Frontiers of SLE: review of the 5th International Congress of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Cancun, Mexico, April 20-25, 1998.
No full textObjective: To review the recent advances in clinical and experimental research in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: Review of the 5th International Congress of SLE that took place in Cancun, Mexico, on April 20-25, 1998. Results: The main topics presented at the conference are summarized. These include new findings about the genetics of SLE due to fine mapping of the patients' genes and lupus mouse models, the nucleosome as a major autoantigen in SLE, serving as an immunogen for pathogenic T helper and B cells and contributing to the development of lupus nephritis, abnormalities of apoptosis as a cause of SLE, and apoptotic mechanisms as a cause of autoimmunization. Other topics included the pathophysiologic role of anti-endothelial cell antibodies in lupus with central nervous system involvement, vasculitis, the thrombotic diathesis associated with the antiphospholipid syndrome, induction of endothelial cell apoptosis and its regulation by the idiotypic network, the penetration of antinuclear antibodies to the cytoplasm and nucleus and the subsequent interaction with cellular organelles, and new aspects in the antiphospholipid syndrome, including animal models of the disease and the importance of antibodies to beta-2-glycoprotein-I and prothrombin. Advances in the clinical aspects of SLE included clinical manifestations, diagnosis, pregnancy and neonatal SLE, infections, hormones, and treatment. Additionally, four "Lectures of A Lifetime," entitled (1) What causes lupus? (2) From natural autoimmunity to autoimmune disease; (3) The idiotypic network and SLE; and (4) Late-stage morbidity and mortality in SLE-the role of accelerated atherosclerosis were presented. Conclusions: Recent advances provide new insights into the pathogenesis of SLE, as well as hope for novel therapeutic modalities and diagnostic measures. Get PDFThis work studies how the so-called “Disaster” of Curalaba and the death of Governor Martín Oñez de Loyola, at the hands of indigenous people, in 1598, were communicated. By using a map dated back to 1610, which sought to represent the disaster and the resulting indigenous uprising, an attempt is made to account for the communication and information problems lived in Chile at the beginning of the xvii century. Through various agents, and information exchanged between Lima, Santiago de Chile and Madrid, we built an image of this misfortunate event as a way of diagnosing the situation and depicting the reversibility of military failure. Thus, both messengers and procurators communicated and represented the disgrace of Chile at court, where the Viceroy of the time had a leading voice.En este trabajo se analiza cómo se comunicó el llamado “Desastre” de Curalaba y la muerte del gobernador Martín Oñez de Loyola, en manos indígenas en 1598. A través de un mapa de 1610, que buscó representar el desastre y la consecuente sublevación indígena, se intenta dar cuenta de los problemas de comunicación e información del Chile a inicios de siglo. Mediante diversos agentes, con informaciones cruzadas entre Lima, Santiago de Chile y Madrid, se fue construyendo tanto una imagen del infortunio como una forma de diagnóstico de la situación y proyectar la reversibilidad del fracaso militar . Así, los mensajeros y procuradores comunicaron y representaron la desgracia de Chile en la corte, donde el Virrey tuvo una voz protagonista.Neste trabalho, é analisado como foram comunicados o chamado “desastre” de Curalaba e a morte do governador Martín Oñez de Loyola, em mãos indígenas em 1598. Por meio de um mapa de 1610, que pretendeu representar o desastre e a consequente revolta indígena, tenta-se evidenciar os problemas de comunicação e informação do Chile no início do século. Get PDFDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro TecnologicoTestes de abrasão empregando as técnicas de avaliação visual-PEI, rugosidade e reflexão da luz, foram realizados com o propósito de investigar os efeitos do tamanho e da fração volumétrica de uma fase de reforço, na porosidade e no mecanismo de desgaste abrasivo de vidrados cerâmicos. Com esta finalidade utilizou-se o conceito de projeto microestrutural, elaborado a partir de critérios quantitativos, relacionando a fase de reforço e o comportamento ao desgaste abrasivo a três corpos. Observou-se que a resistência ao desgaste aumenta quando ambos, tamanho e livre caminho médio da fase de reforço diminuem e sua fração volumétrica aumenta. Foi observado, também, que uma redução da porosidade ocorre quando o tamanho e a fração volumétrica da fase de reforço diminui. A observação da superfície abrasionada mostrou que o mecanismo de desgaste produzido pelo método de ensaio PEI, é caracterizado por fraturas múltiplas do tipo concoidal, originadas na matriz vítrea, as quais podem ser estudadas a partir de modelo de indentação para materiais frágeis
Mining e-mail content for author identification forensics
No full textWe describe an investigation into e-mail content mining for author identification, or authorship attribution, for the purpose of forensic investigation. We focus our discussion on the ability to discriminate between authors for the case of both aggregated e-mail topics as well as across different email topics. An extended set of e-mail document features including structural characteristics and linguistic patterns were derived and, together with a Support Vector Machine learning algorithm, were used for mining the e-mail content. Experiments using a number of e-mail documents generated by different authors on a set of topics gave promising results for both aggregated and multi-topic author categorisation

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
