No full textUsing unit labor cost (ULC) data from Euro area countries as well as US States and German Länder we investigate inflation convergence using different approaches, namely panel unit root tests, co-integration tests and error-correction models. All in all we cannot reject convergence of ULC growth in EMU, however, country-specific deviations from the rest of the currency union are more pronounced in Europe and more persistent. Unit labor cost growth differentials in the Euro area, Germany, and the US: lessons from PANIC and cluster analysis
No full textInflation differentials in the Euro area are mainly due to a sustained divergence of wage developments across the Euro area, and narrower differences in labour productivity growth (Alvarez et al., 2006). We investigate convergence of inflation using unit labour cost (ULC) growth and applying PANIC (Bai and Ng, 2002, 2004) and cluster procedures (Hobijn and Franses, 2000, Busetti et al., 2006) to Euro area countries as well as US States, US Census Regions and German Laender. Euro area differs in that dispersion in general (and its fraction due to idiosyncratic factors in specific) is larger and common factors are much less important in explaining the variance of ULC growth. Wind loads on a curved roof over a football stadium
No full textRoofing is becoming a common practice in big sport stadiums. One of the main loads roof have to face is wind loads. The uniqueness of these constructions makes it difficult to directly use the construction codes to calculate the wind loads. Because of that, wind tunnel tests are advisable. In this case, the proposed roof over one of the bleachers of the Balaídos stadium in Vigo, Spain has been studied. The roof consists in 11 curved segments, which have been independently studied
Multiple comparison procedures for discrete uniform and homogeneous tests
No full textFinanciado para publicación en acceso aberto: Universidade de Vigo/CISUGDiscrete uniform and homogeneous p-values often arise in applications with multiple testing. For example, this occurs in genome wide association studies whenever a non-parametric one-sample (or two-sample) test is applied throughout the gene loci. In this paper, we consider multiple comparison procedures for such scenarios based on several existing estimators for the proportion of true null hypotheses, p0, which take the discreteness of the p-values into account. The theoretical guarantees of the several approaches with respect to the estimation of p0 and the false discovery rate control are reviewed. The performance of the discrete procedures is investigated through intensive Monte Carlo simulations considering both independent and dependent p-values. The methods are applied to three real data sets for illustration purposes too. Since the particular estimator of p0 used to compute the q-values may influence its performance, relative advantages and disadvantages of the reviewed procedures are discussed. Measuring the quality of motivational interviewing in primary health care encounters: The development and validation of the motivational interviewing assessment scale (MIAS)
No full textBackground: Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented method to help patients change behaviour. Tools that are often used to measure MI are the motivational interviewing skills code' (MISC), the motivational interviewing treatment integrity' (MITI) and the behaviour change counselling index' (BECCI). The first two instruments have not been designed to be used in primary healthcare (PHC) settings. The BECCI actually is time-consuming. The motivational interviewing assessment scale (MIAS, 'EVEM' in Spanish) was developed to measure MI in PHC encounters as an alternative to the previous instruments.Objectives: To validate MIAS as an instrument to assess the quality of MI in PHC settings.Methods: (a) Development: Sixteen experts in MI participated in the design, face and consensus validity, using a Delphi-type methodology. (b) Validation: Setting: 27 PHC centres located in Spain. Subjects: four experts in MI tested its psychometric properties with 332 video recordings coming from the Dislip-EM study (consultations provided by 37 practitioners). Measurements: dimensionality, internal consistency, reliability (intra-class correlation coefficient-ICC), sensitivity to change and convergent validity with the BECCI scale.Results: A 14-item scale was obtained after the validation process. Factor analysis: two factors explained 76.6% of the total variance. Internal consistency, alpha=0.99. Reliability: intra-rater ICC=0.96; inter-rater ICC=0.97. Sensitivity to change: means before and after training were 23.63 versus 38.57 (P< 0.001). Spearman’s coefficient between the MIAS and the BECCI scale was0.98 (P < 0.001).Conclusion: The MIAS is a consistent and reliable instrument to assess the use of MI in PHC settings.S

No full textPhDThis thesis examines the early part of Mary I's reign, focusing on her marriage to
Philip of Habsburg and the marginalisation of their co-monarchy in Tudor historiography.
By looking at the diplomatic background and political opposition in England, I interrogate
the notion that anti-Spanish sentiment was a central cause of the Wyatt rebellion, arguing that
instead its aetiology lay in female sovereignty and the constitutional uncertainties produced
by it. Dynasticism tended to alienate power from familiar, local and territorial sources of
political authority. Infant mortality and the vicissitudes of the marriage market in this context
threatened discrete 'national' identities with an incipient imperialist internationalism. I analyse
in detail the marriage contract and 'Act declaring that the regal power of this realm is in the
Queen's Majesty', using them as evidence to show that anxieties about property rights were
not related to the repudiation of the Supremacy, repeal of Henrician legislation and return of
papal jurisdiction. The staging of the wedding harped on Philip's inferior status, inverting that
which the marriage ceremony rehearsed. The Castilian writing of England as a romance of
chivalry sublimated a sexual licence which repeated the fears played upon by exiled
polemicists that the kingdom had been transformed into the feminised subject of Spanish
male authority. Anti-Spanish propaganda did not reflect popular xenophobia. It was literate
and sophisticated, related to sectarian struggle and engaged with theories of justifiable

No full textObjective To describe the profile of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) treated with fingolimod in Spain and to assess the effectiveness and safety of fingolimod after 4 years of inclusion in the Spanish Gilenya Registry. Methods An observational, retrospective/prospective, multicenter case registry, including all patients with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) starting treatment with fingolimod in 43 centers in Spain. Analyses were performed in the overall population and in subgroups according to prior disease-modifying therapy (DMT): glatiramer acetate/interferon beta-1 (BRACE), natalizumab, other treatment, or naïve. Results Six hundred and sixty-six evaluable patients were included (91.1% previously treated with at least one DMT). The mean annualized relapse rate (ARR) prior to fingolimod was 1.12, and the mean EDSS at fingolimod initiation was 3.03. Fingolimod reduced the ARR by 71.4%, 75%, 75.5%, and 80.3%, after 1, 2, 3 and 4 years, respectively (p<0.001). This significant reduction in the ARR continuedto be observed in all subgroups. After 4 years, the EDSS showed a minimal deterioration, with the EDSS scores from year 1 to year 4 remaining mostly stable. The percentage of patients without T1 Gd+ lesions progressively increased from 45.6% during the year prior to fingolimod initiation to 88.2% at year 4. The proportion of patients free from new/enlarged T2 lesions after 4 years of fingolimod treatment was 80.3%. This trend in both radiological measures was also observed in the subgroups. Adverse events (AEs) were experienced by up to 41.6% of patients (most commonly: lymphopenia [12.5%] and urinary tract infection [3.7%]). Most AEs were mild in severity, 3.6% of patients had serious AEs. Conclusions The patient profile was similar to other observational studies. The results obtained from the long-term use of fingolimod showed that it was effective, regardless of prior DMT, and it had adequate safety results, with a positive benefit-risk balance
