    Strategy For Strengthening Gili Matra Marine Tourism Park Management Through an Institutional Economic Approach

    Background: Gili Matra Marine Tourism Park (GMMTP) has the potential for marine ecosystems and high economic value through tourism; however, it has not been managed sustainably. Coral reef damage and institutional irregularities are the primary challenges.Purpose: This study aimed to formulate a strategy to strengthen GMMTP management by using a community-based institutional economic approach that considers ecological and socioeconomic aspects.Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative approach combining the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) for the value of existing benefits, Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) for the basic value of service costs, and Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) for mapping problems and institutional strategies.Finding/Results: The PES value was set at IDR 333,062/person/visit, and the total WTP reaches IDR 60.5 billion/year. The main problem is institutional disagreement between government parties. Main strategies: Additional budgets and supervisory personnel.Conclusion: The application of an institutional economic approach has been proven to support the sustainable management of conservation areas with a scientific basis for financing policies through PES.Originality/value (State of the art): This study fills this gap by integrating ecosystem service valuation and institutional strategies based on economic data, which have not been widely applied in marine conservation areas in Indonesia.     Charting Sustainability: Triple Bottom Line (TBL) Analysis in The Palm Oil Supply Chain Landscape

    Background: The industrial sector depends on a sustainable supply chain, which requires an organization to integrate (trade off) social, technological, economic, and environmental factors. One industry that applies the triple bottom line concept is palm oil. The palm oil industry is believed to have two drawbacks: harm to the environment, and social welfare. Sustainable supply chains have the potential to increase social welfare, reduce environmental impact, and increase profitability.  Purpose:  This study aims to enhance the understanding and implementation of sustainability in the palm oil supply  chain through three key objectives: (1) mapping current sustainability practices and performance across all supply chain actors; (2) analyzing limitations and inconsistencies in existing sustainability measurement methods, particularly in addressing the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) dimensions; and (3) developing standardized, practical, and theoretically grounded Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to support consistent and transparent sustainability evaluation. Design/methodology/approach: The Matrix of Crossed Impact Multiplications Applied to a Classification (MICMAC) method was employed. This approach makes the strength of the correlation between the variables and secret to a more methodical and targeted solution more evident. Data were collected through surveys and in-depth interviews with 16 respondents, including managers, sustainability officers, and operational staff, across the palm oil supply chain. The research was conducted between August and December 2023 in North Sumatra, Indonesia, specifically in PTPN III and the Sei Mangkei Special Economic Zone (KEK Sei Mangkei).Conclusion: Based on the Matrix of Direct Influences (MDI) and the Matrix of Indirect Influences (MII), important variables significantly affect other variables. A MICMAC analysis was conducted to determine the critical elements in the sustainability of the palm oil industry supply chain. This analysis serves as the basis for the variables of industrial productivity, financial performance, access to price information, level of industry employee education, and availability of infrastructure.Originality/value (State of the art):  This study employs the Matrix of Crossed Impact Multiplications Applied to a Classification (MICMAC) method to identify key triple bottom-line indicators for implementing sustainable supply chains.     Enhancing Farmers\u27 Insurance Literacy: Key To Improving AUTP Accessibility in Aceh Province

    Background: Insurance literacy is crucial in improving farmers\u27 access to insurance. Lack of understanding of insurance products and inability to process information hinder farmers from making the right decisions, resulting in low insurance utilization.Purpose: This research aims to (1) analyze farmers\u27 insurance literacy levels and influencing factors and (2) analyze the effect of farmer insurance literacy and other variables on the accessibility of AUTP.Design/methodology/approach: Data from 251 respondents, including those who accessed and did not access AUTP in Aceh Province. To elucidate the research objectives, an analysis of the level of insurance literacy was conducted using multiple regression analysis and an analysis of accessibility to AUTP using binary logistic regression.Findings/Result: The results show that the level of farmer insurance literacy is in the less literate category. The variables of age, education duration, and bank account ownership significantly affect farmer insurance literacy. The variables that affect AUTP accessibility are age, education duration, farm revenue, land ownership, farmer insurance literacy value, farmer group activity, perception of farm risk, insurance claim experience, and AUTP premiums. These results can describe the condition of farmer insurance literacy and AUTP access in other regions of Indonesia with similar farmer characteristics.Conclusion: Farmers\u27 insurance literacy has a significant impact on AUTP access. Therefore, the government and stakeholders need to conduct regular socialization and training to increase farmers\u27 knowledge and awareness of insurance so that more farmers can take advantage of the AUTP program.Originality/value (State of the art): This study focuses on farmer insurance literacy.     Value Chain Analysis of Island Mackerel (Rastrelliger faughni) in Selected Coastal Municipalities in Lagonoy Gulf, Philippines

