AI at Work: Automation, Distributed Cognition, and Cultural Embeddedness
This cross-disciplinary exploration delves into the multiple intersections between Artificial Intelligence (AI), work, and organization, mobilizing different research strands such as STS and Organization Theory, as well as the History of Science and Technology and Cultural Sociology. Matteo Pasquinelli proposes an exploration of theories of automation drawn from political economy and the history of science and technology, investigating their explanatory accounts of technological innovation. As argued by the author, these theories provide important foundations for unveiling the socio-technical genealogy of current forms of AI as well as the specific logic of automation that they follow. Cristina Alaimo continues by illustrating the perspective of distributed social cognition for the study of AI in organizational settings, crucial for abandoning the assumption that intelligence is solely an attribute of individuals or technologies. This second contribution invites an exploration of how, even in organizational environments characterized by the presence of AI, intelligence still appears as a collective capability. Finally, Alessandro Gandini stresses how the encounter between AI and society is primarily a cultural issue, proposing a critical discussion of its main implications. For the author, sociology should approach AI phenomenologically and critically, but it should also take advantage from the innovations that tools such as generative AI might bring

Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here
Bedrock and soil geochemistry influence the content of chemical elements in wild edible mushrooms (Morchella group) from South Italy (Sicily)
Chemical elements in the samples of wild edible mushrooms of the Morchellagroup collected from different unpolluted Sicilian sites was analyzed by the ICP-MS (method) to detect the content of their minerals and determine whether soil geology and geochemistry can influence the chemical composition in fungi. Results showed that the mushroom samples mainly contained a high concentration of K and P and a wide variety of minor and trace elements (V, Mo, Pb, Ce, Cs, Zr), including heavy metals. Statistical analysis showed that the mushrooms differed in their content of minor and trace elements based on the geological/geographic site of origin. Comparison with other studies showed differences in the content detected in the Sicilian morels with those collected from other geographical sites. Conversely, dif-ferent fungal species collected from similar geological sites in Sicily showed different patterns of accumulation of the elements confirming that bioconcentration in fungi is species- and site-dependent
La maturità di Alessandro Fei del Barbiere, in bilico tra Maniera e Riforma
This article studies the mature career of the Florentine painter Alessandro Fei del Barbiere (1537-1592), beginning with the rediscovery of the 'Ascension' altarpiece formerly in the Albizi Chapel in the destroyed church of San Pier Maggiore, Florence. Studying this painting and others recorded in 1584 by the biographer Raffaello Borghini, such as the two altarpieces for Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Madonna dell'Umiltà in Pistoia, the author reconstructs a body of works showing how in the 1580s Fei gradually went beyond the archaic style of his apprenticeship - he had been trained by Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio and Pierfrancesco Foschi, but was also marked by the Maniera of Vasari - evolving towards naturalism in both mimesis and pictorial handling. In Florence, his development partly parallels that of Santi di Tito and his circle, but Fei was also influenced by a probable sojourn during the early part of that decade in Rome, where he could have been inspired by Girolamo Muziano and the painters working for Pope Gregory XIII. Among other proposals, the author suggests that the artist was responsible for decorating the chancel of Fiesole Cathedral (c. 1584-1589), which consisted of an altarpiece, only rarely discussed by scholars, and a cycle of frescoes hitherto attributed to Nicodemo Ferrucci
Tra socialdemocrazie e Perestrojka. Le relazioni internazionali del Pci attraverso le carte di Alessandro Natta
This essay reconstructs the foreign policy of the Italian Communist Party during the four
years of Alessandro Natta’s secretariat (1984-1988) through largely original archival documentation,
from the Alessandro Natta Fonds of the Historical Archive of the Chamber of
Deputies. Natta’s papers are also cross-referenced with those kept in the PCI Archive at the
Gramsci Foundation. The author analyses the relationship that the PCI establishes with
Gorbachev’s Perestroika, Deng’s China, and European social democracies during the last
years of the Cold War

“Soluzioni bioclimatiche e di building automation per la riqualificazione energetica di un edificio residenziale in clima Mediterraneo” = “Bioclimatic and building automation solutions for the energy retrofit of a residential building in Mediterranean climate”
The aim of this work was to establish the efficacy and the management modes of passive solar components and high energy efficiency systems on a case study in Mediterranean area. The case study consists of the housing renovation of a terraced house characterized by orientation not congruent with the principles of bioclimatic architecture, situated in the apulian coastal area (Noicattaro, Italy, 41°02’00”N, 16°59’00”E, 50 m a.s.l.). In terms of energy retrofitting, the intervention consists mainly in: improving performance of the opaque and transparent envelope, insertion of two solar sunspaces oriented east and west, replacement of the gas-fired heat generator with an air-to-water heat pump, installation of a "canadian well" for free-cooling and installation of a solar thermal system for the production of domestic hot water (SDHW). It is also planned the installation of a photovoltaic system that would allow the achievement of the NZEB’s targets. The results of performed simulations with TRNSYS calculation code showed that, despite the orientation is not optimal, the solar sunspaces contribute appreciably to the reduction of winter energy requirements and that the performance can be significantly improved by a mechanical ventilation system controlled by a differential thermostat able to regulate the ventilation between the sunspaces and the building. However, the climatic conditions in summer time require the use of solar shading and proper ventilation of those solar sunspaces. The automatic control (Building Automation System, BAS) of the solar shadings can assure a significant reduction in the risk of overheating without limiting the use of sunspaces. The modeling of the plant subsystem has confirmed the possibility and the convenience of using heat generators and heating terminals undersized compared to typical calculation procedures, when combined with proper management mode controlled by a building automation system. This choice will increase the percentage of self-consumption covered by the photovoltaic system and the pursuit of NZEB standard, which will be the subject of future studie

Towards adaptive building automation systems, simulating occupant behaviors by means of an agent based approach
The recent international directives have introduced the "Nearly Zero Energy Building" standard in response to the high impact of buildings on energy consumptions and greenhouse gas emissions.
Most of the innovative strategies and technology solutions for reducing energy consumption in buildings are focused on energy efficiency of building-HVAC system. The interaction between occupants and the building-HVAC system is completely neglected, especially regarding the operating modes by occupants. In most cases, it causes a significant difference between the expected energy consumptions and the real ones during the exercise phase. Especially in buildings with high levels of thermal insulation and airtightness, occupant behavior may have a significant influence on energy consumption and on indoor comfort.
In this context, the aim of this research work is to evaluate the occupants' behavior impact on energy consumption and thermal comfort, in order to design building automation systems adaptable to occupants behaviors. In particular, unlike the common deterministic approach to simulate occupant behavior in buildings, this work presents a more realistic approach to simulate occupant behavior by means of a stochastic and agent-based model (ABM).
The case study regards the residential building context, where behavioral logic of occupants relating to the opening/closing of the windows and shading and to the activation of the cooling system in summer are implemented by TRNSYS software. The comparison between models where occupants are simulated in deterministic way and by means of ABM allows to evaluate the significant impacts of occupants on building performanc
