This article examines Sabina Berman’s chronicle/memoir La bobe, where the Mexican author interweaves intergenerational Jewish migration experiences through the relationships between three generations of women. The focus is on her approach to exile and cultural heritage. By introducing two key conceptual movements “erotic praxis” and “kinopoetics”, the article aims to transform the traditional understanding of displacement and migration. Drawing on Thomas Nail’s theoretical framework of kinetic materialism, it demonstrates how Berman’s work privileges movement as a generative principle. This is exemplified through her narrative style, which oscillates between tragic and comic perspectives, maintaining a productive tension. Ultimately, the article argues that Berman challenges traditional migration narratives by offering creative alternatives through comedy and a feminine logic, reframing exile as a vital, imaginative process. Beyond Berman, this approach articulates a new way of understanding interexilic and migratory relationships and poetics based on the paradigm of movement and eroticism. Chemical annotation of small and peptide-like molecules at the Protein Data Bank

    No full text
Over the past decade, the number of polymers and their complexes with small molecules in the Protein Data Bank archive (PDB) has continued to increase significantly. To support scientific advancements and ensure the best quality and completeness of the data files over the next 10 years and beyond, the Worldwide PDB partnership that manages the PDB archive is developing a new deposition and annotation system. This system focuses on efficient data capture across all supported experimental methods. The new deposition and annotation system is composed of four major modules that together support all of the processing requirements for a PDB entry. In this article, we describe one such module called the Chemical Component Annotation Tool. This tool uses information from both the Chemical Component Dictionary and Biologically Interesting molecule Reference Dictionary to aid in annotation. Benchmark studies have shown that the Chemical Component Annotation Tool provides significant improvements in processing efficiency and data quality.Peer reviewe

Breaking Down Microtubule Formation: Characterizing the Biochemical and Cellular Functions of the γ-Tubulin Ring Complex

    No full text
The γ-Tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC) is an essential regulator of the microtubule cytoskeleton. It is composed of\u3e30 individual proteins that include the major component, γ-tubulin, as well as γ-tubulin complex proteins 2-6 (GCP2-6), mitotic-spindle organizing proteins associated with a ring of γ-tubulin proteins 1 and 2 (MOZART, or MZT1 and MZT2), and an actin molecule. This ~2.2MDa assembly regulates microtubule dynamics by facilitating the nucleation of new microtubules, modulating microtubule minus-end dynamics by acting as a minus-end cap, and anchoring microtubules to specify their cellular localization. These three major activities of the γ-TuRC, nucleation, capping, and anchoring, contribute to the dynamic nature of individual microtubules and of larger microtubule networks that are critical for cellular activities, including cell motility, in trace have spurred biochemical and cellular characterization of its nucleation activity. However, it remains unclear how the remaining major γ-TuRC activities contribute to microtubule dynamics. In the first part of this thesis, I characterize the capping activity of the γ-TuRC. Using biochemical assays, I examine the association of recombinantly expressed and purified γ-TuRC at microtubule minus-ends either following a nucleation event, or on pre-formed microtubules. Using total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy, the dynamics of this association can be quantified in terms of the number of microtubules that are capped, and the length of time the cap persists at the minus-end under these two conditions. Additionally, I purified a recombinant γ-TuRC composed of GTP-binding deficient γ-tubulin in order to examine the GTP-binding dependency of the γ-TuRC\u27s capping activity. As opposed to the γ-TuRC\u27s nucleation activity, which is GTP-binding dependent, I found that the γ-TuRC\u27s capping activity is GTP-binding independent. By expressing GTP-binding deficient γ-tubulin in HeLa cells depleted of endogenous γ-tubulin protein, I characterized the role of the γ-TuRC\u27s capping activity in dividing cells. While cells expressing the GTP-binding γ-tubulin mutant could not form bipolar mitotic spindles and became arrested in mitosis, fixed- and live-cell imaging experiments showed that expression of this mutant rescued non-centrosomal microtubule formation, which was lost under γ-tubulin knockdown conditions. Together, these data suggest that the γ-TuRC\u27s capping activity is GTP-binding independent and plays a role in non-centrosomal microtubule formation during mitosis. In the second part of my thesis, I perform studies towards further characterizing the γ-TuRC. First, I use affinity-purification followed by mass spectrometry to characterize the composition of γ-TuRCs purified from a HeLa cell line overexpressing GFP-tagged γ-tubulin. Further mass spectrometry analysis identified interacting proteins that co-purified with γ-tubulin, some of which have a known function related to the microtubule cytoskeleton or cell division. Second, I performed cell biology experiments to examine how the composition of the γ-TuRC may affect its activities.Recent work has suggested that the N-terminal domains of GCP6, named the N-helical domains (NHD) and the belt domain, are needed to maintain the structural integrity of the γ-TuRC, and that without these domains, specific components of the complex are lost. Cells expressing these N-terminally truncated GCP6 constructs displayed partial γ-tubulin-containing complexes relative to cells expressing full-length GCP6. Furthermore, cells expressing GCP6 truncated of the NHDs and the belt domain showed loss of centrosomal GCP6 and γ-tubulin specifically during mitosis, while their centrosomal localization persisted during interphase. Together, these data suggest that different components of the γ-TuRC may mediate the localization and anchoring of the γ-TuRC at specific cellular sites, such as the centrosome

