    INVENTORY OF KENYAH LEPO TAU SEGMENTAL SOUNDS

    Studies on the phonological description of Kenyah language are very limited. Initiated by Lees, she found 24 phonemes of Lepo Tau, one of Kenyah language branches are briefly explained on her article. Listing 18 consonants and 6 vowels, this article provides a preliminary analysis of the sound system of Lepo Tau. To a certain extent, Rufinus similarly states the same number of phonemes of the language. A study by Soriente in 2003 provides some more descriptions of the phonology of Kenyah language. It states that Lepo Tau language has 23 phonemes, 17 consonants and 6 vowels. Some of the result register 18 underlying forms of consonants in KLT which are phonetically realized into 23 representations of consonant. List of vowel shows 8 representations generated from 5 underlying forms of vowel. The descriptions of their representation include the nature of their 13 distinctive features. </p

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    ANXIETY OF ENGLISH LEARNING AND LEARNING STRATEGIES’ INFLUENCE TO SPEAKING ABILITY

    This study focuses on investigating the influence of anxiety in learning English, learning strategies and English speaking ability of the students where English is their foreign language. Results of the study show that most of the respondents (82.01% = 110 respondents) belong to the second level of foreign language classroom anxiety or medium anxiety. Meanwhile, language learning strategies are applied in varied ways and there is no single strategy dominates the students’ choice. Speaking ability test shows the scores of the students range from 53 to 82 where only half number of the students achieves satisfying scores (70-82). Based on the statistical calculation using multiple regression, the value of correlation between anxiety level and speaking ability is -0.325. Therefore, the statistical hypothesis that stating anxiety of the learning of English gives significant influence to speaking ability is accepted (Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted). On the contrary, for the correlation between learning strategies and speaking ability the value is 0.104 with significant level is 0.116. The significant level is higher than 0.05 displays that there is no correlation between those two variables. Result of ANOVA is F = 8.213, sig. = 0.00 (less than 0.05). The multiple regression model of the result of this study is Ŷ = 90.057 - 0.159X1 - 0.031X2. This model indicates that the regression is significant. The result also shows that anxiety level and learning strategies give low influence to speaking ability (11.1%)

    TECHNOLOGICAL, PEDAGOGICAL, AND CONTENT KNOWLEDGE (TPACK) PERCEPTIONS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH TEACHERS IN SAMARINDA

    Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) competency is a relevant competency that teachers must have in line with the 4.0 era where technological developments are very necessary. This research aims to find out how Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) perception of junior high school English Teachers in Samarinda and find out whether there are differences in the TPACK perception on factors of gender, age and teaching experience. The sample of study was 42 teachers who were willing to fill out the questionnaire on the distributed Google Form. The results of this research were that the highest TPACK perception was in the Content Knowledge component at 77.98% and the lowest was in the TPK component at 70.12%. The results of this research show that there are no differences in perception based on gender, age, or teaching experience where the Sig (2-tailed) value is&gt; 0.05 so there is no difference in three factors. &nbsp

    Politics is always linked to activities that have an impact on government or societal action and policies. For a variety of reasons, a speech can be a powerful tool, and any speech, particularly one intended to persuade, must be rhetorical. A persuasive speech, such as Donald Trump's, seeks to persuade the audience to accept his idea by making a reasonable claim and providing evidence to support it, because Donald Trump has the potential to be a positive force for the American economy. The purpose of this analysis is to identify how Trump uses discourse about a critical issue (the American economy) to portray a "us versus them" message. Two approaches to analysis were used in this study: Fairclough's CDA (2013) and Van Dijk's (2008). The outcome demonstrated power in his speech and demonstrated the closeness between Trump's administrations; additionally, his speech persuaded the people to accept his speech. As a result, the speech reflected both negative and positive aspects in lauding his administration's accomplishments

    Pre-Service Teachers’ Performance in Applying the ARCS Model on Technology in Education Course

    This study aimed to find: (1) to elaborate pre-service teachers’ performance in applying the ARCS model on technology in education course; (2) to elaborate pre-service teachers’ difficulties and solution in integrating ARCS to technology in education. The Attention, Relevance, Confidence, Satisfaction (ARCS) model is an instructional design framework developed by Keller (2010), the model focuses on strategies to motivate and engage learners in the educational process. This study used a case study with qualitative approach. In this study, the participants were three student-teachers of English Education Department at who met the criteria. The data of this research were collected through interviews and analyzed by using Thematic Analysis adopted from Braun &amp; Clarke (2006).&nbsp; The researcher found that the pre-service teachers in the Technology in Education course relatively had good knowledge of ARCS components. It was concluded that most of the pre-service teachers were able to integrate the core components of ARCS. Some of The EFL pre-service teachers taught their content lesson effectively by using ARCS instructional models with specific technology strategies. The result also showed that various difficulties were faced by the pre-service teachers in integrating ARCS to Technology in Education course. The difficulties were from designing the content, translating the material to media, choosing the suitable template, making the material relevance, and set learning objective. To overcome the difficulties, the pre-service teachers looked for the example, making the outline, and also making careful planning in translating the material

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
