This research is aimed at improving the students’ speaking ability of XI IS 2 of
SMA N 1 Kasihan in in the academic year of 2011/2012. This research is an action
research.
The research followed the principles of the action research procedures. It tried to
find the actual problems in the field and tried to solve them collaboratively. The
researcher worked together with other research team members, such as the English teacher
and the students of class XI IS 2 in SMA N 1 Kasihan. The research process consists of
identifying the field problems, selecting the field problems based on the feasibility to be
solved, and conducting objective analysis. In planning, implementing, observing, and
reflecting the actions, the researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher and
the students of class XI IS 2 of SMA N 1 Kasihan. The data were collected through
observing the English teaching-learning process and interviewing the. The data in the
form of scores were also collected by conducting the pre-test and post-test activities.
The researcher and other research team members found three problems which
were feasible to solve. The problems were the lack of facilities in presenting the materials,
the lack of input activities in speaking and the lack of media to motivate the students in
speaking. The actions to solve the problem were using Power Point program through a
viewer to present the material, applying listening activity in speaking lesson and using
pictures to help the students to speak. Those actions gave positive results. Firstly, the
students were more motivated and more interested in involving the English lesson.
Secondly, the students’ fluency, pronunciation, accuracy and vocabulary were increasing.
Thirdly, it was easier for the students to perform speaking by using pictures. The students’
average pre-test score was 5.64 while the students’ average post-test score was 7.35. The
result shows that there was an improvement of the students’ speaking ability. It can be
concluded that using pictures can effectively improve the students’ speaking ability

In search of Achmad Sukarno
For somebody who does not exist Achmad (sometimes spelled Achmed, Ahmad, and Ahmed) Sukarno certainly gets around. Contributing to stress levels amongst academics, Achmad has popped up frequently in the essays of successive generations of undergraduates. This materialization is not surprising given his frequent and longstanding appearances in authoritative reference sources such as encyclopaedias, biographical dictionaries and the like. He appears for instance in the 1994 edition of the Chambers Dictionary of World History. More recently (and naturally) he also graces cyberspace with his ethereal presence, abundantly so in fact. Undoubtedly the internet is the usual source of his undergraduate essay manifestations in recent years. Achmad also appears in some older books about Indonesia. For example, he features in the index (though not the text) of that old stalwart Louis Fischer’s The Story of Indonesia, published in 1959, a book that introduced many people to Indonesia in the 1960s. Similarly Achmad appears in the index to Deliar Noer, The Modernist Muslim Movement in Indonesia, published in 1973. He also appears in Brian Crozier’s Southeast Asia in Turmoil, published in 1965, prompting criticism from Harry Benda when he reviewed it in Pacific Affairs the following year. Indonesia specialists, such as Benda, who deplored the addition of Achmad to Sukarno, probably expected the practice would eventually wither away. Surely the sources in which Achmad appears would gradually gather layers of dust on library shelves as successive generations of students reached for the newer publications from which, Benda and others had banished him. But far from fading away, Achmad seems to be experiencing resurgence. There he is in John Pilger’s The New Rulers of the World, published in 2002. He takes a bow in The Complete Idiot’s Guide to World Conflicts, also published in 2002. He also appears in Barbara Kellerman, Bad Leadership: What it is, how it happens, why it matters, published in 2004. More disturbingly for the Achmad deplorers he also appears in Zachary Abuza’s Militant Islam in Southeast Asia (2003), Robert Hefner’s Civil Islam: Muslims and Democratization in Indonesia (2000), and even more recently in W. Roger Louis, The Oxford History of the Twentieth Century (2006). And recently too Achmad has received the seal of approval from the NSW Board of Studies, which has placed Achmad Sukarno in the current NSW Modern History Syllabus, approved in July 2004. In the 999 syllabus he was plain old Sukarno. Like it or not it seems we are stuck with Achmad. In this paper I want to look at three questions.
• Where did the Achmad addition to Sukarno originate?
• Is it possible that Achmad really is Sukarno’s other name?
• Does it matter

Atlas of wooden furniture industry in Jepara, Indonesia
In this document, we study the industrial district of Jepara, Indonesia. It is specialised in furniture production, for the Indonesian consumption, as well as for worldwide exports. We summarize the main features of the dynamics of the firms involved in the Jepara industrial complex with a quantitative analysis of flows among them, and between them and markets elsewhere. A specific method of spatial analysis has been designed, and merged with other existing methods for the analysis of forest production networks and social networks. This method allows to take in account and to accurately assess the number of very small workshops that can not be evaluated by classical methods. We demonstrate that the extent of wood industry and activities is considerably underestimated by both the official statistics and the existing literature about Jepara. We present the results through synthesis maps. A total of 15 271 units of production have been identified, employing approximately 170 000 workers in Jepara. The activity generates creates a considerable revenue: between 11 900 to 12 300 billions Rp/year of added value (about 1 billion Euros/year), that is to say between 70 to 78 million Rp/worker/year. The district of Jepara consumes between 1.5 to 2.2 millions m3/year or round wood, and in other words, we found that the use of around 9 m3 of round wood, sustain 1 fulltime employee per year. The organisation of the production is typical of an industrial district, with a high level of intertwined relationships and sub-contracting between the production unites, a high specialisation of them, and a prevalence of the small and very small units in various steps of the production, compared to the bigger integrated units.Indonesia, Java, furniture, timber, industrial district, production network, manufacturing cluster, flexible specialisation, SME, teak, trade
