Risk Analysis of Farmers and Rice Milling Businesses: A Study on The Rice Supply Chain in Yogyakarta
Background: Rice is a staple food consumed by more than 98% of households in Indonesia. However, risks along the supply chain create an imbalance between high rice consumption and domestic rice production. Purpose: In response to this circumstance, this study aims to identify the risks in the upstream sector of the rice supply chain involving rice farmers and millers, and then to develop a mitigation strategy for those priority risks. Design/Methodology/Approach: A case study approach was adopted, and primary data were collected through in-depth interviews and questionnaires from farmers and rice millers in five different districts of Yogyakarta Province. Furthermore, the Failure Mode, Effect, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) method was utilized for risk analysis. Findings/result: The results showed that there are 19 types of risks encountered by farmers, where biological risks (weeds, pests, and diseases) are a priority risk with a moderate criticality level. In addition, the rice millers faced 17 types of risks, with the priority risk being the uncertainty of the raw material supply (rice and grain) with a high criticality level. Conclusion: To manage biological risks, we suggest that farmers utilize applied technology and optimize extension management to improve quality and avoid the risk of decreasing crop yields. For rice millers, we propose the use of diversified supply sources, inventory management, and make-to-order production systems to reduce risk intensity and increase production effectiveness. Originality/value (State of the art): This study is relevant to current affairs considering that rice production has an impact on national food security and that the risk of the rice supply chain is still inevitable. This study cascades the key risks in the rice supply chain, specifically in Yogyakarta, and assists relevant stakeholders in effectively addressing these risks.

An Analysis of NTMs Measures on Indonesian Banana and Pineapple Exports in Selected Asean, East Asian, and Middle Eastern Countries
Background: Increasing Indonesia\u27s banana and pineapple exports is part of an effort to promote fresh and processed fruit. Banana and pineapple exports face several challenges, especially in conforming to food safety requirements in destination markets. Purpose: The objective is to describe Non-tariff measures (NTMs) measures (i.e.SPS and TBT), and their impact on Indonesian banana and pineapple exports. Design/methodology/approach: In this study, we analyze the effect and impact of NTMs measures using the gravity model by including the variable of NTMs measures. Findings/Result: This analysis finds that SPS measures have a trade-promoting impact on Indonesian banana and pineapple exports in export markets. In contrast, TBT measures have a trade-impeding impact on Indonesian banana and pineapple export. Ad valorem tariff-equivalents (AVEs) of SPS measures are higher than those of TBT. The AVEs of SPS measures are relatively higher than import tariffs in pineapple export markets. Food safety policies (i.e. SPS and TBT) are still more protective in the export markets of both commodities.Conclusion: Increasing Indonesia\u27s banana and pineapple exports requires alignment and adjustment of NTMs in export markets. Increasing farmer partnerships with similar large companies to implement good production practices will help accelerate compliance with standards to improve market access.Originality/value (State of the art): This study specifically examines the impact of non-tariff measures on Indonesian bananas and pineapples in export markets and considers the magnitude of market barriers down to the 6-digit HS code level by measuring the tariff equivalent of NTMs barriers.

Gender-Responsive Strategies in Highland Farming: Evaluating Women Empowerment in Indonesia
Background: Women farmers in regions such as Cianjur and Tabanan, Indonesia, consistently face systemic challenges, including limited access to resources and decision-making power, which can hinder their productivity and well-being.Purpose: This study evaluates innovative strategies to enhance women\u27s empowerment in highland agriculture by focusing on empowering women to play a more significant role.Design/methodology/approach: This study employed a combined methodological approach, utilizing the women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) framework and integrating the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to evaluate the empowerment factors. This study utilized five domains for AHP-WEAI: production decisions, resource access, income control, leadership participation, and time allocation. Findings/Results: This study identified key factors that significantly influence women’s empowerment, such as access to credit and leadership roles. Economic factors (credit/land access) dominated in Cianjur (AHP weight: 0.45), while social factors (leadership roles) were significant in Tabanan (0.40). Conclusion: This study identifies key factors influencing women\u27s empowerment in Cianjur and Tabanan, using the AHP-WEAI framework. These findings highlight the need for region-specific strategies, such as economic interventions in Cianjur and social capital building in Tabanan, to enhance women\u27s roles in highland farming systems.Originality/value (State of the art): This study offers a novel approach to quantify domain-specific empowerment drivers in Indonesian highlands using AHP-WEAI integration.