    Background: Fisheries play a crucial role in food security and livelihoods in coastal communities. However, inefficient value chains hinder optimal economic returns for small-scale fishers. Analyzing the value chain of island mackerel (Rastrelliger faughni) in the Lagonoy Gulf helps to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.Purpose: This study aimed to assess the value chain of island mackerel in selected coastal municipalities around the Lagonoy Gulf, Philippines, to understand its structure, dynamics, and socioeconomic implications.Design/methodology/approach: This study employed a case study approach using primary data (surveys, interviews, focus groups with fishers, traders, and local officials) and secondary data. It involved a total of 114 respondents, including 100 fisherfolks representing the target population, 10 participants in focused group discussions (FGDs), and four key informant interviews (KIIs) with fishery experts selected from the local government and barangay officials, including a municipal agriculturist, an agriculture technologist in the fisheries sector, and a Department of Agriculture officer. The value chain analysis framework was used to map the actors, flows, and margins.Findings/Results: The study revealed key actors, such as fishers, consolidators, retailers, and processors. Price disparity and limited infrastructure were identified as major constraints. The value chain analysis showed that fishermen earned the highest average net profit, earning 95.30% during the peak season and 59.65% during the lean season. Retailers earned 15.19% during peak and 9.11% in lean seasons, whereas processors’ profit margins varied by product, with seasoned dried buraws reaching up to 57.91% in the peak season and 63.02% in the lean season. Retailer processors showed strong profitability, with margins of 82.84% (peak) and 77.33% (lean).  Recommendations include strengthening fisher cooperatives, improving cold-storage access, and enhancing market linkages. Conclusion: The value chain of island mackerel in the Gulf of Lagonoy has the potential for economic improvement. However, inefficiencies and limited support hinder performance. A more coordinated approach among stakeholders can significantly enhance the outcomes.Originality/value (state-of-the-art): This study provides a comprehensive local-scale value chain analysis of island mackerels in the Philippines.     Strategy For Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Suppliers: A Case Study of Botani Fresh Mart

    Background: West Java\u27s Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) growth rate for the agricultural sector, including the horticulture subsector, exhibited positive values in 2021 and 2022, while several other sectors demonstrated negative growth. However, this trend does not align with the observed conditions at Botani Fresh Mart, namely a decline in sales when the sector’s conditions improved.Purpose: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing fresh vegetable and fruit suppliers and propose recommendations for a suitable business strategy based on this analysis. Design/methodology/approach: This research demonstrates that multiple methodologies can be employed to formulate appropriate strategies for agricultural enterprises, including PESTEL analysis, Porter\u27s Five Forces Model, Structure-Conduct-Performance Concept, Value Chain Analysis, VRIO Framework, IFE and EFE Matrix, IE Matrix, and Analytical Hierarchy Process-SWOT (A\u27WOT). Findings/result: Internal factors that have a strong influence as strengths are the label inclusion and the ability to plan shipping quotas as weaknesses. The most vital external opportunity factors are (1) government support in opening market access for farmers, (2) increasing vegetable consumption in Indonesia, (3) good horticultural practice regulations, and (4) the number of farmers as potential suppliers. The most vital external threat factor is the conversion of agricultural land. Formulating alternative strategies produced 13 strategies with the priority strategy of increasing the number of partner farmers to ensure product supply.Conclusion: Based on external and internal factors, formulating alternative strategies resulted in 13 strategies. Although the primary priority strategy that can be implemented based on these factors is to increase the number of partner farmers meeting specific criteria, thereby enabling the company to meet market demand, the implementation of other strategies is necessary to enhance the company\u27s performance and support future business growth.Originality/value (State of the art): While the market for fresh produce is growing, Botani Fresh Mart is experiencing a decline in sales. This research aims to develop a customized business strategy for Botani Fresh Mart\u27s unique situation. The proposed approach takes into account both general and industry-specific external factors, as well as internal aspects identified through value chain analysis and the VRIO framework. This comprehensive method ensures that the resulting strategy not only addresses current market and industry trends but also aligns with Botani Fresh Mart\u27s particular strengths and weaknesses.     Spatial Analysis of Inclusive Growth in Central Java Province

