RFID readability around wine bottle boxes
This contribution focuses on RFID performance in wineries. Specifically, it deals with the problem of readability of the RFID tags attached to wine bottles when packed in boxes. The results of a measurement campaign around cardboard boxes of six glass bottles, individually labelled with an RFID tag, are analyzed to stablish the conditions under which RFID is a valid technology to track wine bottles. The consequence is a guide of good practices to implement RFID tracking systems in wineries and warehouses, when we want to track individual bottles packed in boxes.European Union (CIP-Pilot Actions) | Ref. 25044
Agencia Estatal de Investigación | Ref. Tracking, targeting, and conserving soil biodiversity
Nature conservation literature and policy instruments mainly focus on the impacts of human development and the benefits of nature conservation for oceans and aboveground terrestrial organisms (e.g., birds and plants) and processes (e.g., food production), but these efforts almost completely ignore the majority of terrestrial biodiversity that is unseen and living in the soil (

). Little is known about the conservation status of most soil organisms and the effects of nature conservation policies on soil systems. Yet like “canaries in the coal mine,” when soil organisms begin to disappear, ecosystems will soon start to underperform, potentially hindering their vital functions for humankind. Soil biodiversity and its ecosystem functions thus require explicit consideration when establishing nature protection priorities and policies and when designing new conservation areas. To inform such efforts, we lay out a global soil biodiversity and ecosystem function monitoring framework to be considered in the context of the post-2020 discussions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). To support this framework, we suggest a suite of soil ecological indicators based on essential biodiversity variables (EBVs) (

) (see the figure and table S3) that directly link to current global targets such as the ones established under the CBD, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the Paris Agreement (table S1)
Sign language anonymization: face swapping versus avatars
The visual nature of Sign Language datasets raises privacy concerns that hinder data sharing, which is essential for advancing deep learning (DL) models in Sign Language recognition and translation. This study evaluated two anonymization techniques, realistic avatar synthesis and face swapping (FS), designed to anonymize the identities of signers, while preserving the semantic integrity of signed content. A novel metric, Identity Anonymization with Expressivity Preservation (IAEP), is introduced to assess the balance between effective anonymization and the preservation of facial expressivity crucial for Sign Language communication. In addition, the quality evaluation included the LPIPS and FID metrics, which measure perceptual similarity and visual quality. A survey with deaf participants further complemented the analysis, providing valuable insight into the practical usability and comprehension of anonymized videos. The results show that while face swapping achieved acceptable anonymization and preserved semantic clarity, avatar-based anonymization struggled with comprehension. These findings highlight the need for further research efforts on securing privacy while preserving Sign Language understandability, both for dataset accessibility and the anonymous participation of deaf people in digital content.
This note reviews the methodologies related to language learning as a multimodal linguistic experience — specifically, the simultaneous use of sign and oral languages to improve the communicative competence of deaf and hearing-impaired people. The role of the mother tongue in the learning of other languages is currently under revision with the emergence of concepts such as ‘translanguaging’, which assumes that speakers possess a single linguistic system whose characteristics are fully integrated rather than being associated with a single language. This review, additional to the current context promoting multilingualism and respect for diversity that educational administrations disseminate in schools across Europe, provides an exceptional framework for contributing to the normalization of sign languages in society and incorporating a multimodal perspective on communication in the study of language development
In the face of increased situations in which parents or guardians apply to the Administration the assumption of the guardianship of the minors in their care in view of their antisocial and violent behaviour, Organic Law 8/2015, of 22 july, of modification of the system for the protection of children and adolescents, provides for a new special process for the admission of children and adolescents with behavior problems in special protection centres (articles 25 to 35 Organic Law 1/1996, de 15 january, Legal Protection of the Child and article 778 bis LEC). The objective pursued by the rule is the regulation of this measure of protection in a guaranteed and unified manner for the whole national territory as previously, it was the Autonomous Communities that regulated this matter, maintaining a disparity of criteria not only in relation to the profile of the child who could be entered and the mode of the protection centre, but also its content generated serious doubts of constitutionality insofar as they included limitations on the fundamental rights of the minor. Organic Law 8/2015 try to respond to the voices that required that unique regulation and covered with all the guarantees however, the normative dispersion of the procedural provisions is contained in both Articles 778 bis LEC as in articles 26 and ss Organic Law 1/1996, brings with it a whole series of difficulties of application and doubts of interpretation, creating legal uncertaint
Inferring fast ecotypic divergence in a protected marine area: comparing QST and FST patterns in Littorina saxatilis subpopulations from Cíes Islands in Spain
The intertidal snail Littorina saxatilis is well known for its remarkable variety of locally adapted populations. A unique L. saxatilis habitat is represented by the sheltered rocky environment found in the natural coastal lagoon of the Cíes Islands (NW Spain). The present-day characteristics of this habitat are relatively recent (~ 70–150 years), some of these have been human induced. In this study, we indirectly tested local adaptation resulting in ecotypic variation in this habitat by estimating the additive genetic differentiation between populations (QST) for morphological shell traits in families of embryos. We compared the Qst and Fst (AFLP loci) between populations of the previously described Crab ecotype (outside the lagoon) and the new Cíes lagoon ecotype (inside) as a proxy for adaptation. For several traits (RW1 and RW2; associated with a change in size of shell aperture) the QST was higher than corresponding FST, which indeed suggest that natural selection could be the force behind the apparent phenotypic divergence observed between the Crab and the Cíes lagoon ecotype. The putative process of local adaptation occurring in the Cíes lagoon ecotype (favoring a reduction of shell aperture) might be considered a case of fast phenotypic evolution driven by anthropogenic effects and with important conservation implications. Further genetic and ecological studies must be carried out to advance our knowledge in such an interesting system.Xunta de Galicia | Ref. ED431C 2016-037Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad | Ref. Record for the quantification of archaeological pottery: state of art and a new proposal. Seville Protocol (prcs/14)
We introduce here a new quantification proposal in protohistoric and classical pottery studies. T he proposal also includes the way of representation of such analytics with the aim of making homogeneous diagnostic, analysis and publication models of any kind of ceramic material disregarding their nature. Therefore, it can be useful for either stratigraphy assemblages or particular series. This standard attempts to improve data interconnection between different areas, between different sites, so more solid and comparable values will be obtained at territorial level. At least, much better than the ones employed nowadays. Finally, using certain conventions in the pottery analysis will help us to build a high rank interpretative system, which may include aspects of commercial, social, cultural and, even, symbolic character