Though the proverb states one to never judge a book by its cover, it is undeniable that the vi sual cover of publishing materials does make a significant impact on the purchasing decision. This chapter analyzes cannabis publication covers to reveal marketing techniques that have led to the positive reframing of cannabis commodities for public consumers. By creating a “base” imagery of a green cannabis fan leaf in the center of a white background, publishers encourage consumers to re-structure negative associations with illegal cannabis markets for a clean and refreshed ecological presentation. Cannabis covers post-prohibition simultaneously encourage new associations with legal cannabis markets, while also concealing current socio-economic challenges stemming from the legal industry of cannabis in Colorado. Eighteen months between 2015-2020 were spent conducting ethnographic fieldwork about cannabis budtenders and wage labor issues in Denver, Colorado (Berman, 2021). During this time, I developed a collection of cannabis books. As a visual learner, I scanned the pages, authors’ names, pictures, and page numbers to absorb the information relayed back by these elements. Was the cover bright pink? Did the author have a unique name? Was the book unusually heavy or long? I found myself getting confused between sources because of the similarities of the book covers, which sharply contrasted with the diversity of budtenders and strains that I saw in the cannabis industry. I said to colleagues, “Do you know how difficult it is to do cannabis research when all the books look exactly alike, not just sort of alike, but exactly alike?” (p. 211)

A window into the Early to mid-Cretaceous infrastructure of the Yukon-Tanana terrane recorded in multi-stage garnet of west-central Yukon, Canada

    No full text
Amphibolite facies metasedimentary schists within the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the northern Canadian Cordillera reveal a two-stage, polymetamorphic garnet growth history. In situ U-Th-Pb Sensitive High Resolution Ion Microprobe dating of monazite provide timing constraints for the late stages of garnet growth, deformation and subsequent decompression. Distinct textural and chemical growth zoning domains, separated by a large chemical discontinuity, reveal two stages of garnet growth characterized in part by: (i) a syn-kinematic, inclusion-rich stage-1 garnet core; and (ii) an inclusion-poor, stage-2 garnet rim that crystallized with syn- to post-kinematic staurolite and kyanite. Phase equilibria modelling of garnet molar and compositional isopleths suggest stage-1 garnet growth initiated at ~600 °C, 8 kbar along a clockwise P-T path. Growth of the compositionally distinct, grossular-rich, pyrope-poor inner portion of the stage-2 overgrowth is interpreted to have initiated at higher pressure and/or lower temperature than the stage-1 core along a separate P-T loop, culminating at peak P-T conditions of ~650-680 °C and 9 kbar. Stage-2 metamorphism and the waning development of a composite transposition foliation ( ST) are dated at c. 118 Ma from monazite aligned parallel to ST, and inclusions in syn- to post- ST staurolite and kyanite. Slightly younger ages ( c. 112 Ma) are obtained from Y-rich monazite that occurs within resorbed areas of both stage-1 and stage-2 garnet, together with retrograde staurolite and plagioclase. The younger ages obtained from these texturally and chemically distinct grains are interpreted, with the aid of phase equilibria calculations, to date the growth of monazite from the breakdown of garnet during decompression at c. 112 Ma. Evidence for continued near-isothermal decompression is provided by the presence of retrograde sillimanite, and cordierite after staurolite, which indicates decompression below ~4-5 kbar prior to cooling below ~550 °C. As most other parts of the Yukon-Tanana terrane were exhumed to upper crustal levels in the Early Jurassic, these data suggest this domain represents a tectonic window revealing a much younger, high-grade tectono-metamorphic core (infrastructure) within the northern Cordilleran orogen. This window may be akin to extensional core complexes identified in east-central Alaska and in the southeastern Canadian Cordillera. The theater’s reflection on the work Molière performed by Ma Zhenghong

    No full text
This work aims to address the interpretation that the Chinese director Ma Zhenghong made in 2008, in Beijing, of the work of the Mexican author Sabina Berman Molière, a text that raises the conflictive relationship between the two masks of theater, comedy and tragedy, embodied in the figures of two playwrights of the French classical theatre, Molière, who gives the play its title, and Racine, the greatest exponent of the tragic style in 17th century France. My purpose is to establish a reflection on the view that a Chinese theatrical creator has of a Western theme, which, however, is usually seen as universal and, in parallel, to study the particular model of its staging, as well as its possible impact on the Pekinese theatrical context of the time

Insilio, traducción y (auto)censura: el caso Mercedes Rein

    No full text
This article explores the relationship between translation practices and the publishing field regarding the mechanisms of cultural censorship imposed during the Uruguayan civil-military dictatorship (1973-1985). From previous work by Berman (1989), Pym (1990), Chesterman (2006) and Munday (2013; 2014) we propose a microhistorical approach that analyses the intellectual trajectory of writer, translator and playwright Mercedes Rein (1930-2006) before and during the insilio [the equivalent of the exile for those who did not have to emigrate]. Through this temporal framework, we will compare the particularities of the translator’s agency and the published corpus (both as translator and as author) during these two periods, highlighting the effects of official censorship and self-censorship on the visibility and the concealment of her authorial identity. Furthermore, it is important to recover the subsistence function that literary translation took on in this context and the cooperation that Rein established with exiled agents in foreign markets. Based on these considerations, the article proposes to enhance and supplement the historiographical discourse that questions the idea of “cultural blackout” (based on evidence from different fields and disciplines), with inputs from the field of translation and the Uruguayan publishing field.