    Background: Economic growth, while often viewed as a sign of development success, may not guarantee equitable income distribution, particularly in developing nations. The Inclusive Economic Development Index (IPEI) by the National Development Agency (Bappenas) gauges inclusivity in Indonesian development. In Central Java Province, regency/city-level IPEI varies, indicating uneven growth. Purpose: This study has two objectives: (1) to analyze the spatial distribution patterns of inclusive growth in regencies/cities within Central Java Province; and (2) to assess the relevance of the regional development system by considering the spatial interrelations of inclusive growth. Design/methodology/approach: The research utilizes secondary data. The same analytical methods are applied for both objectives with different data points Moran\u27s Index Analysis, Moran’s Scatterplot, and Local Indicator of Spatial Autocorrelation (LISA). Findings/Results: The research findings indicate that (1) the spatial distribution pattern of the IPEI in the regencies/cities of Central Java Province from 2012 to 2021 tends to form spatial clusters, with three regencies/cities showing significant and consistent local IPEI spatial influence namely Surakarta City (High-High quadrant) and Banjarnegara and Wonosobo (Low-Low quadrant), and (2) alternative Regional Development (WP) spatial analysis reveals a high IPEI spatial correlation within each WP, with Surakarta City and Salatiga City consistently appearing in the High-High quadrant, while Pekalongan City is significantly positioned in the Low-Low quadrant. Conclusion: The spatial distribution pattern of the IPEI in Central Java Province tends to form spatial clusters with three regencies/cities showing significant and consistent local IPEI spatial influence namely Surakarta City, Banjarnegara, and Wonosobo. The spatial analysis of alternative WPs reveals a strong spatial correlation of IPEI values with Surakarta City and Salatiga City identified as significant local spatial influencers.Originality/value (State of the art): This study enables the identification of regencies, cities, and/or WP with lagging IPEI values, thereby allowing policymakers to design targeted interventions. Based on the findings, Banjarnegara and Wonosobo are identified as such areas. The alternative WPs proposed in this study can serve as important considerations for regional development planning in Central Java Province.     Eco-Friendly Opportunities and Strategies of The Black Soldier Fly Maggot Business in Pariaman, West Sumatera

    Background: Food Loss and Food Waste (FLW) may have a significant impact on the global economy, environment, and food security. However, this problem also presents a business opportunity through the production and processing of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggots that utilize organic waste. Purpose: This paper aims to create a business model with Bank Sampah Sahabat Alam (BSSA) serving as the primary unit of analysis, formulate strategies, and prioritize strategies of the BSF maggot business in Pariaman, West Sumatera, to seize opportunities and use local resources. Design/methodology/approach: The data were analyzed using Business Model Canvas (BMC), Internal-External (IE), and SWOT matrices to formulate strategies, and Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) to prioritize strategies. Findings/Result: The results demonstrate that the BSF maggot business is in a growth position, with intensive and integrative strategies recommended. The QSPM suggests prioritizing the political support of the Mayor of Pariaman for the development of this business, support from local governments plays a crucial role in determining business success by influencing policy formulation and resource allocation, which is critical to ensuring effective business planning and driving sustainable growth. Modified the BMC of the BSF maggot business in Pariaman with improvements in all BMC segments to support more effective strategy execution.Conclusion: Strategy formulation through the SWOT Matrix resulted in 10 alternative strategies classified into intensive and integrative strategies from the IE matrix results. Strategy priorities for the BSF maggot business in Pariaman have been determined through QSPM analysis. The implementation of these strategies brings an update to the BMC, which provides a comprehensive guide for business development and optimization in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner. Originality/value (State of the art): This paper makes a new contribution in the application of strategies generated from a combination of internal and external environmental analysis, including VRIO, Porter\u27s Five Forces, PESTEL, as well as Internal-External (IE) and SWOT matrices, into Business Model Canvas (BMC) elements for the BSF maggot business. This holistic approach provides a more comprehensive strategic guide to deal with the sustainable business dynamics in this sector.     The Effect of Production Inputs on Productivity and Production Risk of Cloves in East Java Province

