Mend-Ooyo's poetic novel Altan Ovoo offers a vision of nomadic literature based as much on the history and worldview of Mongol nomadic herders as on the late twentieth century Mongolia, poised between Soviet-influenced socialism and Euro-American democratic capitalism, in which it was written. This dissertation has two aims, namely to offer an overview of Mongol nomadic society and culture and to show the place of literature - and poetry in particular - within this worldview, and then to present Altan Ovoo as a prism through which the ideas on which nomadic culture is based can be shown as being central to the self-image of Mongolia's people, both in relation to the past and to the future

    The role of controlled hypotension upon transfusion requirement during maxillary downfracture in double-jaw surgery

    Introduction: To evaluate the role of induced hypotension during maxillary downfracture osteotomy on the requirement for blood transfusion, duration of operation and induced anaemia in bimaxillary surgery. Material and methods: 45 young orthognathic patients were operated under hypotensive anaesthesia between 2004 and 2006. Operations were LeFort I osteotomies (n=45), bilateral sagittal split osteotomies (BSSO) (n=42), segmental osteotomies (n=3), tongue reduction (n=1), genioplasties (n=15), digastric myotomies (n=2), and bone grafts were the supplementary procedures. Pre-postoperative haemograms, intraoperative blood loss, and duration of operations were the studied parameters. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 11.5 for Windows. Results: None of the patients received a blood transfusion. Mean blood loss was 377 +/- 111.2 mL with the range of 180 mL to the maximum of 625 mL. Mean duration was 267.1 +/- 61.2 min with minimum of 180 min and maximum of 400 min. Mean preop Hb level was 14 +/- 1.9 g/dL with the range from 10.3 g/dL to a maximum of 17.2 g/dL. Mean postop Hb level was 11.8 +/- 2 g/dL with a range of 8.2-16.2 g/dL levels. Preop erythrocyte counts were 435.3 +/- 18.2 and 416.4 +/- 16.1 (x 104/mcL) on the first postop day. Conclusion: Transfusion in bimaxillary orthognathic surgery could be prevented by induction of hypotension during maxillary downfracture.     Design of annulene-within-an-annulene systems by the altanisation approach. A study of: Altan-[n] annulenes

    The altanisation strategy, devised to design molecules with large and paratropic perimeter circulations, is applied to the family of [n]annulenes to give, altan-[n]annulenes, i.e. [n,5]coronenes. Analytical expressions are obtained for the eigenvalues of the Hückel Hamiltonian for altan-[n]annulenes, and used in conjunction with selection rules derived from the ipsocentric approach to predict patterns of global ring current in these systems. Density-functional calculations performed on seven altan-[n]annulenes, three neutral and four charged, give current-density maps in essential agreement with the predictions obtained at the unperturbed Hückel level. All but one of the systems show patterns with the tropicities expected for isolated annulenes, in line with the altanisation concept. The apparent exception is altan-[11]annulene-, the only singlet system with a well defined open-shell character in the studied set. The key role of open-shell character can be accommodated by appropriate choice of the occupation numbers of the initial Hückel molecular orbitals, where the anion altan-[11]annulene- is considered as an [11]annulene inside the [22]annulene anion

    Integrated Process Simulation and Die Design in Sheet Metal Forming

    During the recent 10-15 years, Computer Aided Process Planning and Die Design evolved as one of the most important engineering tools in sheet metal forming, particularly in the automotive industry. This emerging role is strongly emphasized by the rapid development of Finite Element Modelling, as well. The purpose of this paper is to give a general overview about the recent achievements in this very important field of sheet metal forming and to introduce some special results in this development activity. Therefore, in this paper, an integrated process simulation and die design system developed at the University of Miskolc, Department of Mechanical Engineering will be analysed. The proposed integrated solutions have great practical importance to improve the global competitiveness of sheet metal forming in the very important segment of industry. The concept described in this paper may have specific value both for process planning and die design engineers

    Приведены результаты изучения лечебной эффективности таблеток альтана (0,01 г) при экспериментальном проктите в сравнении со стандартным препаратом салазопиридазином. Установлено, что в условнотерапевтической дозе 1 мг/кг альтан значительно ослаблял течение патологии: улучшал общетрофические процессы организма животных, нормализовал гематологические и биохимические показатели. При макроскопическом изучении состояния слизистой оболочки прямой кишки установлено достоверное уменьшение площади некроза в 7,5 раз, выраженности воспалительных явлений в 6,9 раз и сокращение длины пораженного участка в 7,3 раза в сравнении с контрольной патологией. По указанным показателям, по влиянию на общетрофические процессы организма животных, а также по некоторым биохимическим показателям (AcAT, G-SH) альтан превосходил препарат сравнения "Салазопиридазин". Полученные результаты свидетельствуют о выраженной лечебной эффективности альтана при экспериментальном проктите и о перспективности его использования в проктологии.Наведені результати вивчення лікувальної ефективності таблеток альтану (0,01 г) при експериментальному проктиті в порівнянні зі стандартним препаратом "Салазопіридазином". Встановлено, що в умовнотерапевтичній дозі 1 мг/кг альтан значно послабляв перебіг патології: покращував загально-трофічні процеси організму тварин, нормалізував гематологічні та біохімічні показники. При макроскопічному вивченні стану слизової оболонки прямої кишки встановлене достовірне зменшення площі некрозу в 7,5 разів, вираженості запальних явищ — у 6,9 разів і скорочення довжини ураженої ділянки в 7,3 разів в порівнянні з контрольною патологією. За вказаними показниками, впливом на загальнотрофічні процеси організму тварин, а також за деякими біохімічними показниками (АсАТ, G-SH) альтан переважав препарат порівняння "Салазопіридазин". Отримані результати свідчать про виражену лікувальну ефективність альтану при експериментальному проктиті і перспективність його використання в проктології.Results of the therapeutic efficiency' study of the tablets altan (0,01 g) in experimental proctitis in comparison with standard drug "Salazopiridasin" have been given. It's been determined that altan in the conditional therapeutic dose (1 mg/kg) weaked considerably pathologic process: it improved general trophic processes in the animals' organism, normalized haematological and biochemical indexes. Macroscopi-cal investigation of rectum bowel state showed reliable decrease of necrosis surface (7.5 times), an expression of an inflammation action (6,9 times) and reducing of the length of the lesion surface (7,3 times) in comparison with control pathology. Altan exceeded preparation of the comparison "Salazopiridasin" on these indexes and on an influence on the general trophic processes in the animals' organism and on some biochemical indexes (AsAT, G-SH). Results received are an evidence of the marked therapeutic efficiency of altan by experimental proctitis and the prospects of its use in proctology

    Представлено результати дослідження впливу альтанової мазі на тканини пародонта і її резорбтивної дії у щурів з травматичним пошкодженням пародонта. Встановлено, що альтанова мазь має кращий терапевтичний ефект на пародонт, ніж метилурацилова мазь. Обидва препарата мають антиоксидантні властивості, які проявляються в тканинах пародонта, в крові і в печінці.There were represented the results o f investigation o f the altan ointment influence on parodontium tissues and its resorption action in rats with traumatic injury of parodontium. It was determined that the altan ointment reveals a therapeutic effect on parodontium more expressively than methyiuracil ointment. Both preparations have antioxidant properties which are revealed in parodontium tissues, in blood and in liver

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
