Water Supply Network Partitioning Based on Simultaneous Cost and Energy Optimization

    No full text
AbstractWater Network Partitioning (WNP) improves water network management, simplifying the computation of water budgets and, consequently, allowing the identification and reduction of water loss. It is achieved by inserting flow meters and gate valves in the network, previously clustered in subsystems. The clustering and partitioning phases are carried out with different procedures. The first one requires clustering algorithms that assign network nodes to each district (or cluster). The second one chooses the boundary pipes where flow meters or gate valves are to be inserted. In this paper, SWANP software is employed to achieve a network clustering through two different algorithms based on a multilevel-recursive bisection and community-structure procedures. After that, a novel multi-objective function is introduced and applied to a large Mexican network integrating both cost and energy performance, thus providing a smart Decision Support System (DSS) based on qualitative and quantitative measures, and diagrams for evaluating the optimal layout in terms of the number of districts, cost, and hydraulic performance

The current knowledge on the influence of blood meal in crop nutrition is rather limited. We studied the effects of five different blood meal rates (0, 6.5, 13.0, 19.5 y 26.0 g) added to the cultural medium, with and without the presence of nitrifying bacteria. We assessed the chemical properties of the substrate, the nutritional content and the fruit yield of Capsicum annum L. The concentration of NO3- in the cultural medium increased as the rate of blood meal increased, regardless the levels of nitrifying bacteria. The pH increased as the rates of blood meal with nitrifying bacteria increased. The pH was lower without the addition of nitrifying bacteria. Ca, K and EC in the cultural medium decreased as the rate of blood meal with nitrifying bacteria increased, but their concentration remained consistent without nitrifying bacteria. The content of N and K in plant tissue dropped, as the rates of blood meal increased, regardless the level of nitrifying bacteria. With the addition of nitrifying bacteria, Ca and Mg decreased, when the rates of blood meal increased. Without bacteria, Ca was higher at 19.5 g of blood meal; while Mg was higher with the rates of 0 and 19.5 g. Average fruit weight was higher when we applied blood meal at 6.5, 13.0 and 19.5 g, without bacteria. When we added bacteria, this parameter was higher with 6.5 and 19.5 g blood meal rates. On the other hand, the yield was higher when we added 6.5 g of blood meal, without bacteria. When we added bacteria, the yield was higher, without blood meal

Detective fiction in Cuban society and culture.

    No full text
PhDThe object of this thesis is to reach towards an understanding of Cuban society through a study of its detective fiction and more particularly contemporary Cuban society through the novels of the author and critic, Leonardo Padura Fuentes. The method has been to trace the development of Cuban detective writing and to read Padura Fuentes in the light of the work of twentieth century Western European literary critics and philosophers including Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, Terry Eagleton, Roland Barthes, Jean Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault, Jean François Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard in order to gain a better understanding of the social and historical context from which this genre emerged. By concentrating on the literary texts, I have explored readings which lead out into an analysis of the broader philosophical, political and historical issues raised by the Cuban revolution. Since it deals primarily with modes of deviance and notions of legality and justice within the context of the modern state, detective fiction is particularly well suited to this type of investigation. The intention is to show how this is as valid in the Cuban context as it is in advanced capitalist societies where such research has already been carried out with some success. The thesis comprises an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion. The chapters are divided into three sections. Chapters 1 to 3 attempt a broad theoretical, historical and socio-political analysis of the cultural reality within which the Cuban revolutionary detective genre emerged. Chapters 4 to 6 analyse the Cuban detective narrative from its inception in the early part of the twentieth century until the emergence of Leonardo Padura Fuentes as the foremost exponent of the genre in Cuba after 1991. Chapters 7- 10 concentrate upon the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes, offering a reading of his detective tetralogy informed by the preceding discussion. The contribution made by the thesis to knowledge of the subject is to build upon the work of Seymour Menton and Amelia S. Simpson on the development of the Cuban detective novel and to provide analyses of the pre-Revolutionary Cuban detective narrative and the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes for the first time in the English language. The thesis concludes that the study of this popular genre in Cuba is of crucial importance to the scholar who wishes to reach as full an understanding of the social dynamics within that society as possible. In particular, it proves that Cuban detective fiction provides a useful barometer of social change which records the shifts in the Cuban Zeitgeist that have taken place over the past century