    Background: The demand for cloves, both domestically and internationally, continues to rise. However, clove productivity in East Java Province has shown fluctuations and a declining trend during the 2015 - 2022 period. This decline is influenced by various factors, including suboptimal farming input allocation, pest attacks, unpredictable weather conditions, and the cyclical nature of clove production.Purpose: This paper examines the influence of production inputs on clove productivity and production risks in East Java Province. Design/methodology/approach: This paper utilized secondary data from the 2014 Household Agricultural Survey, incorporating a sample of 937 clove farming households in East Java Province. The Just and Pope Model was utilized to evaluate the influence of production inputs on clove productivity and production risks.Findings/Results: The analysis demonstrates that clove production risks in East Java are high, as indicated by a coefficient of variation (CV) greater than 0.5. Production inputs that increase clove productivity include family labor, external labor, organic fertilizers, pesticides, and plant population. However, the application of TSP fertilizers decreases clove productivity. Furthermore, the application of ZA fertilizers increases production risks, while family labor decreases production risks.Conclusion: The findings emphasize the critical importance of managing production inputs to improve clove productivity and reduce associated risks. Key recommendations include implementing training programs to enhance farmers’ knowledge, providing subsidies to encourage efficient input use, and adopting effective pest control strategies. These interventions are essential for promoting the sustainability and resilience of clove farming in East Java. This study offers actionable insights for policymakers and stakeholders, supporting efforts to stabilize productivity and mitigate production risks.Originality/value: This paper adds to the understanding of production inputs influencing clove farming, particularly the input-related risks and productivity in East Java Province, providing insights for better farm management practices.     Export Dynamics of Rubber From Like-Minded Countries To European Union

    Background: The European Union is a major importer of natural rubber. However, the rise of global competition and the implementation of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in 2023 has impacted rubber trade dynamics, particularly in Like-Minded Countries (LMC).Purpose: This study analyzes the competitiveness and efficiency of rubber exports from 17 LMC to the European Union from 2013 to 2022.Design/methodology/approach: The study uses Revealed Comparative Advantage, Export Product Dynamics, X-Model, and Stochastic Frontier Analysis with data from the UN Comtrade, Trade Map, and World Bank.Findings/Result: This study shows increased competitiveness in rubber exports to the European Union, while some countries experienced stagnation. The implementation of sustainability policies, particularly the EUDR, significantly influences export competitiveness. Countries that adhere to sustainability standards have demonstrated notable improvements in their export performance. Conclusion: Although some countries have significant export potential, they have not fully optimized it. The LMC needs to enhance efficiency and meet sustainability standards to improve competitiveness and fully leverage export potential in the European Union market.Originality/value (state of the art): This research contributes to the limited literature on rubber trade dynamics under the impact of environmental regulations such as the EUDR.     Contract Farming Models and Their Implementation on Broiler Chicken Business Income in Nanga-Nanga District, Kendari City

    Background: The Nanga-Nanga subdistrict in Kendari City is one of the subdistricts whose community has developed a broiler chicken farming business in partnership with a company, but the implementation of the partnership sometimes does not comply with the contract.Purpose: of this study is to examine the contractual partnership model (contract farming) applied in broiler production in the Nanga-Nanga District of Kendari City, to evaluate the effectiveness of its implementation, and to analyze how the overall execution of the contractual partnership influences the income earned by broiler farmers.Design/methodology/approach: his research design employs a descriptive and quantitative approach, utilizing correlation analysis to examine relationships between variables. The study sample comprised the entire population of broiler chicken farmers involved in a partnership scheme with the company, totaling 15 respondents. Both primary and secondary data were collected for analysis. Correlation analysis was applied to evaluate the data. In addition, the study assessed several critical components of broiler chicken businesses, including income, mortality rate, average body weight, feed conversion ratio (FCR), performance index, and depreciation cost calculations.Findings/Result: The contractual partnership arrangement (contract farming) implemented in the Nanga-Nanga District of Kendari City is characterized as a bipartite model. With respect to feed provision, 40% of farmers reported that the company supplied feed in quantities that surpassed the actual requirements of their poultry, while 20% stated that the feed they received was insufficient for their livestock. In terms of operational activities, particularly the timeliness of input delivery, only 46.67% of farmers confirmed that deliveries were made according to the agreed schedule. Furthermore, compliance with the company-determined harvest and sales schedules especially regarding harvest timing reached 60%. On average, farmers recorded a total income of IDR5,786,368.80. Results from Spearman’s Rank Correlation analysis show a strong positive association between the implementation of contractual partnerships and broiler farm income, reflected in a correlation coefficient of 0.771.Conclusion: The contractual arrangement used in broiler production in the Nanga-Nanga District of Kendari City corresponds to a two-party cooperation structure. The implementation of the partnership was evaluated across three dimensions, showing different levels of execution: support related to production inputs demonstrated an exceptionally strong degree of fulfillment, operational activities were carried out at a moderately effective level, and harvest timing and sales management also showed a moderate level of implementation. Overall, the way the contract farming scheme is executed demonstrates a strong positive relationship with the income earned by broiler chicken farmers.Originality/value (State of the art): The primary contribution of this study lies in its dual focus: not only does it identify the types of contract models, but it also evaluates the degree to which these contracts are implemented. The implementation process was examined across three distinct dimensions: the supply of essential production inputs, the management of day-to-day operational processes, as well as the timing of harvesting and sales.
