Climate, environmental, and biodiversity impacts of organic pig agroforestry system in Denmark
To evaluate the climate, environmental, and biodiversity impacts of the organic agroforestry pig system, this study analysed a Danish organic agroforestry pig farm as a case study. Specifically, this study aims to 1) assess the climate, environmental, and biodiversity impacts of an organic pig agroforestry production system; and 2) discuss the methodological challenges in assessing the agroforestry pig production system with LCA. In the agroforestry-based pig production system with sows, grass, trees and output of 14 kg weaned piglets, the carbon footprint per piglet was reduced by 5% due to C sequestration in trees. However, when the system also included fattening of slaughter pigs, this effect was diluted, and per kg LW pig, this reduction was only 1%. Biodiversity impacts varied by land-use type: tree and grassland areas provided some mitigation, but annual crop production for feed contributed to biodiversity loss
Evaluation of Sentinel-2 Deep Resolution 3.0 Data for Winter Crop Identification and Organic Barley Yield Prediction
Barley is an ecologically adaptable crop widely used in agriculture and well suited for organic farming. Satellite imagery from Sentinel-2 can support crop monitoring and yield prediction, optimising production processes. This study compares two types of Sentinel-2 data—standard (S2) data with 10 m and 20 m resolution and Sentinel-2 Deep Resolution 3 (S2DR3) data with 1 m resolution—to assess their (i) relationship with yield in organically grown barley and (ii) utility for winter crop mapping. Vegetation indices were generated and analysed across different phenological phases to determine the most suitable predictors of yield. The results indicate that using 10 × 10 m data, the BBCH-41 phase is optimal for yield prediction, with the Green Chlorophyll Vegetation Index (GCVI; r = 0.80) showing the strongest correlation with yield. In contrast, S2DR3 data with a 1 × 1 m resolution demonstrated that Transformed the Chlorophyll Absorption in Reflectance Index (TCARI), TO, and Normalised Difference Red Edge Index (NDRE1) were consistently reliable across all phenological stages, except for BBCH-51, which showed weak correlations. These findings highlight the potential of remote sensing in organic barley farming and emphasise the importance of selecting appropriate data resolutions and vegetation indices for accurate yield prediction. With the use of three-date spectral band stacks, the Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Classification (SVC) methods were used to differentiate between wheat, barley, and rapeseed. A five-fold cross-validation approach was applied, training data were stratified with 200 points per crop, and classification accuracy was assessed using the User’s and Producer’s accuracy metrics through pixel-by-pixel comparison with a reference raster. The results for S2 and S2DR3 were very similar to each other, confirming the significant potential of S2DR3 for high-resolution crop mapping

Well-performing heterogeneous varieties developed by DIVERSILIENCE: results and opportunities for introduction into cultivation
The research work carried out by the project DIVERSILIENCE highlighted the high agronomic value of (a) a few populations of wheat in Denmark and Norway, white lupin in Italy, and common or runner bean in Slovenia, and (b) a few cultivar mixtures of wheat and soybean in Romania (see the deliverable D2.1). The current deliverable aims to discuss challenges and opportunities to make the seed of these materials available to organic farmers. Key factors in this respect were the type (population or cultivar mixture), extent of morphophysiological heterogeneity, and ownership of the material, and the potential market size of the species and heterogeneous variety.
Cultivar mixtures are far less challenging than populations for adoption by farmers, provided that all the relevant component cultivars are available on the market. Usually, populations ought to be registered as OHM as a precondition for their availability to organic farmers. One exception was represented by a Slovenian composite population originated from four lines that were pre-selected for identity of morphophysiological traits, which achieved sufficient homogeneity and distinctness for ordinary registration under the name of KIS Amand.
For registered populations, a crucial challenge is represented by the development of a business model that could sustain the breeding of OHM, within seed systems that have been designed and regulated for genetically homogeneous varieties.
The populations bred by a public breeding institution (as in the case of white lupin and bean materials) could be considered as a public good whose marketing does not need to generate funds for breeding work. However, their marketing by a licensed seed firm should involve seed fees able to compensate for seed amounts that are expectedly lower than for ordinary varieties because of wide farmers’ utilization of saved seed for future sowings.
The seed marketing of the best wheat populations, which were bred by private breeders, could hardly produce enough income to support breeding activities, at least in this pioneer phase of population adoption by farmers. Agrologica has devised an original system of membership fees for farmers that require population seed. Anyway, some form of public support appears necessary to support at least in part the breeding work on populations performed by interested breeders
Erarbeitung eines Web-basierten Managementsystems (SWATopti) zur nicht-chemischen Regulierung der Möhrenfliege (Chamaepsila rosae), der Kleinen Kohlfliege (Delia radicum) und Bohnenfliege (Delia platura) unter Verwendung von SWAT und Risikoanalysen (Verbundvorhaben)
Dieses Verbundprojekt besteht aus den Teilprojekten FKZ 19NA057 und FKZ 19NA119
Ziel des Projektes war die Entwicklung praxistauglicher Monitoring- und Entscheidungshilfesysteme (EHS), die ein wichtiger Baustein im nicht-chemischen Pflanzenschutz sind. Die Forschungsarbeiten zielten dabei auf eine Verbesserung der Regulierungsmöglichkeiten von Möhrenfliege (Chamaepsila rosae), Kleiner Kohlfliege (Delia radicum) und Wurzelfliegen (Delia spp.), insbesondere der Bohnenfliege (Delia platura) im Freilandgemüsebau ab. Die erarbeiteten EHS, denen jeweils ein Prognosemodell zugrunde liegt, wurden validiert und für professionelle Anwender und Anwenderinnen auf der ISIP-Plattform verfügbar gemacht. Ein wichtiges Arbeitspaket im Projekt war dabei die Auswahl eines geeigneten Prognosemodells. Dafür wurden die beiden Modellsysteme SWAT und PhenoLogit anhand von Monitoringdaten aus dem Freilandgemüseanbau validiert und die Ergebnisse miteinander verglichen und bewertet. Die Monitoringdaten wurden sowohl während der Projektlaufzeit erhoben, als auch aus Datensammlungen verschiedener Einrichtungen bezogen.
Zusätzlich wurden bestehende und neue Monitoringmethoden für die drei Gemüsefliegenarten überprüft und bewertet. Im Bereich Risikoanalyse wurden Untersuchungen zur Wirtspflanzenpräferenz durchgeführt. Hierbei wurde die Attraktivität der Entwicklungsstadien (BBCH-Stadien) der Kulturen, verschiedene Kulturarten oder Sorten auf die Möhrenfliegen und Kleine Kohlfliegen getestet. Weiterhin wurde ein GIS-Modul entwickelt, das das Entscheidungshilfesystem der Möhrenfliege ergänzt und sich für konkrete räumliche Anbauplanungen anwenden lässt. Für die Entwicklung eines Modells für die Bohnenfliege D. platura wurden physiologische Untersuchungen zur Temperaturabhängigkeit der Entwicklungsstadien durchgeführt, um ein Prognosemodell parametrisieren zu können
