The present doctoral research, entitled Paulistano Communism: the specificity of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCB) in the city of São Paulo (1922 – 1938), aims to present the thesis that the PCB in São Paulo developed relatively isolated from the more consistent ideological and organizational nuclei of the Party. This isolation, on one hand, limited its ability to penetrate the São Paulo labor movement and, on the other hand, allowed the emergence of intellectuals with a relatively distinct Marxism compared to that which predominated in the Party leadership. This constituted, during the period from 1922 to 1938, the particularity of the São Paulo PCB. Our objective is to highlight the core contradiction of the PCB's deficient performance in the then largest industrial center of the country during its first decades of existence.

The Alianca Nacional Libertadora (ANL) was a popular front that existed in Brazil in the 1930s. It was composed of parties such as the Communist Party of Brazil (PCB), the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB), the leftist lieutenant, unions and other popular associations. Its agrarian and anti-imperialist program, due to the fact that the ANL has become a mass organization, had great repercussions and continued with its principles being defended by the organizations of the Brazilian left at least until the end of the 20th century. Our objective in this article is to make an exhibition of the national liberating program from a historical perspective, addressing its context of emergence and existence, the historical problems of Brazil that the organization proposed to solve and make a succinct approach of how these problems were common to others national political forces present at that time.Univ Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho Un, Ciencias Sociais, Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Estadual Paulista Julio de Mesquita Filho Un, Ciencias Sociais, Sao Paulo, Brazi

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Astrojildo Pereira is known as the main organizer of the founding of the Communist Party of Brazil (PCB), in 1922. Having held the position of General Secretary of the PCB throughout the 1920s, he even made up the Executive Committee of the Communist International (CE- IC) from the VI Congress in 1928. However, shortly afterwards, with the tactical turn of the world communist movement, Astrojildo suffered a political persecution within the PCB cadres. Removed from the position of General Secretary, he was sent to lead the Party in the city of São Paulo, where the communist movement accumulated a history of conflicts with the Central Committee of the PCB and chronic difficulty in expanding. There, Astrojildo Pereira fulfilled the role of organizer and propagandist of communism, having founded Socorro Vermelho de São Paulo and published in the newspapers O Homem do Povo and O Tempo. However, the policy carried out by the former General Secretary was at odds with the PCB’s line, leading to Astrojildo’s “purification” from the communist ranks. Little studied in detail by historiography, the analysis of this period that should have been the “political rehabilitation” of Astrojildo Pereira in the PCB will be our object of study here. Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
