    No full text

The French (Hip-Hop) Revolution Is Yet to Come: a sociology of rap music in France

    No full text
International audienceThis chapter offers an overview of the various spaces which have led to the racialisation of rap music in France using tools available to cultural sociology. It relies on several extensive case studies conducted in the past ten years on French rap music, its production, its consumption, and its media treatment. With the help of the “production of culture perspective”, the chapter describes how the music industry seized the opportunity to exploit a commercial niche that would later become a racialised professional segment central in its business. Focusing on the consumption of music, we then contest the representation of rap audiences as exclusively or initially male, non-White and working-class based, and demonstrate how these audiences have been socially diversified from the outset. These empirical findings are not contradictory with the capacity of rap to serve as a formative medium for racial self-understandings in contemporary France. Finally, the sociology of cultural legitimacy offers a framework to examine the political, legal, and mediatic racialisation processes which have incited moral panic relating to rap and rappers, such as lawsuits or attempts to censor their work

International audienceKathleen Raine, born in Ilford (a London suburb now called Redbridge) on June 14, 1908, and who died in London on July 6, 2003, wrote eleven poetry collections published between 1943 and 1992. To these are added the “Uncollected and New Poems”, gathered at the end of the Collected Poems in the 2000 Allen & Unwin edition (republished in 2019 by Faber), a four-volume autobiography (Farewell Happy Fields, 1973, The Land Unknown, 1975, The Lion's Mouth, 1977, and India Seen Afar, 1990), and a considerable number of essays on the English Romantic poets, on the visionary engraver and poet William Blake, and on Irish Nobel Prize for Literature winner William Butler Yeats. She also co-founded a journal of the arts and imagination – Temenos – and an academy supported by Prince Charles (now King Charles III), the Temenos Academy. This book offers an overview of Kathleen Raine's work with a particular focus on her poetry. It is divided into three parts: key biographical and bibliographical information; four major themes: Eden, love, exile, nature; and finally, three perspectives: Kathleen Raine's relationship with the poets of Eden, her connection to religion, mysticism and spirituality, and finally her position as a defender of the Imagination.

    No full text
International audienceThe article explores the translation of phraseological units (PUs) from Chapter XI of Gargantua by François Rabelais into five languages: Polish, Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian (BCMS), Chinese, Japanese, and Brazilian Portuguese. The main difficulty in the phraseological translation of the selected text lies in the fact that the therein present PUs have to be taken both in the literal and the figurative phraseological sense. This problem resulted in translators sometimes sacrificing one of the two possible reading layers. Following a theoretical examination of the PUs characteristics and their unfrozenness, the analysis of the translations into five selected languages takes from Hejwowski’s (2015) classification of the translation techniques adapted to the purpose of the work. Based on that, we could identify and evaluate the different ways the translators adapted the Rabelaisian wordplay to the cultural universe of their own language. We also identified an additional technique involving the translator’s phraseological innovation, where the Rabelaisian wordplay in the PUs is reproduced in a very free and creative way in another cultural universe

International audienceThe use of “political cant” in Education: A Lexico-Discursive and Pragma-Semantic approach. This study analyzes the notion of “double-talk” particularly in discourses related to the French national education system, by combining a lexico-discursive approach with a pragma-semantic one. In the educational sphere, “political cant” is often criticized by three groups: teachers and unions, parents, and journalists. All highlight a gap between official discourse and on-the-ground realities, marked by the use of euphemistic or managerial terms. These discursive strategies aim to ease or conceal tensions but instead foster mistrust toward the institution. The study shows that the judgment of political cant functions as a tool of polarization: it builds a boundary between political decision-makers and practitioners, reinforcing the perception of a vertical fracture within the school system.
