Analysing the teacher's activity during distance lessons: the aspect of neurocognitive processes

    No full text
The article presents four neurocognitive processes (excitation, perception, memorisation and using, transferring and adapting information and/or actions) during learning. Based on these processes, good learning can occur if the teacher chooses appropriate methods. The article presents an analysis of 28 distance lessons. The results show that active methods are most frequently used during the excitement process. In the process of perception, the verbal (questioning) method is used. While using, transferring, and adapting information and/or actions, the teacher applies various verbal methods and self-check tests to enable pupils to revise what they have learned. Keywords: neurocognitive processes, teacher’s activity, distance lesson

Compulsive internet use scale for assessment of self-reported problematic internet use in primary school-aged children

    No full text
The tremendous growth of internet use during past few decades has been primarily led by young people. Despite a plenitude of studies reporting the pros and cons of excessive internet use by adolescents, the internet use of primary school-aged children is under-researched. First, there is lack of reliable and valid cultural invariant self-report instruments for children younger than 11-years-old. Secondly, there is no consensus on whether primary school-aged children can reliably report on their internet use. This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS) as reported by primary school-aged children in three different countries/regions. Methods: Paper-pencil format CIUS questionnaires were completed by a total of 691 children aged 8 to 10 years old, 236 of them Latvian, 207 Lithuanian, and 248 Taiwanese, as well as by one of their parents, at two-time points, separated by a one-year interval. The parents also reported on the child’s emotional and behavioral difficulties. Result: Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that for the child self-report, a 10- item CIUS showed the best fit and good psychometric properties: solid structural validity; very good internal consistency; appropriate stability and predictive validity after 1 year; as well as sound sensitivity and specificity when compared to the 14-item CIUS parent-report form. Child self-report CIUS ratings correlated with time online reported by the child and parent and with emotional and behavioral problems reported by the parent. Discussion: This study indicates that children as young as 8–10 years old can reliably and consistently provide valuable information on their problematic use of the internet. Keywords: CIUS, internet use, children, multiple informants, psychometric validation

Internet-based stress recovery intervention for adolescents: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    No full text
Background Research reveals a high prevalence of stressors in adolescence. Mental health in adolescence is highly related to life-stressors exposure and difculties in adjusting to stressors. Therefore, interventions for recovery from stress are in high demand. The study aims to evaluate the efficacy of the Internet-based stress recovery intervention for adolescents. Methods A two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) on the efcacy of the FOREST-A—an Internet-based stress recovery intervention for adolescents—will be conducted. The FOREST-A is an adapted version of stress recovery intervention initially developed for healthcare workers. FOREST-A is a third-wave cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based Internet-delivered 4-week psychosocial intervention, which comprises six modules: Introduction, Relaxation, Psychological detachment, Mastery, Control, and Summary. The intervention will be evaluated using the two-arm RCT with intervention and care as usual (CAU) condition at pre-test, post-test, and 3-month follow-up. The measured outcomes will be stress recovery, adjustment disorder, generalized anxiety and depression symptoms, psychological well-being, and perceived positive social support. Discussion The study will contribute to the development of Internet interventions—easily and broadly accessible tools—for the enhancement of adolescents’ stress recovery skills. Based on the study’s fndings, further development of the FOREST-A, including upscaling and implementation, is foreseen. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05688254. Registered on January 6, 2023. Keywords: stress, stress recovery, internet intervention, adolescents

Challenges to rural NEETs' transition from school to work in Lithuania during the COVID-19 pandemic

    No full text
This paper discusses challenges to rural NEETs' transition from school to work in Lithuania during the COVID-19 pandemic. The focus is on identifying the main issues related to the successful transition of young people from education to the labour market. The paper draws on extensive research on NEET youth transition from school to work in Lithuania, using mixed research methods including social and public policy, survey research on NEETs registered with the PES and a secondary data analysis (Eurostat data on NEETs). The study is based on survey research conducted in Lithuania from February to April 2021. A total of 453 young people who were unemployed and registered with the PES participated in the study. A subjective evaluation of the attitudes and experiences in the Lithuanian labour market of the unemployed youth (aged 18 to 35 years), registered with the PES and living in rural areas is presented. The results reveal that more young people living in rural areas claim that their situation in the labour market worsened considerably during the pandemic. Despite the fact that a number of active labour market policies targeting the NEET group are in place, specific policy measures targeting young NEETs living in rural areas need to be developed in order to address their specific needs. Keywords: unemployed youth, rural NEETs, the transition from education to the labour market, PES (public employment service), the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on youth employment

