    No full text
The goal of this study was to confirm the hypothesis of whether the journal „Duga“ was a journal of Greater Serbian propaganda in Yugoslavia from 87' to 91'. The beginning of this paper focuses on the journal „Duga“ and it aims to further clarify for the readers the Great Serbian ideology. The following pages of this paper attempt to explain the period in which Serbia and Yugoslavia found themselves after the 1974 Constitution was adapted. This is followed by the most important part of this work which, by analysing the content of the journal, strives to incorporate „Duga“ in the context of the dissolution of Yugoslavia as well as chronologically compare the content of the journal together with historiographical facts of different authors

Zagrebačka sramotna knjiga. Disciplinske mjere u hrvatskom školstvu u drugoj polovici 19. stoljeća

    No full text
During the 19th century, as one of disciplinary measures in western schooling system was accepted the practice of recording school punishment books, also called “black books”. A valuable copy of the punishment book from Zagreb, known as Sramotna knjiga Glavne učione, has been keeping in Croatian School Museum. The research is based on a handwritten records of undesired behavior of students and punishments from 1857 to 1893 in two primary schools in Zagreb, Glavna učiona (from 1857 to 1875) and Donjogradska pučka škola (from 1875 to 1894). Through a few decades of records, about one thousand students have been reported for misbehaving or violating the school rules, such as rude behavior or speech at school, swearing, spitting, throwing rocks, street fights, theft, skipping classes or wandering the streets. For every offense they would be recorded in the punishment book, or even punished with imprisonment, kneeling or caning. All recorded offenses and students have been analized and compared with taken disciplinary measures. Research also discovered wrong attribution of The Book itself, missing additional place of keeping and recording

    Antropologija na granici znanstveno-književnog sistema

    No full text
Rad istraţuje mogućnosti knjiţevne antropologije povratkom knjiţevnom obratu, a usporednim ĉitanjem antropološkog teksta Tužni tropi Claude Lévi-Straussa i knjiţevnog teksta Pripovjedač priča Maria Vargasa Llose.

    No full text

Mechanisms of Change in English and Latin Lexicon - A Comparison

    No full text
The aim of my work is to show the mechanisms of semantic change and the way they affected some of the words when they were borrowed from Latin into the English lexicon in the sixteenth century. The analysis of the words is based on the cognitive theories about prototypical categories and mechanisms of metaphor and metonymy which act as forces expanding categories and creating new meanings and senses of words. The analyzed words were chosen from The Proheme of The Boke named the Gouernour by Sir Thomas Elyot. The research shows the importance of historical, political, and social circumstances and their impact on language

Attitudes towards ELF in EFL learners

    No full text
Nowadays, most interaction in English takes place between non-native speakers. More and more people engage in ELF interactions every day. This is why the notion of ELF should be introduced into English language teaching. The aim of this study is to examine Croatian high school students’ attitudes towards English as a Lingua Franca, with a focus on its lexicogrammatical features. In the present study a questionnaire was used to gather qualitative data. Factors that may have an effect on students’ attitudes will also be discussed. Even though there has not been a lot of research in this particular field, this study may contribute to understanding students’ attitudes towards ELF lexicogrammatical features

Exemplary U.S. Ethnic Bildungsromane in the Era of High Multiculturalism

    No full text
In this graduation thesis I explore how members of marginalized groups form their identity and integrate into the mainstream society. This is done by comparing the classical European Bildungsroman as defined by Franco Moretti, with the Bildungsroman written by ethnic authors in the era of high multiculturalism in the United States. The novels chosen for the analysis are The House on Mango Street (1984) by Sandra Cisneros, Breath, Eyes, Memory (1994) by Edwidge Danticat, The Kite Runner (2003) by Khaled Hosseini and American Dervish (2012) by Ayad Akhtar. The protagonists of the chosen novels all belong to different minority groups. I offer a brief summary of the origins and features of the Bildungsroman and a brief history of the development of multiculturalism around the world with a focus on its development in the United States and how the Civil Rights movement and the change in the composition of the US population contributed to the move from the notion of the melting pot to that of multiculturalism. The question of multiculturalism’s validity at the present time has been briefly explored as well. Based on Christopher Douglas’s book A Genealogy of Literary Multiculturalism the development of literary multiculturalism has also been explained. Douglas partitions literary multiculturalism into three phases and we are interested in the third phase, i.e. the period from 1965 onwards, because at that time there is an increase in multicultural literary work and revisions of traditional genres, including the Bildungsroman. In the analysis I study how the protagonists reach maturity and thus form their identity by finding a balance between the expectations of the immigrant community and the mainstream society. Furthermore, we see how the tension between the ethnic and the national is aggravated by discrimination and alleviated by education. In the analysis we also see in what ways the classical Bildungsroman and the ethnic multicultural Bildungsroman differ

Representation of The Penal State in HBO’s The Wire

    No full text
This master’s thesis explores the representation of the penal state in HBO’s acclaimed TV show The Wire. After dismantling the welfare system in the 1990s, the United States of America has shifted to a punitive regulation of poverty. This is evidenced by the fact that the incarceration rate has increased four times in the span of 25 years, while the crime rates remained stagnant. The restriction of welfare was justified by invoking the ideology of personal responsibility and stereotypes such as the “welfare queen.” By illustrating the systemic urban inequality of the inner city which limits its characters’ individual autonomy, The Wire positions itself against the ideology of personal responsibility. Its vast array of complex, three-dimensional characters serves to dispel stereotypes of African American residents of the inner city. However, the stereotypical representations still persist when the show’s focus shifts to African American mothers. They are represented as irresponsible and their desires are linked directly to their sons’ negative outcomes. In a rare didactic moment, the series encourages nuclear patriarchal families as the antidote to the decaying institutions of the dilapidated American inner city

Pragmatic Strategies in Translating from English to Croatian and from Croatian to English

    No full text
This thesis is comprised of five translations, accompanied by a discussion. Three texts were translated from English into Croatian, while two texts were translated from Croatian into English. The texts that were translated from English into Croatian are excerpts from Avrum Stoll's Did My Genes Make Me Do It? (And Other Philosophical Dilemmas), Rick Hanson's Hardwiring Happiness: How to Reshape Your Brain and Your Life and from the document Framework for major emergency management. The texts that were translated into Croatian are an excerpt from Tanja Radović's novel Pitanje Nade, the article Sloboda udruživanja pod nadzorom from the web portal Kulturpunkt and excerpts from two other articles from the same portal. The discussion focuses on pragmatic translation strategies as outlined in Andrew Chesterman's Memes of translation. After a brief outline of the role of pragmatics in translation studies, each of Chesterman's strategies is explained and accompanied by examples of their use from the translations. Tekstovi prevedeni s engleskoga jezika isječci su iz djela Did My Genes Make Me Do It? (And Other Philosophical Dilemmas) Avruma Strolla i Hardwiring Happiness: How to Reshape Your Brain and Your Life Ricka Hansona te isječak dokumenta Framework for major emergency management.