Trade Barriers and Food Security: A Systematic Review of Import Tariff Effects in Developing Countries
Background: Import tariffs are widely used in developing countries to manage food systems; however, their effects on the core pillars of food security under real-world shocks and institutional constraints remain debated.Purpose: To evaluate how higher versus lower (including zero) import tariffs on major foods influence food availability, access, and stability, and to draw implications for diet quality (utilization).Design/methodology/approach: A PRISMA-guided systematic literature review of Scopus-indexed, English-language journal articles (2020–2024). Twenty-five studies that met the predefined quality and relevance criteria were synthesized using a theory-driven narrative approach that describes how tariff settings shape trade and price channels, and, in turn, food security outcomes. Export restrictions are treated as exogenous stability shocks.Findings/Results: Lower tariffs generally expand market-level availability, reduce consumer prices, and dampen routine domestic volatility through import diversification. Benefits are uneven without producer upgrading and fragile during global shocks. Utilization improves when barriers to nutrient-dense foods are removed; however, openness can accelerate ultra-processed food penetration without strong nutrition governance. The effects are conditioned by logistics performance, domestic competition and pass-through, governance quality, policy space, and commodity mix.Conclusion: The most food-secure configuration is calibrated openness: liberalize where social welfare rises, pair reforms with farmer adjustment and productivity support, strengthen logistics and competition, preserve nutrition policy space, and operate a rules-based stability architecture.Originality/value (State of the art): Provides an up-to-date, developing-country synthesis that centers import tariffs, integrates utilization and governance into the trade–food security nexus, and translates evidence into operational policy guidance.

Adaptation Strategies and Constraints To Climate Change Among Clove Farmers in East Kolaka
Background: Climate change has become a major challenge for agriculture in tropical regions, particularly in East Kolaka, Southeast Sulawesi, where cloves are a vital economic crop. Gaining insight into how farmers respond to and adapt to these climatic shifts is essential for formulating effective and sustainable climate resilience policies.Purpose: This study explores the range of adaptation strategies employed by clove farmers, identifies the socioeconomic factors shaping their strategic choices, analyzes the interconnections among different adaptation measures, and evaluates the primary barriers that constrain adaptation in East Kolaka.Design/Methodology/Approach: Primary data were obtained from 138 clove farmers in Anggaloosi Village, East Kolaka Regency, Indonesia. Descriptive statistical techniques were applied to describe the adaptation strategies used. The multivariate probit model was utilized to determine the influencing factors and interrelations among the strategies, while the Constraint Facing Index (CFI) method was used to assess the dominant obstacles faced by farmers in adapting to climate change.Findings/Results: Findings revealed that 80.43% of farmers participated in training and extension programs, 73.19% utilized climate information, 71.01% implemented irrigation improvements, and 65.94% diversified their income sources. Access to extension services emerged as the most significant determinant of adaptation behavior. Several adaptation strategies were found to be complementary or substitutive. The main challenge faced by clove farmers at the research location is environmental obstacles, namely, unpredictable changes in weather patterns, with a score of 305 at a very high level of obstacles.Conclusion: The study highlights that successful adaptation among clove farmers largely relies on increased access to agricultural extension, climate-related information, and financial assistance. Originality/value (State of the art): This study adds to the scarce body of empirical evidence concerning climate change adaptation in perennial crops such as cloves in Indonesia. By combining the Multivariate Probit and Constraint Facing Index (CFI) approaches, this study provides an integrated analysis of both the determinants and barriers to adaptation, generating valuable implications for policymakers and practitioners in designing localized and inclusive climate adaptation strategies.

