Enacting the Last Mile: Experiences of Smart Contracts in Courier Deliveries

    No full text
Smart contract systems could change the nature of last-mile deliv- ery for the better through enhanced precision, coordination and accountability. However, technological complexity poses a chal- lenge for end-users participating in the design process, making it hard to explore their experiences and incorporate their perspectives. We describe a case study where technological prototypes create smart contract experiences for professional couriers and receptionists, allowing them to speculate about emerging possibilities, whilst remaining grounded in their current practices. Participants enacted a series of deliveries, choreographed by smart contracts, and their responses were explored in post-experience, one-to-one interviews. Working with professionals to explore the potential impact of smart contract technologies, revealed the systemic webs of value underlying their existing work practices. This has implications for design of such technologies, in which increased automation, efciency and accountability must be delicately balanced with the benefts of sustaining personal values, relationships and agency.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Human Information Communication Desig

Synergistic effect of erythromycin on polymorphonuclear cell antibacterial activity against erythromycin-resistant phenotypes of Streptococcus pyogenes.[*A.M.Cuffini is the corresponding author]

    No full text
International audienceTo evaluate the synergistic activity of erythromycin and human polymorphonuclear cells (PMNs) on the binomial erythromycin-resistant (ERY) /host, the phagocytic and bactericidal activities of PMNs against ERY streptococcal strains (cMLS, M, and iMLS A, B and C phenotypes) were assessed in the presence of the macrolide. The results showed that when erythromycin, PMNs and streptococci [both erythromycin-sensitive (ERY) and ERY] were simultaneously present in the culture medium, PMN phagocytic activity was similar to that of drug-free controls. In contrast, the results emphasised a significant high increase in intracellular killing by PMNs in the presence of erythromycin not only for ERY streptococci but also for ERY with high (cMLS, iMLS A and iMLS B phenotypes) and moderate (M and iMLS C phenotypes) erythromycin resistance compared with controls without drug. From literature data it emerged that, even if intracellularly concentrated, erythromycin is relatively inactive because of its instability. The results indicate that the enhanced intra-PMN streptococcal killing detected is mainly attributable to PMN bactericidal systems that synergise with intracellular erythromycin in eradicating ERY strains (both with high and moderate resistance). These data confirm that the antibiotic resistance detected in vitro does not always imply a failure of antimicrobial treatment

Jan Targoyn: introligator poznański ery Odrodzenia

    No full text
Aim: the present article discusses the operation of the workshop of master bookbinder Jan Targoyn – one of the most important, though still not properly recognised, Poznań-based bookbinder of the Renaissance era. Methods: using new approaches to bookbinding studies, the author discusses 40 book bindings produced by the workshop in question. Additionally, the bookbinding tools used by the workshop are also briefly scrutinised. Conclusions: as a result of a close study of the historical material available, the operation of the Targoyn workshop indicated in the literature of the subject and spanning the years 1534–1544,  should be expanded by at least one more decade, i.e. until the half of the 1560s. The bulk of the bindings attributed to Targoyn is based on the material and decorative solutions typical for and widespread in other bookbinderies in Poznań at the time that draw inspiration and ready-made patterns from Renaissance German bookbinding techniques. Similarly, the tools used by Targoyn throughout his professional career were of the same provenance. The latter, used for decorative bookbinding, also enter into the ornamentation repertoire typical for the then Poznań-based bookbinders. Wnioski: w świetle dotąd poznanego materiału zabytkowego sygnalizowaną w literaturze przedmiotu aktywność warsztatu Targoyna, obejmującą lata 1534–1544, należy rozszerzyć co najmniej o przeszło jedno dziesięciolecie – do połowy szóstej dekady XVI wieku.

    No full text
The author of the article asks the question whether there is still space for codes in the form in which they were created in the nineteenth century. The conditions for the creation of codes have changed. Lawyers do not require codes in order to completely regulate a given field of social life. The occurrence of decodification is very strong. Lack of cooperation between legal science and the courts makes it difficult to create new codes. However, in the author’s opinion, codes can still play an important and symbolic role. The most important function of codes is to create the axiological foundations of a given branch of law. Zdaniem autora kodeksy mogą jednak nadal odgrywać ważną rolę i pełnić funkcję w pewnej mierze symboliczną. Najważniejszym zadaniem ko-deksów jest bowiem tworzenie aksjologicznych podstaw danej dziedziny prawa, przede wszystkim formułowanie katalogu zasad decydujących o jej autonomii

Real-time and selective recognition of erythromycin by self-assembly of calix[4]arene on QCM sensor

    No full text
This paper describes the synthesis of an amino morpholine-based the new schiff base calix[4]arene (compound 5), it's coating on Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) crystal as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM), and real-time detection of erythromycin (ERY) in aqueous media. The characterization of the QCM sensor has been succeeded with atomic force microscopy and contact angle measurements. Initial experiments revealed that the frequency response decreased quickly as expected and reached equilibrium within 5 min which means that there was a good interaction between the compound 5 coated QCM sensor surface and ERY molecules. The QCM sensor showed a linear response towards ERY solutions in different concentrations ranging from 10 to 200 mu M, with the sensitivity (S) and limit of detection (LOD) being 0.66 Hz/NM and 4.80 NM, respectively. Furthermore, the adsorption behavior and mechanism of ERY onto the QCM sensor were applied for this sensing system and the adsorption data exhibited a good correlation with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm in terms of R-2 and Delta m(max). The QCM sensor was shown outstanding selective performance to ERY among some biologic molecules such as amino add, drug, hormone, vitamin. Thus, real-time, sensitive, selective and effective recognition of ERY was performed by a calixarene derivative coated QCM sensor. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V.
