WOS: 000268197500010In this work the nature and peculiarities of the inversion walls and singular points, which can spontaneously arise or can be stimulated in the homeotropic and planar oriented textures of the thermotropic nematogens, have been investigated for large temperature interval. The interaction force and mean approach velocity of the singular points, having opposite optical sign, have been calculated. The optical mappings and sketches of the inversion walls and singularities, taking place in the oriented textures of the nematogens, are presented. (C) 2009 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KONSTRUKSI PASANGAN CALON DALAM PILGUB JATENG 2008 OLEH MEDIA MASSA (KASUS PEMBERITAAN JAWA POS RADAR SEMARANG DAN SUARA MERDEKA)

    No full text
Hasilnya, mereka cenderung mengkonstruksikan pasangan Bambang Sadono-M. Adnan, Bibit Waluyo-Rustriningsih dan HM. Tamzil-Rozaq Rais dengan bingkai yang favorable. Sedangkan pasangan Agus Soeyitno-Kholiq Arif dan Sukawi Sutarip- Sudharto dalam bingkai unfavorable. Peculiarities of Defective Formations in Heterophase Regions of the Thermotropic Phase Transitions in Liquid Crystals

    No full text
WOS: 000467977500005A unique feature of phase transitions in liquid crystalline materials is the availability of heterophase regions. In such regions, the simultaneous coexistence of high temperature and low temperature phases takes place. Thermal mobility and temperature gradient in the heterophase regions lead to the appearance of various types of defective formations in the aligned and non-aligned textures of liquid crystalline materials. In the present work, the morphologic, structural, and optical peculiarities of defective formations and non-homogeneities, which appear in the heterophase regions of phase transitions, are investigated. The singular points, disclination, inversion walls, droplets, and confocal formations are objects of the investigations herein. The heterophase regions of the direct and reverse nematic isotropic liquid and smectic A isotropic liquid, smectic C isotropic liquid, and smectic C* isotropic liquid thermotropic phase transitions are created by the original method, that is, the capillary temperature wedge method. Crystallo-optics and crystallo-physics methods are used in this work.Research Foundation of Mugla Sitki Kocman UniversityMugla Sitki Kocman University [15/124]Author is thankful to Prof. Belkis Bilgin-Eran for OHMP and OMPMP liquid crystals. Electronic Braille Document Reader

    No full text
This paper presents an investigation into developing a portable Braille device which would allow visually impaired individuals to read electronic documents by actuating Braille text on a finger. Braille books tend to be bulky in size due to the minimum size requirements for each Braille cell. E-books can be read in Braille using refreshable Braille displays connected to a computer. However, the refreshable Braille displays are expensive, bulky and are not portable. These factors restrict blind and visually impaired individuals from accessing much of the literature which is not available in Braille. The proposed device overcomes the problem of carrying bulky Braille books by allowing multiple E-books to be saved in a portable memory device. Translating text to Braille pattern gives the blind access to non-Braille literature. The single Braille cell design reduces the bulk of the device allowing it to be portable and reducing the cost. A prototype was developed to prove Braille could be read by actuating Braille characters on a finger. The device read text from an SD card, translated it into Braille characters and actuated the Braille pattern which blind volunteers were able to read. The investigation confirmed the feasibility of the Electronic Braille document reader. It also proved the theory that Braille could be read from a single Braille cell by the patterns actuating on a finger instead of the finger sliding across an already formed Braille pattern

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Unsupervised shape clustering using diffusion map

    No full text
The quotient space of all smooth and connected curves represented by a fixed number of boundary points is a finite-dimensional Riemannian manifold, also known as a shape manifold. This makes the preservation of locality a critically important issue when reducing the dimensionality of shapes on the manifold. We present a completely unsupervised clustering algorithm employing diffusion maps for locality-preserving embedding of shapes onto a much lower-dimensional space. The algorithm first obtains a non-linear low-dimensional embedding of shape context features of outer boundary contours of the shapes. Considering the embedded coordinates as a new minimalist representation of shapes, a clustering of shapes is obtained using a finite mixture model. The proposed clustering algorithm is computationally efficient, as it relies on clustering in a very lowdimensional space, and produces much improved results (88.6% for a 7-class dataset) as compared to clustering with conventional linear projections
