    Kommunikation von Regionalität bei Bio-Lebensmitteln in Hochschulmensen

    Das Forschungsprojekt KommReBio evaluiert, wie der Einsatz von regionalen Bio-Lebensmitteln in Hochschulmensen vermittelt wird und welche Kommunikationsmaßnahmen besonders wirksam sind. Ferner wurde analysiert, wie die befragten Verpflegungsverantwortlichen Regionalität für sich definieren und inwiefern sie ein Prüfsystem zur Absicherung der Herkunft für sinnvoll erachten. Untersuchungsgegenstand waren die Kommunikationsinstrumente von 19 der insgesamt 57 deutschen Studierendenwerke. Zur Ermittlung des Status quo wurden qualitative Interviews durchgeführt und visualisierte Kommunikationsmittel, die den Einsatz regionaler und Bio-Lebensmittel darstellten, betrachtet. Zur Bewertung der eingereichten Kommunikationsmittel, wie Aktionsplakate oder Hinweisschilder in der Mensa, auf der Website oder Social Media unterstützten Expert*innen aus der Gemeinschaftsverpflegung und Kommunikationswissenschaften die Evaluierung. Die Auswertung der Interviews erfolgte mithilfe der Auswertungssoftware MaxQDA. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung zeigen, dass Hochschulmensen in unterschiedlichem Umfang über den Einsatz von regionalen und Bio-Lebensmitteln kommunizieren. Ein häufig eingesetzter Kommunikationskanal zur Kennzeichnung von regionalen und Bio-Produkten ist der Speiseplan, gefolgt von Aushängen in der Mensa oder auf mensaeigenen Bildschirmen. Genutzt werden auch die Nachhaltigkeitsseite auf der Website des Studierendenwerks und Social-Media-Plattformen sowie Apps zur Kommunikation von Neuerungen oder Aktionen. Die Bewertungen der Kommunikationskonzepte durch Expert*innen fielen sehr unterschiedlich aus. Konsens bestand jedoch darin, dass die Kommunikation gezielt auf die individuellen Präferenzen der jeweiligen Mensagäste abgestimmt werden sollte. Einheitlich ist auch die Aussage der Expert*innen, dass unabhängig von Kommunikationsform und -inhalt die Transparenz und Authentizität der Inhalte maßgeblich ist. Dies trifft insbesondere auf den Aspekt der Regionalität zu, der aufgrund einer fehlenden einheitlichen Definition die Studierendenwerke vor Herausforderungen in der Kommunikation stellt. Die Einschätzung zur Frage nach der Relevanz und Gestaltung eines Prüfsystems für Regionalität fiel differenziert aus, wobei sich die Mehrheit gegen ein weiteres Prüfsystem aussprachen. Ergänzend dazu wurde eine umfassende Recherche zu den in Deutschland verfügbaren Prüfsystemen für Regionalität durchgeführt

    Microbial inoculant has little effect on greenhouse gas emissions following cover crop incorporation

    A net negative emissions technology is the transformation of CO2 and its storage in agricultural soils in form of soil organic carbon (SOC). One possibility to increase SOC stocks in agriculture is to grow and incorporate cover crops in the upper soil layer. However, incorporation of fresh plant material can also increase N2O emissions and thereby reduce the overall greenhouse gas mitigation effect. While the effect of removing plant material is relatively well understood, the effect of different incorporation methods and the inoculation of cover crops with microbial inoculant (MI) is still poorly known. To investigate these effects, we conducted an incubation study and a field trial where a grass-clover cover crop was followed by maize. We measured greenhouse gas emissions (N2O, CO2), soil parameters (Nmin, DOC, soil moisture and temperature), soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks and maize yield. In the four weeks following cover crop incorporation, shallow rotary tillage induced 30 % higher CO2 emissions than ploughing and removal of cover crop biomass resulted in significantly lower N2O and CO2 emissions as if it was mulched and inoculated with MI. Regarding the whole season, removal of aboveground cover crop biomass reduced N2O field emissions in tendency by 21 %, whereby the trend in N2O reduction by adding MI in the field was less pronounced. Total N2O emissions did not differ between tillage implements used for incorporation. SOC stocks did not change within 0–20 cm within a year. Maize yield was 23 % higher with ploughing than rotary tillage. Overall, the addition of MI during cover crop incorporation might improve the greenhouse gas balance, but potential effects are superimposed too strongly by other management and meteorological factors. Therefore, claims that MI are an option to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture remain weakly substantiated

    Farmer-participatory design and assessment of warm-season legume cereal binary associations for southern Europe

    Cereal-legume intercropping increases biodiversity at field level, but to ensure satisfactory yield, mixtures must be optimized in terms of crop-type, species proportions and cultivation technique. Adopting a farmer-participatory approach, this research work assessed a set of promising warm-season legume-cereal mixtures for two years under organic farming in Northern Italy (cowpea and soybean-based mixtures) and in Slovenia (common bean-based mixtures) for yield ability and acceptability by farmers. In addition, promising cowpea material evaluated in Italy was tested in Slovenia for one year. In Northern Italy, six treatments of intercropping (three legume-sorghum mixtures × two spatial arrangements) and four treatments of sole cropping were studied. The three legumes were a determinate-erect cowpea, an indeterminate-climbing cowpea, and soybean. In intercropping, sorghum and one of the legumes were sown either mixed within each row or in alternate rows. In Slovenia, binary associations of common bean with durum wheat, winter wheat and maize were studied. A first experiment addressed the effect of the interaction between two common bean varieties of indeterminate growth type and maize on grain yield, while a second experiment investigated the binary associations of two dwarf growth types of common bean varieties with winter wheat. Intercropping cowpea and soybean with sorghum under organic farming in Northern Italy was a successful technique to sustain crop yield and at the same time increase biodiversity at the field level. Increasing sorghum sowing rate and identifying genotypes of both legumes and sorghum with a better synchrony in their phenological stages (harvest for silage and for grain) is needed to optimize the studied mixtures. Cowpea breeding for high biomass yield, less sensitivity to photoperiod and shorter reproductive period could contribute to intercropping improvement. Associating cereals with common bean in Slovenia provided satisfactory yield for bread and winter wheat, whereas for maize the competition between the two species caused a yield reduction of maize in intercropping. Lower yield in intercropping was also measured in common bean. Further studies should address optimal variety choice and crop spatial arrangement to improve intercropping performance. In both target regions the necessity clearly emerged of adopting techniques to reduce weed growth in the early stages of crop development to ensure the productivity of intercropping.
