By transcending the boundaries of the science of archaeology, uncovering new conceptions of the world, providing answers to complex prehistoric questions, expanding our understanding of civilizations, and grasping the language of symbols, Marija Gimbutas opened the gates of eternity for the cultures of the Neolithic Bronze Age as a distinct whole of a world and its visions. By identifying “Old Europe” as an ideal era, Gimbutas introduced this cultural reality and thus shed light on an extraordinary period in prehistoric Europe. The time of 6500 BC – the start of the feminine era – remains for the present day an inspiration for change and a foundation for value priorities, as a form of peaceful, tranquil, egalitarian, and nature-honoring co-existence. Marija Gimbutas’ ideas swept the world and became the basis for ever new ideas, insights, and creative projects. Her pertinent and meaningful insights, scientific hypotheses, and discoveries of symbols have ensured her relevance today. Digital and traditional media in the twenty-first century – the Internet, virtual space and social media, television and film, press and publishing, and the visual arts – continue to develop the Lithuanian-American archaeologist’s ideas, continuing the interactive power of wisdom and impact, meaning and discovery, that is inherent in the thoughts, ideas, and work of Marija Gimbutas

Objectives: The study aimed to assess the mental health and well-being of Lithuanian healthcare workers by gathering demographic information, identifying common stressors affecting the work environment, evaluating mental health, and exploring directions for psychosocial care. Additionally, the research explored the prevalence of considering a career change among respondents. Material and Methods: The study included 1618 responders who completed an online survey in December 2021 – January 2022. Participants included in this study: physicians, nurses, residents and other healthcare workers. It evaluated their demographics, most common stressors affecting their work environment and mental health on the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale – 21 (DASS-21) scale. Lastly, all responders asked if they had considered changing their occupation to a non-medical job. Univariate analysis was performed using X2 and Student’s t test, and binary logistic regression evaluated career change predictors. Results: Career change was considered by 1081 (66.8%) responders. The main career change predictors were poor working conditions (OR 1.91, p <0.001), direct contact with patients (OR 1.84, p <0.001), lack of career perspectives (OR 1.95, p <0.001), mobbing (OR 1.67, p = 0.001) and exhaustion (OR 1.51, p = 0.005). After evaluating DASS-21 scores, it was found that 23% of respondents had severe and extremely severe depression symptoms, 27.4% severe and extremely severe anxiety, and 21.4% had severe and extremely severe stress levels. Conclusions: Lithuanian healthcare workers are in high distress and have poor mental health. They are in need psychosocial assistance to avoid burnout and staff loss. Keywords: anxiety, burnout, mental health, depression, healthcare workers, career change

Lithuanian composers in the post-Soviet period

    No full text
[...] The period immediately after 1990 was largely compensatory, trying to make up for all the years of limited access and creative freedom. As a counter to everyday life, where there were many immediate challenges and attempts to master new procedures of day-to-day activity, artists moved more incrementally. Creative opportunities opened little by little, and composers tried to understand and incorporate principles of creativity and expression that existed in the free world. Musical aesthetics remained somewhat intact across the threshold of 1990, but the methods of work and professionalism shifted dramatically. The reorganisation of cultural institutions and their economic incapacity forced artists to create individual survival strategies rather than depend on larger systems of support. Many were not prepared to take on the role, and the situation favoured those who tended to embrace the new initiatives rather than those who held firmly to the Soviet regime. [...

Participation of Roma pupils in non-formal education in Lithuania

    No full text
While Lithuania has made significant progress in integrating Roma pupils into the education system, real changes are still insufficient and require attention to the participation of Roma pupils in non-formal education. The aim of this paper is to highlight the opportunities and limitations of Roma pupils' participation in non-formal education. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect qualitative data. The participants in the study included 11 parents of Roma pupils, 8 school social pedagogues, and 3 workers from NGOs. Content analysis was conducted. Roma parents relate the benefits of non-formal education to children's meaningful leisure time, the development of skills necessary for a successful future, and the improvement of health. Parents face problems related to the accessibility and financing of non-formal education for pupils with special needs. Social pedagogues observe the involvement of primary school Roma pupils in events, various sports, or art groups. However, teenagers tend not to participate in non-formal education at school. Teenagers engage in non-formal education outside of school when events or sports activities are financed by sponsors rather than the family budget. Recognition of the contribution of NGOs in supporting and involving Roma pupils in non-formal education is crucial. This support is not only important for the promotion of Roma identity but also for strengthening the motivation of teenagers to attend school classes. Keywords: parents of pupils, participation in non-formal education, Roma pupils, social pedagogues, workers of non-governmental organizations

This article analyzes the role of social workers in developing children's independence in community care homes. The primary goal of a social worker's activity is to provide a suitable service and teach the recipients of their services to solve problems on their own. The children's opportunity to see and grow up in a close family environment depends on the employees' value orientation and worldview. During the deinstitutionalization processes in Lithuania, social workers had to create an environment close to the family and consolidate the family model in communal children's care homes. This article aims to examine how the training and competencies of social workers impact the preparation of children for independent living in society. Applied research methods are analysis of scientific literature and documents, expert interviews, analysis, and interpretation of research results. The review of the scientific literature, presented in the article and the research data, can be applied to improve community care homes providing social services to highlight the role of social workers in creating a safe environment for the child, involving the child in the planning and organization of activities, fostering self-confidence and their abilities. Keywords: community children's care home, independence development, organizational activity, social services

The rise of nationalism and modernization encouraged the emergence of a range of language reforms within different ethnic groups. One of the most widespread was the idea of Latinization, which emerged in Ottoman Empire, Caucasus, and Jewish groups in Europe in the beginning of the 20th century. The reform swept through those regions and effected many linguistic communities in different countries. The article aims to discuss the Latinization projects in Karaite and Jewish Rabbanite communities and the impact of other Latinization reforms for these communities. The implemented research has shown that Latinization projects in Jewish communities were a part of a bigger movement. And, despite of different motivations, that drove these reforms in Karaite and Jewish Rabbanite communities, we can trace the impact of the Turkish language reforms in both projects. Response to repressions: Lithuanian clergy in dramatic post-war turmoil.

