Inequality of Opportunity and the Probability of Being Very Rich or Very Poor

    No full text
This paper models the effects of individuals' background variables on the chances they end up in the extremes of the income distribution. Taking high-quality Australian panel data, we show that factors like the education of one's father have a much stronger impact on belonging to the top 1 per cent than they have on the conditional mean. Similarly, individuals from immigrant families are more likely to belong to both the left and the right tails of income distribution. Identifying the drivers of extreme incomes is important as individuals with very high incomes exert disproportionate political power, while those with very low incomes may drive prejudice and perceptions of disadvantage.Full Tex

Essays on Inequality, Insecurity and Poverty

This thesis comprises four empirical studies concerned with inequality, problems related to the income distribution and their sociopolitical implications. Two of the research papers focus on the measurement of inequality of opportunity (IOp) in Australia and its implications, while the other two contributions are empirical studies on economic insecurity and income instability in the US context. These four chapters are written in the form of self-contained articles. [...]Thesis (PhD Doctorate)Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)Dept Account,Finance & EconGriffith Business SchoolFull Tex

Solano Trindade e a poética da resistência: na ausência, a existência

    No full text
This article aims to point out some lines of force in the poetry of Solano Trindade (1908-1974), one of the most important figures in Afro-Brazilian poetry. Trindade’s artistic production was concentrated between the 1930’s and 1960’s, period within which the author established himself as a militant in favor of black populations and popular art movements, participating in the Teatro Experimental do Negro (TEN) and founding the Teatro Popular Brasileiro (TPB). His poetry was also circumscribed within these two limits of action, managing to fill a gap by recovering the past of Black men and women in Brazil as an act of resistance, affirming the existence of what was socially silenced.

Under the indistinction, the poetics of Antonio Cicero

    No full text
Antonio Cicero (1945-2024) was a poet who published three works of poetry during his lifetime: Guardar (1996), A cidade e os livros (2002), and Porventura (2012). Analysing collocations in articles published in coworking blogs in Portuguese: A comparative study on authentic and translated texts

    No full text
This paper reports on a descriptive and comparative study that falls within corpus based translation studies (Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2004). The goal was to identify and describe similarities and differences in the collocations used in articles published in coworking blogs written originally in Portuguese and in texts of the same genre written in English and translated into Portuguese. Tagnin’s (2013) taxonomy was used to inform our view of collocation. We assume that translated texts may use word combinations that do not sound natural in the target language because they are atypical in texts written originally in this language, following Mauranen’s (2007) findings. Also, this paper’s first author has worked with specialized translation for over a decade and observed that, in this context, there is a generalized expectation for texts to sound natural. We therefore argue that translators should be aware and have a good knowledge of collocations. The articles were collected from websites maintained by coworking companies, processed and analysed following corpus linguistics principles, a methodology that allows the identification of linguistic patterns. Two corpora were used: 1) a parallel corpus, with texts written originally in English and their corresponding translations into Portuguese and 2) a monolingual corpus with texts originally written in Portuguese. The corpora were stored in Sketch Engine (Kilgarriff et al., 2014), and the collocations were identified from n-gram lists from both corpora in Portuguese. The analyses found collocations that were frequently used in both corpora, such as trabalho flexível and espaço de trabalho, which describe professional environments and ways of working. As expected, differences were also found. One example is escritório privativo, which appears only in the translated corpus. In the authentic corpus, this concept is expressed as sala privativa. Thus, this article may be used to raise awareness, among translation students, professional translators, and professors, of the importance of looking for conventional word combinations in the target language while translating texts. This paper reports on a descriptive and comparative study that falls within corpus based translation studies (Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2004). Loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic: Evidence from five European countries.

    No full text
peer reviewedWe use quarterly panel data from the COME-HERE survey covering five European countries to analyse three facets of the experience of loneliness during the COVID-19 pandemic. First, in terms of prevalence, loneliness peaked in April 2020, followed by a U-shape pattern in the rest of 2020, and then remained relatively stable throughout 2021 and 2022. We then establish the individual determinants of loneliness and compare them to those found in the literature predating the COVID-19 pandemic. As in previous work, women are lonelier, and partnership, education, income, and employment protect against loneliness. However, the pandemic substantially shifted the age profile: it is now the youngest who are the loneliest. We last show that pandemic policies affected loneliness, which rose with containment policies but fell with government economic support. Conversely, the intensity of the pandemic itself, via the number of recent COVID-19 deaths, had only a minor impact. The experience of the pandemic has thus shown that public policy can influence societal loneliness trends
