 - 38 kDa appeared in all eight samples very clearly, which indicates that they are Specific immune reactive proteins in the cysts fluid. The Western blot technique is performed on Cysticercus tenuicollis from goats and sheep for the first time in Iraq