Šis tyrimas suteikia galimybę atkreipti dėmesį į profesinius veiklos tyrimus kaip į planingą pokyčių strategiją siekiant sveikatos priežiūros specialistų profesinio tobulėjimo. Tyrime taikyti metodai: mokslinės literatūros analizė, kiekybinis tyrimas (anketavimas), siekiant tyrimo tikslo – atskleisti sveikatos priežiūros specialistų profesinio tobulėjimo galimybes refleksijos ir veiklos tyrimų taikymo aspektu. Straipsnyje išanalizuotos ir susistemintos teorinės prielaidos apie sveikatos priežiūros specialistų profesinės veiklos tobulinimo galimybes taikant refleksiją ir veiklos tyrimus, atskleidžiant profesinės veiklos tobulinimo reikmę, būdus, refleksijos vaidmenį, jos raiškos veiksnius ir kt. Tyrimo metu išsiaiškintas sveikatos priežiūros specialistų požiūris į profesinį tobulėjimą, refleksijos ir veiklos tyrimų taikymo galimybes tobulinant profesinę veiklą. Pagrindiniai tyrimo rezultatai rodo, jog suvokiama profesinės veiklos tobulinimo gebėjimų svarba, tačiau jos tobulinimo galimybės taikant refleksiją ir veiklos tyrimus nepakankamai išnaudojamos, tad atsiveria erdvė šių galimybių edukacijai. Tyrimo rezultatai gali būti pritaikyti sveikatos priežiūros specialistų profesinės veiklos tobulinimo galimybių plėtrai. Raktažodžiai: profesinis tobulėjimas, patirtinis mokymasis, refleksija, veikos tyrimas, sveikatos priežiūros specialistas. As no evidence of scientific studies analysing the professional development of healthcare professionals through reflective practice and performance-based research could be found, this study provides an opportunity to focus on professional performance-based research as a planned change strategy for the professional development of healthcare professionals. The study questions raised include: What is the theoretical rationale behind the professional development of healthcare professionals through reflective practice and performance-based research? What is the role of learning from experience and reflection in professional performance-based research for the professional development of healthcare professionals? Object of the study: professional development and performance-based research of healthcare professionals. Aim of the study: to analyse and ground the professional development potentials of healthcare professionals in the application of reflective and performance-based research. Objectives of the study: 1) to analyse the theoretical insights into the professional development of healthcare professionals through performance-based research, uncovering the need for and methods for professional development, the role of reflection, and the determinants of expression; 2) to explore healthcare professionals' attitudes towards professional development potentials in terms of reflective practice and application of performance-based research. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature, quantitative research (questionnaire survey). Study sample. The survey included healthcare professionals who in the period between January-June 2023 were in non-formal education at the Centre for Continuing Studies of Klaipeda University Faculty of Social Studies and Humanities (total number of participants was 9). The surveyed were healthcare professionals in the following fields (N = 126): nursing, public health, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, radiology, acupuncture, and others. The sampling that has been chosen for the study – probability convenience, targeted. The sample is heterogeneous, with most respondents being female (76%), aged between 31 and 45 (68%), employed (85%), having more than 11 years of work experience (67%) and with a university degree (81%). Key results of the study. The respondents understand the relevance of professional development skills but have insufficient awareness of the benefits of learning from experience and reflection as effective ways to improve professional development. The respondents lack reflective thinking and experiential learning skills. Reflection and the use of performance-based research as a means of professional development is the choice of a small number of respondents. This indicates that only some of the respondents associate the skills of reflection and self-performance with the implementation of professional development in practice. Only one fifth of respondents see the development and practical testing of an individual career strategy as a motivating factor for their professional development. This demonstrates that the benefits of performance-based research and reflection are not sufficiently understood and put into practice among respondents. Only a fifth of respondents admit to practising critical reflection skills for learning from experience and improving their performance. The study suggests that healthcare professionals are insufficiently aware of the opportunities for their professional development through reflection and performance-based research. This opens up space for their education in future perspective. Keywords: professional development, experiential learning, reflection, performance-based research, healthcare professional

With high competitiveness in the sports club industry, it is necessary to claim high-quality and good services for the consumer. The quality of the services provided is recognized as an essential component in gaining a competitive advantage (Wilson et al., 2016). While maintaining the good quality of the services provided, maintaining stability and creating a mutual connection between the client and the sports club, regular and loyal customers are created. (Peitzika, Chatzi & Kissa, 2020). realizing that the quality of the services provided and the expectations set by them do not differ, they are satisfied (Preitzika, Chatzi and Kissa, 2020). In order to remain competitive, significant attempts have been made to adapt the quality of service perceived by customers (Lam et al., 2005). The problem of work is raised by the question of what is the quality of the services of a sports club and by what means to improve it. Various methods are used to assess the quality of services. Scales such as SERVQUAL and SQAS scales are often used to evaluate the services provided by sports clubs (Polyakova & Mirza, 2016). It can be assumed that sports clubs need to constantly improve the quality of their inventory and optimize the space by providing the widest possible range of sports services in order to ensure long-term income and constant growth (Sherif et all., 2022). The purpose of the work: to introduce the quality of the services of the Sports Club “Sportgates” from the point of view of customers. Tasks of the work: To discuss the factors determining the quality of services of sports clubs; describe the quality assessment models; identify the factors that determine the quality of the services of the sports club “Sportgates” and the possibilities of improvement. Keywords: quality, sports club, sports services

Effect of ownership structure on dividend payments: evidence from public companies in Nordic and Baltic countries

    No full text
We investigate whether ownership structure influences the likelihood andamount of dividend payments in two groups of European Union’s public companies: Nordic and Baltic. Nordic and Baltic capital markets have become increasingly integrated through Nasdaq OMX stock exchanges and harmonized by the EU cor-porate governance directives. However, some differences in the corporate governance system, legislation, practice, and ownership structure still exist. The study covers Nordic and Baltic companies listed on the Nasdaq OMX for the period 2013–2020. Logit and Tobit panel regressions are applied to disclose the effect of ownership structure on the likelihood and amount of dividend payments accord-ingly. We find that ownership concentration positively influences the likelihood and amount of dividend payments in Nordic public companies. Managerial ownershipdoes not influence the likelihood of dividend payments but positively influencestheir amount. Institutional ownership does not influence the likelihood of dividend payments but negatively influences their amount. Our findings revealed that own-ership structure does not have any effect either on the likelihood of dividendpayments or on their amount in Baltic public companies. We disclosed that theeffect of ownership structure on dividend payments is influenced by the context behind ownership structure. The results of our research will improve understandingand predict the decision-making on dividend payments and will help investors manage their portfolios, choosing between current and future consumption. Keywords: ownership structure; dividend payments; ownership concentration; managerial ownership; institutional ownership