The Multiplier Effect and Dynamic System Modeling For Sustainable Drinking Water Resource Management (Case Study of Perumda Tirta Pakuan, Bogor City)
Background: Clean water is an essential basic need for the community, so its management must be carried out sustainably. Purpose: This study aimed to quantify the multiplier effect on economic, social, and environmental aspects of the existence of Perumda Tirta Pakuan Kota Bogor for the period 2025-2029 and project the availability of managed drinking water. Design/methodology/approach: The data used in this study are secondary data from both internal sources at Perumda Tirta Pakuan (annual reports and the company website) and macroeconomic data for the city of Bogor obtained from various sources relevant to the purpose of the study. Data analysis in this study used a systems approach, namely a hard system methodology, namely dynamic systems. The dynamic systems approach was used through the stages of input-output diagrams, causal loop diagrams (CLD), and stock flow diagrams (SFD) using Vensim PLE Version 10.3.2 software. Then the model\u27s prediction results were verified and validated through face validity in two FGDs involving experts and practitioners from drinking water management, resulting in a model that is scientifically accountable and well-tested.Finding/Result: The results of the study show that clean water production capacity remains stable at 2.59 m³ per second, whereas usage increases from 1.86 m³ per second in 2025 to 2.26 m³ per second in 2029. Thus, there is a surplus of 0.33 m³ per second or around 10.4 million m³ per year in 2029, which opens up opportunities to expand customer service coverage. This surplus not only guarantees the availability of clean water for the community, but also strengthens the multiplier effect that drives economic productivity and increases the purchasing power of the people of Bogor City. Conclusion: These findings confirm that dynamic system-based planning is important not only to maintain the continuity of clean water supply, but also to maximize its contribution to comprehensive regional development. Originality/value (State of the art): This study provides an up-to-date review by integrating sustainability analysis (triple bottom line) into a dynamic system model for water utilities. Its originality lies in its ability to measure the indirect impacts (multiplier effects) of clean water services on economic productivity and public purchasing power, which are often overlooked in company performance assessments. The findings regarding surpluses that create opportunities for service expansion are practical contributions that policymakers can directly act upon, specifically in Bogor City and more generally in Indonesia.

Comparison of Plywood Export Competitiveness of Indonesia and China in The Asean+3 Market and Its Influencing Factors
Background: Indonesia and China are the world\u27s major exporters of plywood. ASEAN+3 is one of the plywood importing regions with a share of 20% so it is one of the plywood export destinations. Purpose: This has led to competition between the two countries in the plywood trade, especially the ASEAN+3 region. This study aims to analyze the comparison of Indonesia and China\u27s plywood export competitiveness in the ASEAN+3 market and the factors that influence it. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses ten ASEAN+3 countries in the 2015-2022 period using the RCA, EPD, X-Model, and regression analysis methods. Findings/Result: The results of the RCA value of Indonesia and China are strongly competitive in the majority of ASEAN+3 countries. EPD shows Indonesia\u27s plywood rising star position in seven countries and China\u27s plywood rising star in only four countries. The X-Model method shows Brunei, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam have the potential to be optimistic markets for the development of Indonesian plywood exports, while Chinese plywood exports have the same potential in Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Conclusion: It is concluded that Indonesia\u27s plywood competitiveness is better than China\u27s. Factors affecting Indonesia\u27s plywood export volume are real GDP, population, export price, RCA value, and real exchange rate of the importing country.Originality/value (State of the art): Therefore, this study recommends several strategies such as market strengthening through certification and improving the quality of Indonesian plywood.

