Catching and rearing postlarval cleaner shrimp for the aquarium trade: results from a WorldFish Center project in Solomon Islands

Between 1999 and 2003, the WorldFish Center in Solomon Islands conducted research into the feasibility of a new fishery based on the capture and culture of postlarval coral reef fish for the live fish trade. The work was carried out in two phases: a research phase from late 1999 to the end of 2002; and a “finetuning” phase in 2003. Most of the species were of value to the marine aquarium trade, with very few live reef food fish recorded. The most valuable ornamentals were the banded cleaner shrimp, Stenopus species. Cleaner shrimp were harvested using crest nets, the method being modified with the addition of a solid, water-retaining cod-end designed to increase survival at capture. Grow-out techniques were improved by rearing the shrimp separately in jars to prevent aggression. The jars were painted black to protect the shrimp from sunlight. An economic model using experimental catch data and farm gate prices indicates that the fishery based on shrimp, supplemented with small numbers of lobster and fish is economically viable. The next step will be setting up a demonstration farm in a village in the Western Province of Solomon Islands.Aquarium culture, Juveniles, Catch culture, Shrimp fisheries, Catch/effort, Solomon I., Stenopus

    PENGGUNAAN METAFORA DALAM LAYLA MAJNUN

The study of the metaphor in a literary work can be used to find out the author’s creativity in utilizing words to concretize an abstraction through the use of metaphor. Because every human being is essentially unique, each author is assumed to have his/her own style in creating metaphors. The two questions in this article are: 1) how is the typical form of metaphor in Layla Majnun as the embodiment of creativity? ; 2) what is the function of the use of metaphor in Layla Majnun? Based on the analysis of data, a metaphor can be classified into a phrase, clause, and sentence. At the phrasal level, position or location of the image element can be either in the beginning or in the end of the topic. Meanwhile, at the level of the clause and sentence, image elements are always in the end of the topic. This latter sequence is possible because the clause part of the “explained or described” is filled syntactically by the predicate. The predicate in Indonesian is predominantly located after the subject. The study of the use of metaphor in Layla Majnun leads to the conclusion that the creativity of the author in creating metaphor reflected on how human (the author) sees the world. Because human perception is inseparable from the environment in which the author lives, develops, and interacts, the use of metaphor in Layla Majnun reflects an overview of the social life, values of culture, and customs of the Arab people at that time

Karuwal Rl, Suharsono, Tjahjoleksono A, Hanif N. 2017. Physiological responses of some local cowpea from Southwest Maluku (Indonesia) varieties to drought stress. Biodiversitas 18: 1294-1299. The aim of this study was to analyze the physiological responses of some local cowpea from Southwest Maluku (Indonesia) varieties to drought stress. The physiological responses were analyzed by measuring plant height, number of leaves, relative water content (RWC), and chlorophyll content using Anova and were continued with Duncan test at 5% significance level. Results of this research showed that the varieties and drought stress in the form of watering periods to affect to all variables except plant height. Physiological responses showed that at every ten days watering periods, the crimson varieties gives the highest plant height (33.85 cm), the brown varieties gives the highest number of leaves (30), the dark brown varieties have the highest RWC (88.675%), and the highest content of chlorophyll a (0.5088 mg/L), chlorophyll b (1.595 mg/L), and total chlorophyll (1.5095 mg/L) are found in white varieties. The supply of water at every ten days is the optimum time of drought stress in cowpea. Further research will be needed on the responses of the other variables for screening, selection, then multi-location trials to obtain tolerant local cowpea varieties to drought.</jats:p

Exploiting microorganism become one of alternatives in using biofertilizer. Aspergillus niger represent one of examples of fungi which can be used as an agent of biofertilizer. The aim of this research was to produce a good quality of A. niger biofertilizer inoculum for field application using agricultural organic waste as a carrier. The research activities were carried out in two stages. First stage was screened the 5 agricultural organic wastes, namely corn cob, rice straw, banana stem, organic market waste, and sorghum stem as fungal growth medium. Split corn was used as a control treatment. Spore and propagule numbers were used as parameter measured for screening activities. Observation was conducted in 20, 40 and 60 days after inoculation. Second stage of the research was to analyze the quality of dried inoculum produced from the first stage of experiment that was kept in 0, 1, 2 and 3 months at room temperature. The parameter measured were spore and propagule numbers, root colonization, and growth respon. Rice and maize were used as tested crops. The A. niger grew very well in the all organic wastes tested. Amoung the 5 wastes tested, organic market waste was the best medium followed by sorghum stem, banana stem, corn cob and rice straw. The propagule obtained was higher than the spore number. The heating and the grinding treatments reduced the quality of inoculum. Reduction of spore number was 4,3%/g media and the propagule was 15,0%/g media compared with the control treatment. This indicated that viability of spore was better than miselia. Based on the numbers of spore and propagule productions indicated that inoculum quality obtained from organic market waste was better than the control treatment (split corn). The 3 months storage treatment had no effect on survival of the fungi obtained from organic market waste. Similarly, physical characteristic of carrier media. However, the 3 months storage treatment reduced the capability of the fungi in colonizing and improving plant growth. Similar results were also observed in the inoculum produced from split corn as a control treatment. The effect of organic matter derived from organic market waste was different from that split corn. Organic market waste increased the growth of rice and maize crops, whereas split corn reduce the growth of both crops