The objective of this work is to validate the content of the ESTPORT questionnaire, designed to measure the perception of high level university student athletes about dual careers in Colombia. The dual career involves the reconciliation between sports and academic careers, but faces significant barriers that can lead to the abandonment of studies. The theoretical framework focuses on the validation of assessment and perception instruments, based on theories and previous studies by authors such as Sánchez Pato et al. (2016) that explore the motivations and effects of dual careers in academic and sport contexts. The methodology includes the research design, the validation methods of the ESTPORT questionnaire, and the determination of relevant dimensions and items to measure the perceptions of university student athletes about dual career in Colombia. The expert group played a crucial role in critically reviewing the ESTPORT questionnaire, providing constructive feedback, assessing its cultural appropriateness, and ensuring an adequate level of reliability for the variables assessed. This validation resulted in good to excellent reliability ratings for the instrument. The results obtained through the methodological process show the perceptions and challenges identified by university student athletes. The implications of these findings are discussed and recommendations are proposed to support the effective implementation of dual career programs in the Colombian context. The findings highlight the importance of adequately supporting college student-athletes in their dual career by providing resources and services that address identified barriers and promote academic and athletic success. It is recommended that dual career program offerings be expanded and that mentoring and support for student-athletes be improved in order to maximize the personal and academic benefits derived from their participation in collegiate sport. The implementation of these methodological processes not only ensured the validity and reliability of the ESTPORT questionnaire, but also highlighted the importance of adapting research instruments to the specific cultural context, thus guaranteeing accurate and applicable results in future studies on dual career in the university sport environment in Colombia.Incluye bibliografíaMaestríaMagister en Ciencias del Deport

Modeling, Design and Control of Multiple Low-Cost Robotic Ground Vehicles

    No full text
abstract: Toward the ambitious long-term goal of a fleet of cooperating Flexible Autonomous Machines operating in an uncertain Environment (FAME), this thesis addresses several critical modeling, design and control objectives for ground vehicles. One central objective was to show how off-the-shelf (low-cost) remote-control (RC) “toy” vehicles can be converted into intelligent multi-capability robotic-platforms for conducting FAME research. This is shown for two vehicle classes: (1) six differential-drive (DD) RC vehicles called Thunder Tumbler (DDTT) and (2) one rear-wheel drive (RWD) RC car called Ford F-150 (1:14 scale). Each DDTT-vehicle was augmented to provide a substantive suite of capabilities as summarized below (It should be noted, however, that only one DDTT-vehicle was augmented with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and 2.4 GHz RC capability): (1) magnetic wheel-encoders/IMU for(dead-reckoning-based) inner-loop speed-control and outer-loop position-directional-control, (2) Arduino Uno microcontroller-board for encoder-based inner-loop speed-control and encoder-IMU-ultrasound-based outer-loop cruise-position-directional-separation-control, (3) Arduino motor-shield for inner-loop motor-speed-control, (4)Raspberry Pi II computer-board for demanding outer-loop vision-based cruise- position-directional-control, (5) Raspberry Pi 5MP camera for outer-loop cruise-position-directional-control (exploiting WiFi to send video back to laptop), (6) forward-pointing ultrasonic distance/rangefinder sensor for outer-loop separation-control, and (7) 2.4 GHz spread-spectrum RC capability to replace original 27/49 MHz RC. Each “enhanced”/ augmented DDTT-vehicle costs less than 175 but offers the capability of commercially available vehicles costing over 500. Both the Arduino and Raspberry are low-cost, well-supported (software wise) and easy-to-use. For the vehicle classes considered (i.e. DD, RWD), both kinematic and dynamical (planar xy) models are examined. Suitable nonlinear/linear-models are used to develop inner/outer-loopcontrol laws. All demonstrations presented involve enhanced DDTT-vehicles; one the F-150; one a quadrotor. The following summarizes key hardware demonstrations: (1) cruise-control along line, (2) position-control along line (3) position-control along curve (4) planar (xy) Cartesian stabilization, (5) cruise-control along jagged line/curve, (6) vehicle-target spacing-control, (7) multi-robot spacing-control along line/curve, (8) tracking slowly-moving remote-controlled quadrotor, (9) avoiding obstacle while moving toward target, (10) RC F-150 followed by DDTT-vehicle. Hardware data/video is compared with, and corroborated by, model-based simulations. In short, many capabilities that are critical for reaching the longer-term FAME goal are demonstrated.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Electrical Engineering 201