Dynamics of Competitiveness and Determinants of Indonesian Cocoa Exports in The Global Market
Background: Cocoa is a strategic Indonesian plantation commodity that faces challenges in productivity, quality, and global competitiveness, despite being the world\u27s third-largest producer.Purpose: This study aims to analyze the dynamics of Indonesia\u27s cocoa competitiveness and the determinants of cocoa exports in the global market.Design/methodology/approach: This study used secondary data from the BPS, UN Comtrade, FAO, World Bank, and Bank Indonesia. The analysis includes the Trade Specialization Index (ISP), Export Product Dynamics (EPD) to measure the market position, and the Error Correction Model (ECM) to analyze the determinants of exports in the short and long term.Findings/Results: ISP shows Indonesia as a net exporter with an average value of 0.614 and relatively good strength. The EPD classifies the top destination countries of Malaysia, China, the Philippines and India as Rising Stars, indicating strong growth potential. The ECM results show that production, productivity, price, exchange rate, destination countries’ GDP, RCA, and ECI have a significant effect on exports in the long run, emphasizing the role of structural factors. Meanwhile, in the short term, the effect is inconsistent because of market volatility and structural limitations.Conclusion: The findings imply that improving productivity, enhancing quality standards, and strengthening the downstream cocoa industry are crucial for increasing Indonesia’s export competitiveness. These efforts can enhance the country’s comparative advantage and economic complexity, thereby supporting sustainable export growth in the global market.Originality/value (state of the art): The integration of ISP and EPD analyses with export determinants using ECM provides a comprehensive overview and practical policy recommendations for the sustainability of cocoa exports.

Supply Chain Analysis of Nutmeg in North Maluku Province
Background: North Maluku has been known worldwide as a nutmeg-producing area in Indonesia since the fifteenth century. The quality and potential aflatoxin issues that have become global issues certainly have an impact on the price of national nutmeg and North Maluku. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to analyze the supply chain and marketing margins by looking at the efficiency of nutmeg marketing in North Maluku. Design/methodology/approach: Using qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis. Determination of samples by purposive side and snowball sampling. Respondents numbered 110 people consisting of 100 farmers and 10 traders. Descriptive data processing, mathematical calculations of marketing margins, farmers\u27 share, profit-to-cost ratios, and marketing efficiency. Findings/Result: The results of the study indicate that the nutmeg supply chain network in North Maluku has five marketing channels, many actors involved, and unstable prices so farmers\u27 income is low as shown by the marketing margins and efficiency of more than < 50% for marketing dry nutmeg and dry mace. Marketing of nutmeg in marketing channel III, marketing margin of Rp 0 with Eps 55.189%. In marketing channel V, the margin is Rp 0 with Eps 68.112%. The marketing margin of mace in marketing channel III is Rp 0 with Eps 78.243%. The marketing margin of mace in marketing channel V is Rp 0 with Eps 60.061%. Marketing channels of nutmeg I, II, III, and IV are inefficient, and marketing of mace I, II, and IV is inefficient because Eps > 50%.Conclusion: Based on the analysis of profitable nutmeg marketing efficiency in channels III and V for marketing dry nutmeg seeds and channels III and V for marketing mace.Originality/value (State of the art): This study explains that supply chain analysis has a positive impact on increasing farmer income with farmer decision-making to market their crops directly without going through collectors. Marketing efficiency can be achieved if there are few actors involved, low marketing costs, and high farmers\u27 share.

Development Strategy For a Sustainable Palm Sugar Cooperative Business Model in Sukabumi Regency
Background: The Binekas Cooperative, a palm sugar producer cooperative in the Sukabumi Regency, faces an increasing demand for sustainable products that require enhanced economic, environmental, and social performance.Purpose: This study aims to identify cooperative and smallholder profiles, existing business models, and internal and external factors, and formulate strategies for developing a sustainable cooperative business model.Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and literature reviews, from May to August 2024. Analytical methods include situational analysis, Circular Business Model Canvas (CBMC), SOAR analysis (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results), IFAS-EFAS, and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP).Findings/Result: The study found that the Binekas Cooperative has a simple organizational structure with strong community roots. Internal and external factors were mapped using CBMC and SOAR to generate four strategic options: expansion of capital access, green productivity optimization, business process standardization, and product diversification through digitalization. Using AHP, the top strategic priority identified was expanding access to capital through inclusive partnerships with member farmers.Conclusion: The cooperative\u27s priority strategy is to expand capital access by strengthening inclusive partnerships with smallholders, who play a key role in governance, and developing a strong, dynamic organizational structure.Originality/value (State of the art): This study shows that the CBMC framework can encourage cooperatives to be adaptive by involving stakeholders under sustainability principles, strengthening governance, enhancing economic activities through social capital within communities, and promoting environmentally friendly production processes.