    No full text
For a long time after the war, Lithuanians were convinced that the United States of America and England would demand that Stalin withdraw his troops from the occupied European countries. Predictions of imminent political change, based on all sorts of reasoning rather than evidence, continued to circulate among the people. The hopes of liberation were directly linked with the phenomenon of hiding, a self-defense against assumed or imminent Stalinist repression. The aim of this article is to highlight the causes and prevalence of the phenomenon of hiding in Lithuania in the face of Soviet repressions, and the role of the clergy in the related events of 1944-1956. The research covers the documents of the Ministry/Committee for State Security (MGB/KGB) in the Lithuanian Special Archives, as well as biographies and diaries describing the circumstances of the people who chose to go into hiding

Pirmiausia aptariama ikimokyklinio ir priešmokyklinio ugdymo pedagogų IT kompetencija ir IT taikymo galimybes vaikų ugdymo(si) procese. Toliau siekiama nustatyti, kaip pedagogai praktiškai taiko IT ugdymo(si) procese. Tyrimo metodai: mokslinės literatūros ir dokumentų analizė, apklausa raštu (anketa), duomenų kiekybinė ir kokybinė analizė. Apžvelgus mokslinę literatūrą ir dokumentus apie ikimokyklinio ir priešmokyklinio ugdymo pedagogų IT kompetenciją išryškėjo, kad ikimokyklinio ir priešmokyklinio ugdymo pedagogų IT kompetencija apima šiuos pagrindinius gebėjimus: skaitmeninio turinio kūrimą, skaitmeninę komunikaciją, saugą bei problemų sprendimą. Svarbiausi įgūdžiai: IT programėlių ir skaitmeninių įrankių (kompiuterio, planšetės, interaktyvios lentos) naudojimas vaikų meninei raiškai ir rašymo įgūdžiams lavinti, skaitmeninių terminų išmanymas ir perteikimas vaikams. Taip pat atskleidžiamos IT naudojimo ugdymo(si) procese galimybės, tokios kaip mokomieji žaidimai, vaizdo medžiagos peržiūra, bendradarbiavimas internetu, informacijos paieška, turinio kūrimas bei balso įrašymo tyrinėjimas. Atlikus empirinį tyrimą nustatyta, kad dauguma apklaustųjų geba apibrėžti informacinių technologijų kompetencijos sąvoką ir sutinka, kad ši kompetencija tampa vis svarbesnė; vaikų ugdyme dažniausiai naudojamos interaktyvios grindys ir interaktyvi lenta; pedagogai dažnai susiduria su IT priemonių stoka, lėtu interneto ryšiu, ribotu laiku IT priemonėms bei žinių ar laiko trūkumu; vaikų ugdyme naudojant IT, dažnai tyrinėjamos elektroninės knygos, pasakos, žemėlapiai, mokomoji vaizdo medžiaga, ieškoma informacijos internete; retai naudojamas diktofonas, spausdintuvas ar fotoaparatas, taip pat retai kuriami pranešimai, iliustracijos, bendraujama nuotoliniu būdu, žaidžiami mokomieji žaidimai. Reikšminiai žodžiai: ikimokyklinis ir priešmokyklinis ugdymas, informacinių technologijų kompetencija/skaitmeninių technologijų kompetencija.Information technology (IT) is constantly evolving, influencing various aspects of human life. Numerous documents emphasise the significance of digital technologies in the teaching/ learning process and their integration into educational institutions. Over the years, IT has undergone rapid advancements, introducing new tools and applications. While technology serves as a valuable asset in the educational process, its effective use with pre-school and pre-primary children presents challenges due to the developmental needs of children and the IT skills of teachers. Thus, the study focuses on the development of IT competence among pre-school and pre-primary school teachers in the educational process. The aim is to investigate how these teachers apply information technologies in practice to support children’s education. To achieve this aim, two main objectives were pursued: (1) to analyse the IT competencies of pre-school and pre-primary school teachers and their potential applications in children’s education, and (2) to explore how teachers implement their IT competencies in the educational process. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating the analysis of scientific literature and policy documents, the administration of a written survey (questionnaire), and the application of both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques. A review of the literature and documents on IT competencies of pre-school and pre-primary teachers has shown that the digital competencies of pre-school and pre-primary teachers include the following key competencies: digital content creation, digital communication, safety and problem-solving. Key skills: use of IT applications and digital tools (computer, tablet, interactive whiteboard) to develop children’s artistic expression and writing skills, knowledge of digital terms, and communicating them to children. It also highlights the possibilities of using IT in the educational process, such as educational games, viewing video material, online collaboration, searching for information, creating content and exploring voice recording. The empirical study found that the majority of respondents can define the concept of digital competence and agree that it is becoming more and more important, that interactive floors and interactive whiteboards are commonly used in children’s education, and that educators are often confronted with a lack of IT tools, slow internet connections, limited time for IT tools, and a lack of knowledge or time; IT in children’s education is often used to explore e-books, stories, maps, educational videos, search for information on the Internet. Less frequent uses included dictaphones, printers, cameras, and activities such as creating presentations and illustrations, engaging in remote communication, and playing educational games. Keywords: pre-school and pre-primary education, IT competence of pre-school and pre-primary educators
